Farmer's Market - Maine Shrimp, Quark and more.....

Yesterday I went to the monthly winter farmerÂs market. IÂm in heaven! I bought 10 lbs. of fresh gulf of Maine shrimp, organic quark with dill and garlic, organic eggs and mixed salad greens. It took me 2 hours to steam and shell the shrimp. The yield was just under 3 lbs. of delicate sweet shrimp. Yum! I froze some for later and weÂve been munching on the remainder. The quark was a new purchase for me and it was a hit! The tanginess of the cheese was perfectly set off by the garlic and dill. It was creamy and spread easily on crackers. DH and I enjoyed our afternoon with our goodies and a glass of wine. The greens made a fresh light salad when paired with the shrimp and was a nice break from our winter diet of home canned, frozen and root vegetables, bread and meats/chicken. The organic eggs were filled with golden yokes, nice and buttery. We have a regular source for eggs but our neighborÂs chickens are in their winter mode and production has not kept up so I broke down and bought them at the market. They were a lot more expensive but we love organic eggs soÂ..

TOTALLY JEALOUS!!!!!!!!

I do buy organic eggs at the co op grocery...and keep the dozen just for my morning breakfasts of easy over..LOL for baking and everyone elses weekend eggs they get cage free grocery store ones. LOL shhhhhhh don't tell them!

I can't wait for local shrimp season to come in for hubbies shrimpy desires..(I don't like shrimp. But he does.) and I've yet to try quark....I can only get it "commericalized" but I love my raw milk from a local gernsey farm.

I'm envious too, I can't wait for our local farmer's markets to open.

I love shrimp, but there's none fresh here, of course, I depend on the frozen stuff.

On the upside, my young hens have given me NINE eggs a day for the past three days, good little girls. The eggs are about "medium" size because the hens are only about 7 months old, so they'll be getting bigger and more reliable all the time.

I save all my homegrown eggs for eating in sandwiches, omelettes or just fried eggs, if I'm baking I'll use the store eggs. I'm just waiting until I have so many eggs I don't even hesitate to bake with them, that'll be a couple of months.

I try to buy local crops when i can and feel it's more important now than it was last year even, because of tainted food showing up.(its olives now) I'm hoping Clarksville, AR will sell more things this year too,they've been sold out by noon before. vickie

I have been reading the market forum and will continue to do so. Gobs of info there! Good to have my guesses confirmed as far as tomatoes being the main draw. There will be others with tomatoes there but I bet I'll have the widest variety with a rainbow of colors. Those and my sourdoughs will likely be my "signature" items. At the vendors meeting the other night, they said that sweet corn, tomatoes, and green beans are the biggest sellers so I'll put up with the pain of picking beans. Besides, I have free slave labor at my disposal. ;-) All of the other stuff will be to flesh out the table during the slow part of the season and likely won't be huge sellers so I won't plant huge amounts of them. I do expect my honey to be a big seller but I won't have that for a while yet. Okra and southern peas are not popular here at all. I'm thinking, though, that I'll plant a few okra just as a curiosity on the table and maybe I'll get a few converts. It seems like a "foodie" sort of thing. One thing about this market is that it's in a touristy historic downtown area with hundreds of tourists each summer day. So I'll have to think of some things to gear towards that. Dawn, good to know about the hab gold jelly. I'll pick up some starts next time I'm in town. Thanks, everyone! Gulf of Maine shrimp is one of my favorite foods. I find the meat as succulent as lobster and don't mind the time it takes to shell them. Glad you were able to find some!

I've never heard of quark (will research..) and I've never had a farm fresh egg. More food experiences to explore -

Moosemac your fresh shrimp sound wonderful!

Amck ...quark is a fresh cheese very popular in Germany and is used a lot in German cooking, especially in sweet recipes or as part of a filling for a pastry or struedel.
Here we can buy it made by the Danone company, and this is what it looks like:

It's a light and healthy alternative to sour cream or whipped cream.

Thanks, Sharon! It looks similar to the yogurt cheese I make by straining the whey from solids in plain yogurt. I will see if they have some at our local specialty foods store to give it a try.
