DH is learning to cook!

Under protest cause I'm sick. First day I have managed to stay out of bed for more than a few hours. So far he has made a great chicken noodle soup, chichen breast steamed veggies. Tonight may be his favorite, meat loaf. He's taking good care of me.

If I was sick my DH would take good care of me too but he'd order in!

I've never had goat's milk, either, but I do love goat cheese. I tell my family it will be death by cheese for me here in Holland before I get back to the States LOL! The first time I went grocery shopping here I wanted skim milk for cereal. I got the cereal ok, but I hadn't learned any Dutch yet and the milk cartons were confusing. I'm fond of how-to information, which appeals to my need-to-know personality as an information geek; and luckily that type of information is so readily available these days. I started in my mother's kitchen as a child, reading a few cookbooks and booklets that were more than just recipes; good basic training as a kid in 4-H, and bless a really great Home Economics teacher in high school where I caught the cooking/baking bug in earnest. The public library has been a good friend for ever and always - I can check out the shelves at the library and come up with videos, DVDs and great instructional books on nearly any subject concerning cooking and baking. And all those years of watching the pros on TV. I've purchased DVDs from King Arthur Flour on several subjects. I have Shirley O. Corriher's "Kitchen Secrets Revealed!" (I also recommend her books, CookWise and BakeWise). I've watched "Good Eats" videos and DVDs by Alton Brown since they were first available on TV and also checked them out from the library. I also have a bunch of books by Harold McGee, starting with "On Food and Cooking - The Science and Lore of the Kitchen". The Cooking Channel web site has "tons" of videos (http://www.cookingchanneltv.com/). So if you want to know something, it's out there.... I'm also a life-long believer in continuing education. There are so many classes available. I've taken classes in Greek Foods, Irish Foods, sausage making, home-canning, dehydrating, nutrition, how to write a recipe, even using a microwave oven back in the 1970's, bread classes of all kinds.... And then the old saying - knowledge isn't knowledge until you share it with others - which has led to a near lifetime of teaching food and nutrition classes in our community. Everything from 4-H, Girl Scouts, to elderly men at the senior center who were now in charge of cooking for the first time in their lives.... I couldn't begin to guess how many people have taken "Bread-in-a-Bag" classes - both youngsters and oldsters. General basic nutrition and cooking classes at the Food Bank. Cooking with commodities classes, using commodity foods distributed to low-income individuals and families. These classes have been well received and are great fun. I love food science and consider it a "good read", so you'll find a lot of technical manuals and college-level text books in my personal library. I want to know why something works or doesn't. As a Foods Judge at County Fairs I need to know judging standards, but also why one muffin, pie, cake, cookie, biscuit, loaf of quick or yeast bread, etc., isn't as good as another. What went wrong or right and to be able to share that information with entries in the competition. Those are technical skills not found in a recipe, but take years of self-study. Anyway, it's not just one thing and you'll have to find your own comfort and interest level. I've also had some very good mentors through the years. I'm always endearing myself to someone who knows - so I can learn from them. -Grainlady

I don't know why people suggest using newspaper or parchment paper to cover the stove when cooking - the stove itself won't get hot enough to burn paper, but the pots as they are cooking can get hot enough to burn. And there is no need, it's so easy to clean up any messes. As mentioned above if anything boils over you can quickly wipe it clean and dry with a paper towel and a little care (burner can be hot enough to burn you but not hot enough to burn food on or ignite paper). Then put the pan back on to finish. Otherwise just wipe clean when finished cooking. The only time I would put something under a pot/pan was if it was something that could scratch the glass such as some cast iron. I had a regular ceramic top electric stove prior to the induction and I definitely had to work to keep that stove looking pristine as the heated element under the glass would burn on any food that dripped etc. while cooking - this is not a problem with induction. I've never had the problem you did - I do choose the burner that best matches my pot, but my burners accept a wide range of sizes. I do have to center the pots/pans over the burner - not perfectly center, but reasonably. I can test this by starting the pot on the burner and then slide it to the side and when it's nearly off, the burner turns off and a light flashes to warn me that the pan is not in the right position for cooking. When I slide the pan back on it goes back immediately to cooking. You might want to test the settings - something on one stove that was a high setting may be a medium high on another - that's enough of a difference to over or under cook something. I found that mine had a greater range of temperature choices for cooking than my gas and electric stoves - the low is really low and good for things like melting chocolate and the high is really high - I never used a thermometer but through experiments I've figured out what to do at what settings. You can boil water in a pot to test how quickly your stove responds to changes in the settings - you can see how quickly boiling water will settle down to a simmer. Don't shake your pans to stir your food as it cooks - use a spatula or other cooking implement to move the food around in the pan. Or lift the pan to shake the food then put down on burner to continue cooking. You don't want to scratch the glass with daily rubbing of pans. And yes - get most of your prep work done first because those pots and pans will preheat more quickly and that water for pasta will boil more quickly.

If I was sick, I'd die. From starvation. Unless I wanted to eat pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I started writing recipes down about 10 years ago so that DB would be able to cook for me if I got sick. He's gotten pretty good at soups, and he can grill, but I don't trust him with very many other things, as he has no grasp of how to season things unless I have spelled it out in a recipe. I once tried to teach him how to make vinaigrette and told him to taste it throughout the process in order to determine what needed to be added. He failed miserably at that, and so I wrote down a recipe for him the way I like it. BTW, he can't fry pancakes either!

I'm glad things are working out for you and that your DH is making an effort.

I had to laugh when I tried to imagine Clive in the kitchen, however!

Tami, I sure hope you feel better soon. I've met your DH, so I'm not at all surprised that he's taking good care of you, but you need to get better and reclaim your kitchen before he decides he really LIKES to cook!

I think of you and DH every time I'm playing with Molly Bunny, BTW.

I am finally starting to get better. I want a bacon egg cheese sandwich for breakfast but not gonna get it! I found out i'm allergic to penecillion which is what really put me down in bed for about 4 days. The brochitis is bad enough, but I have lived thru that many times.

He made me chicken noodle soup, baked breaded chicken breast with packaged steamed veggies that he found at the grocery (extreeeeemely sweet), and meatloaf. He loves meat loaf. I sat in the kitchen and talked him thru it. I don't even know what it looked like. It tasted close to mine, so he was happy, I only ate about 6 bites and a few noodles. Last night I made him make more soup! He keeps asking what I'm making for dinner tonight when he comes home from work!

Grainlady, I don't need to check his old grade cards. I know his sisters! He only followed instructions if he had to.

Chase, he tried to order in. Thought he'd get away with wonton soup for me. Yuck.

Shaun, pizza would normally work, but the cheese would have really gummed up the respritory works!

Annie I need to send you the picture my DD just posted on facebook of her rabbit! Sadly she is down to one right now. But we still have our two.

Tami, I'd love to see the bunny! I'm glad you are feeling a little better but I'm sorry to hear you're allergic to penicillin, now you have to watch every prescription they give you. Elery is allergic to codeine and someone is always trying to give him something with codeine in it!
