Season 2 Call the Midwife

aaaah , only 2 episodes left, then the Xmas special.

I particularly was touched by sunday's episode, with the tuberculosis testing. This is the kind of series I wish was endlessÃ¢ÂÂ¦Ã¢ÂÂ¦.

I am looking forward to Chummy's return for those last 2 episodes.

anyone else under the spell of that show ?

I thought I was DVRing it but somehow I recorded the one about Selfridges instead. And I didn't realize it until Sunday. D'oh! I'll have to watch the episodes online. I really enjoyed the first season.

I agree wholeheartedly - Sunday's episode was the best of the entire series. DH walked in during the final minutes and asked why I was wiping my eyes.

la jan, we saw the first episode this past week and loved it. He has a way of bringing all these things you kind of knew about in isolation *together* so they all make sense...like, I didn't know that Woody Guthrie was from Oklahoma and specifically was caught in the same big storm that had just been described, and expected the world to end. We've sung "so long, it's been good to know you" since I was a kid at camp...has a completely different meaning now!

I very much enjoyed the series "Call the Midwife." I have watched up to season 3. It was so refreshing to watch a show that doesn't overlook the hardships that women have faced, and to some degree still face. I live in Canada, and have seen a lot of US/Cdn TV which usually features wealthy and perfect conditions, beautiful movie stars, with little to no reality, and without touching on female perspectives. I saw a mention earlier about the lack of slums in Canada. I can only speak to the history of western Canada, which was mostly rural. In the 1950s, Western Canada enjoyed a high standard of living where there was ample food, although, my father did say that if you spent all your money on frivolous things you could starve. Before that, especially during the Great Depression, my grandfather had a sister who died because the family couldn't afford the medicine for her, and his mother saved for years after to pay the hospital for her daughter's death there. They lived in fear that the bank would take their house, but almost every house was in foreclosure in their area, Vancouver BC. My grandfather had a dairy cow he quite liked, and a garden, so it seems that western Canada was quite rural, even in the cities at that time, possibly with the exception of Chinatown, where the Chinese Canadians there had things quite rough. Today in Canada there seems to be a greater divide between rich and poor especially in the larger cities. Some of the issues in the book and movie still go on today, for example, abuse of women, children, losing a child, (although not as common today) being judged by others, mental illness after pregnancy and the great love we as mothers have for our children. I found it interesting that Jennifer Worth said most families lived near their parents, brothers and sisters, usually moving two streets away from where they grew up at most. Here in Canada we don't seem to have that closeness with family. Also there is a lot of privacy here and I think many mothers can feel isolated or suffer in silence. I don't live near my family because the housing prices and lack of jobs paying over minimum wage makes it very difficult to live there. Worh had another comment on the older people being rehomed to better living conditions, but that many of them died because they missed their friends and family and they didn't have that support. I found it interesting, and I think nowadays here in Canada, people's values are more about money than relationships which is sad too. In that way, the community of East London seemed to be better.

janalyn, we had some discussion about Call the Midwife a while ago. As you say it is certainly accurate (not that I was giving birth in the early '50's . . . .) and in her book Worth is quite honest is saying what she found most difficult was the smell of the unwashed bodies especially those unfortunate women suffering from VD, something we luckily cannot experience from the small screen. The TV series does a good job in recreating the period feel of those days though often the 'real-life' outdoor shots are much too clean . . . white paint on doors and window frames, and children wearing raggy clothes but with shiny, neat hair. In reality the East End was often a very tough violent place with squalid living conditions and little time for 'do-gooders' though the nuns/nurses were always respected. Mary you have probably noticed that the children in Larkrise . .. are also surprisingly clean and free from scabs, boils, lice and general suppurations.

Did anyone catch what the football playing husband, Allan Romaine, said to his team before driving off with his wife in labor? It was instructions, something about practicing their “something something.” Never mind. I found it. It was “keepie uppies” meaning joggling the ball around up off the ground, using just your feet

I watched that episode but it is the only one I have seen. Boy am I late to the party! Made me cry too and I'm totally unfamiliar with the series.

Question: Is the Dr in love with the Nun who was diagnosed with spots on her lungs? I've set to record it next week but I'm dying for a little background.

I watched the first ones, and then missed some and couldn't get back into it. Where do you watch them online?

I also missed the first episode of a new series last week of The Bletchley Circle. I caught the end and it looked good.

gold dust, there is definitely something between the 2, the nun is torn about her vows and her feelings.
The Dr has a little boy and is a widow.
I wonder how this will unfold.

Oh yes, I am loving it. I will be sorry to see the season end.

I have missed Bletchly Circle because it is on at the same time as Mad Men. I will have to find it somewhere as everyone seems to be enjoying it.I am notso crazy about Selfridge and think that Jeremy Piven was miscast.

I am hooked! Got Season 1 on Netflix, and have been recording and watching Season 2. I always cry. It makes me feel fortunate as a woman to live in this day and time.

Love the current season of Call the Midwife but miss Chummy. The latest episode was so touching.

Ded, I have a DVR so I can tape both Mad Men and The Bletchley Circle. I haven't yet watched Sunday's episode of Bletchley, but did see Mad Men. I'd almost given up on Mad Men as I wasn't crazy about so far this season but Sunday night's episode was GREAT! I'm so glad I didn't give up on it. I watched about 15 minutes of Selfridge but didn't like it at all. I love Jeremy Piven but didn't take to him in that role.

I reserved at the library the book that Call the Midwife is based on and can't wait to get it.

Season 1 is also available at my library. I love this show so much. This past week's show made me cry too. I have said it before --read the book (non fiction) with the same name. Love.

I had to jump back onto this thread because after watching last night's show (episode 7). The previews show for next week's show showed Chummie going to the hospital by ambulance. Oh no! I hope she doesn't die in childbirth... Meanwhile, Sister Bernadette seems to have beat the TB.

Call the Midwife is one of the best shows ever in my opinion. And just think, this took place in the l950s.

I've caught two shows and I have to agree, it's excellent. And I'm like Gold, I had no idea what was going on. lol.

Hopefully they'll show the beginnings in reruns, and then I'll record.

Here's a gripe I've had for a long time. Why won't the USA put stuff on like the Brits do?

I had a nice surprise waiting for me at the library yesterday. I'd gotten notice that a book I reserved for my son had come in so we went afterschool to pick it up. There was another book there for me that I hadn't been notified about yet, and I was excited to see that is was The Midwife by Jennifer Worth - the memoir the show is based on. I'd reserved it awhile ago and it finally came in. I'm starting it tonight! I'm loving the series and hope the book is equally good.
