Farmer's Market - Maine Shrimp, Quark and more.....

Yesterday I went to the monthly winter farmerÂs market. IÂm in heaven! I bought 10 lbs. of fresh gulf of Maine shrimp, organic quark with dill and garlic, organic eggs and mixed salad greens. It took me 2 hours to steam and shell the shrimp. The yield was just under 3 lbs. of delicate sweet shrimp. Yum! I froze some for later and weÂve been munching on the remainder. The quark was a new purchase for me and it was a hit! The tanginess of the cheese was perfectly set off by the garlic and dill. It was creamy and spread easily on crackers. DH and I enjoyed our afternoon with our goodies and a glass of wine. The greens made a fresh light salad when paired with the shrimp and was a nice break from our winter diet of home canned, frozen and root vegetables, bread and meats/chicken. The organic eggs were filled with golden yokes, nice and buttery. We have a regular source for eggs but our neighborÂs chickens are in their winter mode and production has not kept up so I broke down and bought them at the market. They were a lot more expensive but we love organic eggs soÂ..

TOTALLY JEALOUS!!!!!!!!

I do buy organic eggs at the co op grocery...and keep the dozen just for my morning breakfasts of easy over..LOL for baking and everyone elses weekend eggs they get cage free grocery store ones. LOL shhhhhhh don't tell them!

I can't wait for local shrimp season to come in for hubbies shrimpy desires..(I don't like shrimp. But he does.) and I've yet to try quark....I can only get it "commericalized" but I love my raw milk from a local gernsey farm.

I'm envious too, I can't wait for our local farmer's markets to open.

I love shrimp, but there's none fresh here, of course, I depend on the frozen stuff.

On the upside, my young hens have given me NINE eggs a day for the past three days, good little girls. The eggs are about "medium" size because the hens are only about 7 months old, so they'll be getting bigger and more reliable all the time.

I save all my homegrown eggs for eating in sandwiches, omelettes or just fried eggs, if I'm baking I'll use the store eggs. I'm just waiting until I have so many eggs I don't even hesitate to bake with them, that'll be a couple of months.

This bill has NOTHING to do with socialism and EVERYTHING to do with capitalism. The profits of big agriculture are written all over this bill. I've spent weeks 'dissecting' every word in the bill and researching the co sponsors and the wretched politicians that wrote it , you should do the same. It does in fact impact farmers markets or any vegetable that is sold or meant for human consumption. It makes all growers comply with industry regulations ie insect control/pest nematodes,bacterial disease control and on and on. It hardly impacts the current agriculture monopolies and impacts the small farmers that don't have the resources to comply with regulations. Tom Vilsak (one of the bills authors) is heavily in favor of large industrial farms and genetically modified crops. Political spin confuses people, it is not about socialism per say , if we want to be intellectually honest HR 875 was born out of corporate monopolies infiltrating Washington with their money and influence. This bill is capitalism out of control,paradoxically the profit motive of corporate monopolies is behind this bill. They see the threat of small farmers and back yard growers and they want to stop it. This is all about $ business $....thats capitalism for you.

Marla, I am glad that here that someone is thinking the same way as me. At my markets it isn't about more vendors. To be honest there are alot less. We had 7 vendors last night at my big market, one beef, one cookies, on burritos, one bread, 2 big vegetables, (mainly they buy and resell produce) another vegetable grower and myself. We have had bad weather every Wednesday too and also the main entrance to the parking lot we are selling from has been tore up. You had to use a side entrance. All these factors are contributing too. I am not priced too high. Maybe a few 25 or 50 cents higher, but that also has to take into account sales tax. Last year was my best year ever. I am hoping that this year it will come back around. I hope, as I have made some bigger investments in production and I hope I don't regret it. If they don't pay off, then I guess we will be eating lots of winter squash and sweet potatoes. Jay

Sharon, I have got to get to Tenerife some day. It just looks like heaven. What a pretty market. I was at the Reading Terminal Market in Philaelphia last week and wished I had a camera with me. It's a very special place, but has more of a gritty city quality than your spot. How nice to be able to just walk up the street to a charming cafe. Thanks for sharing these glimpses of your life.

I live about 3 hours east of there and make a pilgrimage at least twice a year. Great deals on bulk spices. One thing to look for if you like spicy food: chipotle powder. You can find canned chipotles anywhere, but this is the only place I've found it as a powder. It's roughly equivalent to the hot pimenton (smoked Spanish paprika) but it's very smoky and very hot. Addictive, and very easy to use--I have a filled a dedicated salt shaker with it and keep it by my stove and add it to eggs, meats, whatever. Great choice in oils. Lots of Spanish olive oils, classified as spicy or fruity or aromatic. Bulk organic coconut oil. Ditto on the advice to bring a big cooler. Lots of meats, including stuff that's hard to find elsewhere: rabbit, fresh duck (whole, and duck legs & breasts sold separately as well)--they have a good selection of halal meats as well. (Halal goat seems to be a good seller.) Good sausages made there, including landjaeger. Incredible seafood selection. They'll clean it for you right there. In addition to fish, they have all sorts of unusual items like octopus, squid, etc. Breads and baked goods: made on the premises. Every item I've tried has been at least very good, and some have been outstanding. Produce: lots of fresh veggies and fruits, including some really oddball stuff like durian fruit (don't ask--it's pretty nasty IMHO) One thing to remember: you may wish to bring a sweater or jacket. They keep the whole inside area pretty cool. It's a foodie paradise, and it's a good thing I live so far away; if I lived any closer I'd probably weigh 400 pounds. And as mentioned, it's cash or debit card only. No credit cards. Have fun!

Gulf of Maine shrimp is one of my favorite foods. I find the meat as succulent as lobster and don't mind the time it takes to shell them. Glad you were able to find some!

I've never heard of quark (will research..) and I've never had a farm fresh egg. More food experiences to explore -

Moosemac your fresh shrimp sound wonderful!

Amck ...quark is a fresh cheese very popular in Germany and is used a lot in German cooking, especially in sweet recipes or as part of a filling for a pastry or struedel.
Here we can buy it made by the Danone company, and this is what it looks like:

It's a light and healthy alternative to sour cream or whipped cream.

Thanks, Sharon! It looks similar to the yogurt cheese I make by straining the whey from solids in plain yogurt. I will see if they have some at our local specialty foods store to give it a try.
