$4,000 to make this 8' x 7' design?

we are using these black and white marble tiles (12") for our foyer and hallway. when i inquired with the supplier to have the design shown in this little vestibule area made for our ante room, which is only 8ft x 7 ft, they quoted us $4,000 because they said they need to cut the sizes from slabs. can this design be done cutting the 12" squares? i'd love to do this design for our anteroom, but refuse to at that price. any thoughts on whether that can be done by cutting the size we'll already have or would that look weird since this image shows larger pieces without grout in between?

I'm not an expert on this, but what about asking the supplier about what similar designs could be done for a more affordable rate?

Standards for dimensional lumber have changed over the years, always, of course, becoming smaller. When your house was built the larger dimensions you have were standard. Today another quarter inch has been shaved off all soft wood dimensional lumber.

benjesbride I absolutely LOVE this idea! Is moving a waste line more of an issue than moving the plumbing lines? I've always hated that the toilet is right at the door and would like to add a partition wall between the would be new vanity and toilet location. There is a vent in the rear of the existing shower (from bottom to top of building) that is about 12" wide. It's goes all the way to the end of the foyer closet. That leaves us with about 72" of space along the foyer closet wall to add a toilet and vanity. I think the toilet requires 30" so a 42" double vanity (or two smaller single vanities). We cannot have washer/dryers in this complex (old 1950's plumbing). But I've always complained about no linen closet in the bathroom so that works too. I'd like to move the door to the foyer; however, that would require a split vanity due to the heating pipes in the middle of the room along the wall behind the existing door. No, we are not adding a bedroom. That may be a later addition though, years from now. An neighbor converted the rear of the living/dining area to an office/bedroom (photo below). I've tried to adjust the floor plan to add the vent/shaft in the rear of the shower. It may not be worth the time and expense to open up the foyer wall if we can't get a great layout.

Pipdog -Our island is 7 long x 6 wide, in a 25 long x 19 wide space (Kitchen, eating nook). It has seating for 5 (usually 4), prep sink, triple trash, cutting board cabinet, two drawer banks, and a big storage cabinet underneath (the sink vents in this cabinet). Extremely functional! We sit 2 at the front, 2 at the side; much better than 4 seats in a row. (The front of the island has a curve in it, too). Can you use DH's island hybrid idea, but make the seating area on two sides, or do you need the island storage on the other side?

The advice on the Pantry has been good. It may help you to get fresh sets of eyes on the rest of your plan though. You may have caught hints by commenters, like the bumpout, it's size, the windows, a prep sink, that an entire plan review may help the Pantry along with the rest of the house. From this snippet of the plan I see a very complicated structure with many girder trusses. There is a fake dormer, presumably lined up over this Pantry bumpout. There are parallel gable roofs in the Master and Covered Deck. There are scissor trusses over a flat ceiling of the Mudroom. There is a tub in the bath that doesn't seem to have a Guest Room nearby. There is a convergence of vaulted to flat ceilings and where those hit on walls that is odd. A possible hood exhaust pipe in a vault is slightly off-center, and the discharge route is questionable. Just some things I noticed that might be fine or may not be optimal.

Draw it out on graph paper using 1 square to represent 1 foot. Then ask them to requote using full and cut 12" tiles. However, the design you chose is a square design and the area you are putting it in is not square, so you will need to decide how you want to handle that problem.

4k for that does not make sense at all. Goto your local floor and decor show room and you can get 12X12 granites for ~$10 per sqft, thats the max am saying. Install should not cost you more than 4 bucks per sqft. So, 4k for this is not worth.

I installed an elaborate bathroom floor and the materials were $1200, and three days for the fitting, cutting and installation. It was only 60 square feet.
A bid will include materials, labor and profit. If the bidder is unfamiliar with the process to create your design he is going to pad the labor to preserve the profit. He may feel that a lower price would be a risk for him, and he knows that you can't lose money if you don't take an unprofitable job. He may have enough other work right now so that he bids to risk-proof himself.
(And that out-of-position baluster on the bottom tread really is bothering me. In the example pic, that is)

You can certainly replicate the overall scale and proportion of the design out of cut 12" squares.

To get close to the look though, consider using a dark grout where dark tile meets dark tile, and a light grout where light tile meets light tile.

That way the long thin strips made up of several cut tiles will be somewhat color-uniform. Color-wise they will resemble a single piece instead of you having dark strips being made up of dark tiles segmented by white grout and/or the white strips being segmented by white grout.

I did not notice the out of position baluster, but you are correct...they do look wrongly positioned.
