Using a Breville compact oven

OK guys, the kitchen demo is about 2 weeks away so I went to BB&B and picked up a small Breville toaster oven. I've never used one, but I've been stressed about not being able to bake. How stupid! Yep, we could eat out all the time, but, no. I'm a bake-a-holic (as well as being a box-a-holic--need the boxes for packing).

For those of you with this lovely little machine, what do you do with it? I've searched, of course, but most of the posts have been rather old. It will be used before the demo just to get a feel for it.

We bought one for our remodel after a week of struggling with our old one and other electric devices, so it will be a lifesaver for you. We decided on the big one, and I'm glad we spent the extra money for it. All my baking pans fit in it except for a lasagna pan. I like that I have no size restrictions. We don't use a microwave so it gets a good workout.

I used my Breville several times today:

Baking today: Today I baked Lemon Bars and corn muffins.

Breakfast today: I roasted sausage patties. Then toasted English Muffins. To make over easy eggs for DH (yuck) I wrapped the small frying handle in foil and broiled two eggs.

Lunch today for grandkids: I let them make their own pizza's and baked them.

I also recently bought the Breville Smart Oven (the largest one) and I am happy I did. My last toaster oven was a Black & Decker, which was ok, but after using the Breville, I can really see the difference. In terms of your question, I have not baked anything taller than a pie. Mostly I have been using it for making pizzas for the kids. I also baked some cookies and they came out perfect, but I haven't baked anything large as of yet. I'll try and give an update in the future. If anyone is thinking about this toaster oven, I would highly recommend it. It is really user friendly, and so far everything has been working perfectly. I have provided a link that I found did a good job of reviewing the product. It basically summed up all the reviews that I read on Amazon. We have the Breville Compact version of the Smart Oven. It is a bit smaller than the normal Smart Oven but still bigger than a regular toaster oven. It is not convection (why it can be smaller). It works as stated and is easy to use. No problems with it. A few things I've noticed that kind of bug me. -Shelf doesn't come out when open door (Larger model does have this) -Oven does not turn off when you open the door - so if you are checking on something it will keep on cooking - (our older model shut off when opened) -We have to pull it out from the place it sits to use it because it gets so hot. It does have clearance bumpers but still gets pretty warm. (The standard Smart Oven did this too - melted a faceplate outside the clearance area) -The Compact version combines functions on the knobs to save some space - not a big issue, just have to get use to switching modes on each knob. A bit more intuitive on the standard one. When we purchased ours the only place I could find the compact was at the Breville store online. Still pricey. Like it fine, not in love with it yet.

We have the Breville full-sized convection oven, and have happily used it as our only oven for 19 months. (Yes, the kitchen reno is taking longer than expected.) We don't use a MW. Anything we need to reheat or melt, we can do in the oven or on the Waring two-burner range/hotplate. We can get a full 13x9 casserole (without handles) in the oven, and we bake, roast, broil and/or re-heat in it almost every day. Personally, I just don't like MW-steamed food; I prefer the dry heat of an oven. The only time we had a MW was when my elderly father stayed with us for an extended time, and he bought one because his daily routine involved re-heating my press pot coffee. I hated losing the counter space, and we sent the MW home with Dad. I've never had a toaster/convection oven other than the Breville that both bakes AND toasts well. My partner (who was skeptical of the price) now wants to buy a couple of them to store in the basement in case this one breaks and they stop making them. (He's like that with pants, too!)

I know you said you already decided but I am curious how major your remodel is and if you will have to set up a temporary kitchen? I ask b/c that is what we had to do and for that I got the Breville countertop oven and fell in love with it. For the real kitchen I have an Advantium Speedoven/Microwave but we designed a spot for the Breville to live in the pantry. So far the need to microwave and heat something in the small oven at the same time, hasn't occured but if and when it does, I can use the Advantium as the main microwave and the Breville as a back up oven.

I have the Smart Oven by Breville - the same as mustangs - she is the Person I credit for influencing me to buy it ! :~)

Basically, if it fits in the Breville - it gets cooked in the Breville.
I did buy their Pizza pans and make delicious homemade pizza
often.
I bake pasta dishes - using Le Creuset pans, I bake 1/2 hams -- I buy them by whether they will fit inside the oven-- I make all my baked squashes - acorn, spaghetti, sweet potatoes, etc, -- We love crispy smashed potatoes--- what else???? sometimes I bake fish or salmon --- the normal toaster oven foods, including bagels, toast, breakfast muffins--- like I said - if it fits, I use the Breville. I have an expensive (to me) Dacor oven - hate it!
If the Breville broke - I would replace it immediately!
It is my go to oven!

I've tried 8" and 9" pans--they fit. A small gratin pan fits as well. Small casseroles do too. I'm excited! Hubs even likes it, and it's just the two of us. I just don't want to quite cooking, even if it is only 3 weeks. That's what they predict. This oven means I won't have to cook ahead and freeze. I can use the breadmaker and bake the rolls in the little oven. Ah, keep the feeling of being at home, not in a disaster zone.
