Strange visit to the doctor

I went to the office of an orthopedic surgeon for a problem with my wrist and had the strangest exam experience of my life. This is a prominent orthopedic group in a major metropolitan center.

I filled out the forms in the waiting room and was later escorted into the exam room. It was about 20ft x 15 ft with two exam tables placed at opposite sides of the room. Sitting on one exam table was a preteen boy with his arm in a cast, and surrounding him were his parents and two teenage siblings.

I was escorted to the other exam table and instructed to sit on it. A technician came in and took a brief history about my injury, organized my chart and left. Following up on what he had overheard, the father of the boy asked me details of the accident and I explained what happened. There was a sign posted on the wall that read something like: We understand that your privacy may be compromised; please let the front office staff know if you are inconvenienced by this. (I wish I had thought to take a picture of it with my cell phone.)

As the seven of us waited (I had a friend with me), staff walked into the room at various times because the area below the boyÂs exam table was being used for storage. And this exam room opened into some sort of other room so there was a stream of staff members passing through.

The person who was with me said he would have walked out. I decided to let it play out to see how long this was going to continue because I was in disbelief that the doctor would conduct a consultation under these circumstances. I was wrong.

The doctor came in, spoke briefly with the boy and his parents (as we looked on and heard every word), answered some questions, explained what the tech staff was about to do with his cast, and then left. As they waited for the cast changeout, the doctor reappeared and dealt with me and discussed my options as the family of five listened in. He put my x-ray up on the screen and we all got to look at it.

I realize that I could have short-stopped this, and my intent here is not to complain. But really, what were they thinking when they set up this room and put up the sign?
