I'm hearing lots of these stories lately concerning cupping of wood floors over newly-installed flooring underlayments and patching compounds. Most engineered cementitious underlayments and patching compounds incorporate self-drying technology and there shouldn't be any moisture migration issues with those. I would consider any cementitious product that does not incorporate self-drying technology to be the same as ordinary concrete when it comes to dry and cure times. Perhaps the product used did not have self-drying characteristics? But, I am not a concrete expert, so take my thoughts here with a grain of salt.

Your floors may settle down after moisture reaches equilibrium.

I saw a floor in a recently renovated nightclub in Astoria, Queens that was cupped throughout...and I bet the cause was going over a 'green' concrete slab or partially cured patching compound.

Here are two questions for you: How was the solid adhered to the substrate and with what? What is the room temperature and humidity readings for the inhabited space? Sometimes if the humidity is very low in the room environment, it can cause wood to go out of equilibrium and cause the cupping you are seeing. In other words...the top part of the wood contracts in dry conditions causing the plank to bend upwards at the edges.

I was not home when they laid the leveling compound, so I do not know how they prepped the floor. I have no idea about the humidity. Southern CA is generally very dry. This is the wet season and we have had the occasional rain shower. There were showers when they laid the floor. I might also add that the condo was uninhabited when they put the floors in, the heat was not on and the glass doors were open all day that week. The problem became apparent after we moved in and started running the heat. We only have it on at night, since it is generally mild here. I don't know how any of this effects the humidity.

Good luck with your floor there. Hope it settles down or you get some answers. Wood is hygroscopic and will take up and expel water molecules. Difficult to say for certain what the reason is for your problem with the floor, but it is moisture-related.

One of the installers was here today. He examined the floor, looked very disturbed and said that he was going to have his boss come out and take a look. We had the floors installed by the same small flooring company from whom we purchased the wood. Stay tunned.

I know this thread is over 2 years old, but whatever happened to your floor? Did it settle back down to normal?
