Seven Layer Cake Recipe?

The hamantashen thread got me thinking about the baked goods my grandfather used to make. He made the most amazing seven layer cake. It looked just like the one in the picture (see link). Does anyone have a recipe? It was a yellow cake, chocolate cream filling (very dense, not too sweet), and the chocolate icing used to remind me of the chocolate dip for soft-serve ice cream, but way better.

To me, what you describe looks like Dobos Torte. I made it a long time ago. I didn't use a spring form pan as in the linked recipe. I spread the batter on the bottom of greased and floured cake pans. As explained, the layers are separated by chocolate buttercream and the top of the torte is spread with caramel. It's very good.

Do you want one for passover or with flour?

If you want one for passover, I make a flourless Sponge cake (there's a good one in Joy of Baking) in sheet pans and keep the layers fairly thin. Bake for less time as well. Then cut, trim, frost with buttercream and apricot jam.

I think the recipe you are looking for is the chech. recipe called the honey cake. It is real popular in those countries over there. If you go to dogpile search engine you can get the recipe.

Even though this may not be the Peanut Butter Cake you are looking for.....at least it is a Peanut Butter Cake! Peanutbutter Cake with Chocolate Peanut Butter Frosting 1/3 cup butter, softened 2Â¼ cups cake flour, sifted before measuring 1Â½ cups granulated sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup creamy peanut butter 1 cup milk 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Chocolate Peanutbutter Frosting, below Cream butter until light and fluffy. Sift in flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add peanut butter and 2/3 cup of the milk. Mix until flour is well moistened. Beat for 2 minutes on low speed of electric hand-held mixer. Beat in remaining 1/3 cup of milk, the eggs, and vanilla. Beat for 2 minutes. Grease and flour two 9-inch layer cake pans; pour batter into the pans. Bake at 375Â° for about 25 minutes, or until a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool, carefully remove from pans, frost, and assemble layers. Chocolate Peanut Butter Frosting: 1/2 cup peanut butter 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa 2 3/4 cups sifted powdered sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup half-and-half or evaporated milk Cream together the peanut butter and cocoa. Add the sifted powdered sugar, salt, and vanilla, and about 1/2 cup of cream. Beat until smooth, adding a little more cream for a good spreading consistency, if necessary. There are may versions of the Better Than Sex Cake.This recipe was given to me by an aunt. I made it once many years ago to take to work. It was a hit. 1 (18.5 oz) yellow cake mix 1 (1 lb 4 oz) can crushed pineapple 1 C sugar 1 ( oz) pkg vanilla pudding mix (not instant) 1 C whipping cream, whipped & sweetened flake coconut, lightly toasted Prepare cake mix according to directions on pkg. Pour into 13 x 9 pan and bake as directed. Cool. Combine pineapple & sugar & bring to a boil. Cool slightly. Poke holes into cooled cake with a fork. Pour pineapple mixture over the cake. Prepare pudding mix according to directions. Cool. Spread over pineapple & chill. Just before serving, cover with whipped cream & sprinkle with coconut.

I think this may be it - I've had it in my "want to try" file for along time. * Exported from MasterCook * Praline Carrot Cake with Candied Pecans Recipe By : Serving Size : 0 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 1 lb. Carrots -- peeled and sliced 6 eggs 3 c. flour 8 oz. Crushed pineapple -- drained 2 c. sugar 1 T. vanilla 2 tsp. Baking powder 1 c. pecans -- chopped 1 tsp. Baking soda c. coconut 1 tsp. Salt 1 1/3 c. oil 2 tsp. Cinnamon Cook carrots until tender. Drain. Chop in food processor or coarsely mash with potato masher (should have 1 Â½ cups) Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Make a well in center. Add oil, eggs, pineapple and vanilla. Beat on low speed until combined. Fold in carrots, pecans, and coconut. Spread into 3 9" round pans. Bake at 350 for 35-40 min. That recipe looks good, but it doesn't sound quite right. I know my grandfather didn't put lemon zest in the batter and for sure no caramel. And the outer shell was more of a chocolate ganache. I found another one for the Dobos Torte (see link) that might get me closer.

Although my GF was a baker in a Jewish bakery, it wasn't a flourless cake, I'm sure. When I search online, the references for the cake are all for NY Jewish bakeries. Maybe I'll have to order one and try it.

BTW, when I said the batter was spread on the bottom of cake pans, I should have explained that the pans were inverted. The effect was to make pancakes, as the cake layers were only about 1/2" thick.

Hi Spacific - I think tracey made this cake a little while ago...is this close? I guess you can make as many layers as you want...

I have a recipe that looks like that. It's from my Oma and it's called Kalter Hund (Cold Dog in German... strange name). My mom still makes it every year at Christmas. It's not made with buttercream though. The frosting layers are a mixture of coconut oil, sugar and cocoa. The cake layers are actually social tea biscuits dipped in a weak coffee or rum mixture, to soften. It's put together and placed in the fridge to set. It's really delicious. I can post the recipe if you like. I'll have to dig it up.

I posted a link below to the Dr. Oetker site, where there is a picture. That recipe isn't the same as mine, but it turns out looking exactly the same.

The Dobosh Torte that I know is a round cake with buttercream icing between thin layers of spongecake. The cake is actually baked, not like the no-bake cake I mention above.

That 14 layer cake looked really good. I think that batter recipe is pretty close. I'm going to try it. But I'll just experiment with the chocolate filling. I'll start with a basic buttercream recipe.

Susytwo, that picture looks very close to my grandfather's cake. He also put it in the fridge to set and to be able to slice it so thin. But I know he had a batter, because he used to bake the cake in big sheet pans, then cut them into rectangles to assemble. And I remember the frosting between layers was much more creamy. Do you have the recipe for just the outer chocolate shell? Thanks.
