can i replace my Gas fireplace with wood?

Hi, i have a Napoleon gas fireplace that vents to the rear vinyl siding. What do i need to do to run a wood stove? Or possibly electric? There is no chimney just the vent behind.

I think your options are limited. If you had a wood fireplace, either prefab or custom built, in which gas log had been installed, I would say, you could probably switch back, provided you had your chimney checked to make sure it is in good condition. But that's not your situation.

There are gas stoves on the market (natural or propane) that vent horizontally, and electric stoves that do not vent at all. Whatever you do, do not get vent-free gas system. They are a health and safey hazard.

A wood stove requires a chimney certified for solid fuels. One would have to be installed - possible but expensive. Do not attempt to install a wood stove with the current venting system. Doing so would create an extreme fire hazard and no doubt void your insurance.

No vent at all is required for an electric heater, but running one would be very expensive unless you have an ultra low kwh electric rate. Gas in almost every area of the country would be cheaper than electricity.

mindlord70, there should be a gas valve located outside the fireplace somewhere. Look for a socket along the walls adjacent to the fireplace near the floor. It should require a special key to turn it on. Also, you may need a starter pipe if there is not one there. In any case, please do your homework before attempting to light a fireplace. Swithcing from oil to gas, especially when the gas line is already in the house, is an very easy decision. You will easily cut your heating bills in half. I recommend you have the plumber install a separate gas hot water. The hot water heater can be sized to your needs. Usually 40-50 gallons is adequate for most families. This is also a more efficient to heat hot water resulting in additional savings.

What makes you think that burning wood is going to be any more heat efficient than wood absent a sealed fire box. It's impossible to tell from the pictures if the firebox and the flue is capable of supporting burning wood. Have a local technician come by and inspect it.

I don't recognize the brand (edit: now I see; it didn't show on my mobile browser. Yes, JennAir is a fine mid-range brand) that you have. But superficially, it seems a fine range. It could easily last another 20 years. Basic gas appliances aren't very complicated and can usually be fixed if something breaks. It's only when you add things like electronic controls or self-cleaning that things tend to break much quicker ... or of course, if you buy a super cheap stove with fragile parts that are impossible to order as replacements. So, another vote for keeping your existing stove and future-proofing the electrical wiring in case you might want an induction range at some point. If the walls are fully accessible, running a new circuit should be very cheap
