We enjoyed the game and were really happy to see the Saints win! No special football food for the 2 of us, but I basted some roast cornish hens with a mixture of Asian chili sauce and Saucy Susan and some Soy Vey Teriyaki sauce (real homemade, LOL) - and they came out with some nicely browned and crispy, tasty skin! (There's nothing like good chicken skin :)

Just eating dinner in front of the television is a party for us!

We had fun food during the SB... Pizza, wings and candied bacon. I have been drooling over the idea of making this bacon, recipe from Fine Cooking that uses maple syrup and brown sugar. So SB was my excuse. The game was great, I'm not into football but this time I really enjoyed it. I usually just watch for the commercials :)

Here is our pizza... I used the Artisan Bread in 5 min for the crust and it turned out very good.

We went to our friend's house who have been doing super bowl parties for years. They are vegetarians - so food followed suit. She made gumbo, jambalaya, chicory coffee. I brought vegetarian muffalettas (Boscoli, provolone w/non-animal rennet - hard to find!) and fried eggplant cutlets for the salami/mortadella. Oh yeah and the Fleur de Lis cookies. Lots of other foods too, everyone brought something!

I had a house full from 2-10.....Today I am dragging too much food & drink....UGHH!! Must get energy to clean my floors and Bathrooms. Happy that the Saints won I was rooting for them!

I was also rooting for the Saints, although I usually don't care who wins. But, because I just love RiverRat and I know she was excited, I was pulling for her Saints.

Elery wasn't here and Ashley was on the couch with an ice pack for her wisdom teeth, so Super Bowl food consisted of yogurt for Ashley and graham crackers and a cup of tea for me. I did have Nutella on the graham crackers, though, a celebration in itself!

We had a blast! My cousin calls it the "Super Food Bowl -- and, oh yeah, there's a football game, too." Everything was delicious! Thanks to melonpocky's excellent queso explanation, I made the best white queso dip ever -- using Queso Chihuahua and a queso from Aldi that was simply called Quesadilla. I did make the Hot Milk Cake and that will now be my go-to yellow cake recipe. Amazingly moist and delicious. Also made the Crisp Salted Oatmeal White Chocolate Cookies from Smitten Kitchen -- wow, huge hit! I'll post the recipe below. I really wanted to make Eileen's empanadas, but couldn't find the discos anywhere close and didn't want to mess around with making dough -- so, we'll have those for one of our next parties.

All in all, a good time. Oh, and I thought the commercials this year were mostly...blah. A few good ones, but overall disappointing and rather high on the creepy scale.

Crispy Salted Oatmeal White Chocolate Cookies
Adapted from CookÂs Illustrated

The original recipe didnÂt have white chocolate in it, but it really works wonderfully in here. Even if youÂre a dark chocolate fan. Watch out, use the good stuff and this may even convert you.

1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon table salt
14 tablespoons (1 3/4 sticks) unsalted butter, slightly softened
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats

6 ounces good-quality white chocolate bar, chopped (not "white chocolate" chips; theyÂre almost always artificial. I am adamant about this.)

1/2 teapoon flaky sea salt (like Maldon or fleur de sel) (for sprinkling on top)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment paper or Silpat. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and table salt in a medium bowl.

2. Beat butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Scrape down bowl with rubber spatula, then add egg and vanilla and beat until incorporated. Scrape down bowl again. Add flour mixture gradually and mix until just incorporated and smooth. Gradually add oats and white chocolate and mix until well incorporated.

3. Divide dough into 24 equal portions, each about 2 tablespoons. Roll between palms into balls, then place on lined baking sheets about 2 1/2 inches apart. Using fingertips, gently press down each ball to about 3/4-inch thickness.

4. Sprinkle a flake or two of sea salt on each cookie

5. Bake until cookies are deep golden brown, about 13 to 16 minutes, rotating baking sheet halfway through. Transfer baking sheet to wire rack to cool.

Thanks for the reminder, I've got to try these. The salt ought to be GREAT for my blood pressure, LOL.

It's funny, but right after I posted this, the very next post I clicked was the recipe thread -- and there was Nancy's gorgeous picture! Too funny. Smitten Kitchen's addition of the white chocolate really is nice, though -- and I'm not a big white chocolate fan.

Yes, if Nancy's pictures get any better and she keeps posting things like that, there goes my diet, LOL.

We went to a party and I watched the first half of the game in a large room with a lot of chatty people so it was hard to hear some of the commercials. What I do remember was three different commercials whose point was that men need to be more manly!

One was the guy shopping with the girlfriend/wife who had "surgically removed his backbone" IIRC. He was carrying all her packages and had a bra flopped over his shoulder. Right. The gist of it was that next time she dragged him along on such an excursion he could carry a miniature TV with him and watch the game.

Another one showed men listing off all the things they put up with from the girlfriend/wife. I don't remember everything that was said but the one that sticks in my mind was "I'll listen to your opinion about my friends and I'll listen to your friends' opinions of my friends." And the reason he put up with this and all the other mistreatment? So he could drive a dodge sporty sports car or some such.

I can't remember the third "you're not a man anymore so seek refuge in our product" commercial but it was along that same theme.

Ugh!

We had our neighbors over to watch the game. I made mufulettas and Tequilaberry Salad. Everyone brought something to share. There were 10 of us, it was a really nice time.

I thought the commercials this year were pretty lame. And I wasn't crazy about the half-time show, either. Oh well. I was glad to see the Saints win, partly because they kicked our butt in the playoffs, but mostly because I know how excited some of the forum members were about them going to the Superbowl!
