"Nutella would make a great frosting"

My sentiments exactly!

I do really like Nutella,
But I think it would be a LOT better,
if it were a dark chocolate.
It really does taste like frosting.

I've been thinking of tryiing to make my own,
a 'homemade' semi-sweet Nutella,

But that's a subject for another thread.

Licked from the spoon works just fine for me - that way I avoid the extra carbs from the toast (LOL). I use Nutella in my gluten-free sorghum cookies. -Grainlady

I have never tried it before also. My husband says it is too addicting to keep in the house. I need to use it for a dessert when company is coming so I can try it without overdosing. It certainly looks good. What's not to like:)

I love it with graham crackers (Trader Joe's if possible) for dessert. To die for.

I will eat it on a cracker or graham wafer with peanut butter, then a small hit of Nutella on top. I will have it plain on a spoon too - mixed with peanut butter.

Definitely on graham crackers, and I used it as a filling for peanut butter cookies a couple of times too. I also did the nutella braid with some sweet dough and the kids loved it.

I'm not crazy for Nutella on bread either, or on toast, but I like it on pancakes, go figure.

The Princess and Bruvver agree with seagrass, Nutella on bananas, so I top pancakes with Nutella and bananas, kind of like bizzo's crepes.

Personally, I like it right out of the jar with a spoon the best, and yes, I know it is not health food. One of the very few pop up advertisements I've ever clicked on on this site was the $1 off coupon for Nutella!

I think using it on plain grahams is a good idea. I am planning to get some good vanilla ice cream and put a little heated Nutella on it for an instant sundae. I wish I could feel this enthusiastic about fruits and vegetables!

I grew up eating Nutella on bread. Now a days I make peanut butter and Nutella sandwiches to take along on my bike rides.

I've posted the pic before, but for a quick pms fix, nothing works like putting nutella between wonton wrappers and deep frying them. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

The French teacher at school brought it in for my daughter to try. Now, every Friday, she eats Nutella on baguette slices before school. Very Parisian, she says... Questionable nutrition says mom!!

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I don't like Nutella at all. Too sweet, too milky! Hardly any chocolate flavor. I do, however, like the dark chocolate spread available at World Market.

I agree with "shambo"!! I think it tastes like a cheaply made, artificial product. Hubbie thinks the same and we would never buy it again. Maybe because it's so terribly (artificially) sweet; not a quality product.

I was starting to think that maybe there is something wrong with me and my taste-buds.!

I have never tried Nutella. I've picked a jar up in the store, but when I see the number of calories and the price, I put it back. Maybe one day.

You're right, it's sweet and unhealthy. Leave it all for me and I'll gladly leave you all my crispy roasted chicken skin, the olives and pizza!

This thread got me thinking it'd be worth another shot. So I put it on my shopping list then suddenly rememembed my MIL send an open jar home with us a couple months ago. Tried it off a spoon and honestly kind of didn't mind it this time (as opposed to that last time when I simply threw the jar out) but I don't forsee myself running to it for a "fix" anytime soon.

I'm wondering if they've changed the formula. I seem to recall that last time reading the label and it had a good amount of "partially hydrogenated" stuff in there. But now the most objectionable thing I see is palm oil.

There is an Italian chocolate that is combined with hazelnuts. It is known as "Gianduja". I first heard of it from Joann Weir's cooking class show where she made a Semifreddo with it.

Think that perhaps "Gianduja" could be a version of Nutella, only better quality.

Has anyone ever had any if this Italian chocolate, or heard of it?

No, don't care for it. I want my chocolate very dark. I bought Christy a jar quite a while ago and she had some but it's still in the pantry, and she prefers milk chocolate. Probably time to toss. I haven't gone out of my way to see if I might like it as cookie filler and such though. In warm milk might be good... with a good dose of Hershey's dark syrup added. Hmm, that might be an idea. Mix it with Hershey's Dark to make it more chocolaty and darker at same time.

It's no secret I love chocolate. But, Nutella doesn't taste like chocolate. At least, not good chocolate. To me, this product tastes cheap and highly processed, which it probably is. Still, if I were on a deserted island...

However, when I brought home a jar of Nutella (about 2 years ago) Thumper went crazy over it. Once the boy picked up its scent, the entire jar had disappeared. Practicing quality control, I suppose.

We all know moderation is key to healthy nutrition, and while this product may not be the worst thing to unleash onto your kids, try to tell them to use moderation.

Which would explain why I rarely buy the stuff.

Whew! I thought I was the only one here who did not like Nutella. Some years back it was discussed on this forum and I had never even seen any in the stores. It appeared on the shelves shortly afterward and since so many liked it I bought a jar. I finally had to throw it out because even the sweet lover Hubs didn't like it.

If you look closely at a jar, it's not labeled as a chocolate spread, but as a hazelnut spread.
As someone who came late to Nutella, I love it. We bring it back from France every time because the formulation is different than the Stateside version.
I do understand that some find it to be an acquired taste - and we have a French friend who finds peanut butter to be "tres bizarre, ca!".
I can't wait for speculoos spread to be available more widely in the US - of course a US manufacturer will probably make it with HFCS - grrr!

Philly, you brought up a good point. Nutella is really not much of a chocolate spread but rather a milky hazelnut spread. I think that's another reason why I don't like it. I'm one of the few people that doesn't enjoy hazelnut flavored sweets. I like real hazelnuts, just not the flavored stuff - like cookies, coffee, etc. So for me the combination of too much sweetness, too milky, too much hazelnut flavor, and not enough chocolate to be discernible, all add up to me not caring for the product at all. Also, the texture reminds me of overly smooth grocery store peanut butter made creamy with shortening.

I would like it a lot more if it weren't so intensly sweet. I did use it to frost a small one egg cake, but it was still very sweet. I doubt I will buy it again.

I don't like it. Too sweet and not very healthy ingredients. But last week while visiting friends I bought Justin's Chocolate Hazelnut Butter at Walmart in Henderson, NV. It's pretty good, not as sweet, better ingredients.

Grew up in Italy, Nutella was a taste from my childhood. I love it still. It actually has more of a hazelnut nutty flavor than chocolate, much like Ferrero Rocher candy.

I like it on toasted bread, french bread and rolled up in tortillas sprinkled with chopped peanuts.

I will have to pass on the Nutella. Didn't like it as a kid, don't like it now. It just doesn't taste right to me. It tastes fake if that makes any sense and it is sickeningly sweet to me. Giada can have mine! NancyLouise
