Computer virus protection advice

It's time(well actually, it's past time) for my annual virus protection purchase for my pc. I currently have McAfee and it's renewal is $79 for the year. Other programs are much cheaper-$29-$59. What do you currently use?

We've used ESET for several years and been happy with it. It's also a program that isn't a huge space hog like Norton with a zillion extra features that you don't need and just slows your computer down.

I use McAfee. It comes with my Cox Communications cable service.

I think someone mentioned that what you posted, the registry change wasn't necessarily bad but could be from a program being removed. I wonder if there is a way to find out if you were actually infected with something? This is why I suggested the Panda scan because it would have told you. btw, make sure you do windows updates. I personally would get rid of Mcafee. I know you paid for it but it's a resource hog. For backups I have multiple hard drives, they are cheap. I have an external enclosure that holds 2 drives. I have a computer running windows XP, installed the Maxtor Maxblast program and use that to back up to the larger drives. As far as I know, they don't have a program (Maxtor) like this for Vista but I could be wrong. What it will do is back it up as files verses a file that you have to unpack. If you back up your C drive, you will see every folder on the C drive in your backup.

Well, I didn't click on any link or popup I simply copied and pasted the URL into the address box. I ran Adaware just in case, and everything is just fine. I googled the website domain and found a lot of discussion circulating across the internet, but nothing definitive. Most of the comments were from people using Firefox. No one could specifically identify any trouble actually created from the link, just a lot of buzz and speculation about it. However, I do think it's good advice not to click on any popup.

patti, if you are able to get onto the internet, go to this website and download avg free antivirus. free.grisoft.com (copy and paste it into the address bar.) download it, run updates and run a scan. then go to this site below and download "windows defender". once you've downloaded it, run updates and run a scan. this should help cleaning up the popups (spyware) that you have. if you can't get to these sites to download these, you may then have to take it in somewhere to get it cleaned up. i wish you lived close, i'd get it all cleaned up for you. good luck, tammy Here is a link that might be useful: windows defender

I use Avira - free version. I quit using McAfee after I got a major malware infection while using it. I worked with some technical geeks on an online forum to fix the malware and they recommended Avira. Haven't had a problem since I started using it.

Here's the CNet review on ESET that Anna recommended. Using the downloads direct from CNet is a small extra layer of security because sometimes you can get to the wrong (trojan)website by mistake and download something malicious. ESET seems to have pretty good reviews, and a 30 day free trial, too.

I use a combination of Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

I swear it was McAfee that gave me a really bad virus and we had to replace my computer. Long story, but I ended up buying Norton.

The current Norton is a lot better than the older version. Remember when Norton and McAfee were about all there was, and people fled from Norton and went to McAfee? Now the opposite is true.

So far so good!

I use Norton, but I don't buy it from Norton. I google it and buy it from third-party sellers. I paid $19 for it in May.

Microsoft Essentials is free and has good ratings too. Was recommended by someone and we have hand no problems with it.

I use Avast, the free version. It was recommended by the geek squad at Best Buy and it does everything I need, but I've been thinking of upgrading to the paid version.
