Horizonial Wood Grain on Cabinets
Comments (6)There are a number of brands that will do horizontal on both doors and drawers. I know Showplace offers it since I sell em. As you noted in the lower price points these will be man made veneers. It also will NOT be grain matched from cabinet to cabinet. Once you are at the Dura price and up there are companies that will do real veneer, horizontal or vertical. At higher price points you can bet real veneer with horizontal grain matching. BUT a word of caution on matching horizontal grain. While a damaged drawer in a vertically matched cabinet only requires 2-4 drawerheads, a damaged door or drawer in a horizontally matched veneer will either: - look very out of place when replaced if not matched -require replacing everything. -Or a really talented repair person. Comments (4)There are several much tougher finishes than lacquer. However, lacquer is much easier to apply and dries much faster(20 minutes or so) so is a favorite with manufacturers. Faster apply/dry time is more money. Lacquer is a disolving finish. That means any application of an additional coat of lacquer partially disolves the top layer of the existing finish. So, I'd use a finish sander(1/4 or 1/2 sheet sander---NOT a random orbit sander-ROS) and 150 grit paper to sand out as many of the scratches as possible. However, if there is only one coat of lacquer, you will be into the finish quickly, even with a finish sander. Use a rag dampened with lacquer thinner now and then before and during sanding. That will disolve the top layer and make sanding faster, even with the 20 minute waits. Many of the scratches are through the lacquer and into the 'finish' they mention. Those 'finishes' are a recipe of stain/finish/additives that are propriatary to Pottery Barn. Without the actual recipe, matchig the color is virtually inpossible. So, most of what you will accomplish is just going to be modifting the present look....See MoreCross Post: Problemd with Engineered Hardwood
Comments (6)"Its as if the hardwood veneer has parted from the underlying fabrication." It may not have separated...as in delaminating...but it does sound as though the sub-flooring may have settled in that area. Sub-flooring is usually plywood and unless you see signs of foundation settlement in that area of the house from the outside, then there are a myriad of possible causes. If this is a first floor room and you have a stand-up basement that will allow you to look up at this sub-floor area...that would be my first suggestion. Things to be considered would include water damage...from pipes or some other water entry area...or termites [unlikely unless you live in a popular termite area]. If your "Walnut Creek" name is referencing Walnut Creek, CA then termites are a possibility. Some uninvited influence has caused the sub-flooring to warp. My guess...knowing very little about your structure...would be some form of water damage. If you can locate the floor joists...you can re-anchor the creaking floor by driving a screw...or several screws...depending on the overall area of the creaking...into the joist from the floor surface. But...unless the cause of the separation/warp is identified and corrected/rectified...it will happen again. The other possibility is to have the flooring removed in the creaking area and replaced but considering the age of the flooring...unless you're lucky and can match the color exactly...I wouldn't recommend this approach. Personally...not knowing any more about your structure than what you've posted...I'd consider having a structural engineer inspect the area. Hope this helps....See MoreEngineered Hardwoods: High Quality Vendors?; Differentiating Specs?
Comments (2)Forget harder. Seems that fantasy was created by marketing people and the internet. It's so over played and many are drawn into believing it. However, Mesquite is one tough hardwood. Maple is awful as it can show everything due to the lack of grain compared to others. Semi gloss. Yikes. Shows everything. A formal look. One disadvantage of 3/4" engineered on concrete can be adjoining tiled areas unless one plans ahead and builds it up to create the same finished vertical height. For those that get fussy about the everyday beating hardwood floors get (depending on the household) wire brushed/textured or scraped floors work ideally. True about the wider plank popularity, but I find the conservative crowd (aged 50 +) lean to a 4 or five inch width. Ken Fisher Uptown Floors...See Morelindac
