Rock Candy

I am trying to help a friend who is helping her daughter with a science project: make Rock Candy.

Easy, right? Not so much apparently. After a ton of research and many variables as to what we should do, I thought I'd ask all of you. She's already tried it 2 times with no luck, and come to think of it, mine never worked for my science projects either!

Any tried and true recipes and instructions for making rock candy?

Make a super saturated sugar solution. Heat warm water and add sugar until no more will dissolve in it. Remove from heat, pour into a clean tin can roll a string in dry sugar and suspend the string down the middle. Tie the string over a skewer or chop stick. As it cools the sugar will form crystals on the string.

Good buys, Jan. I am really anxious to see pics of Talladega from your garden - hopefully you will get blooms next summer. Lucky you that you have so much room to keep adding daylilies. I added about 50 this fall and transplanted about 45 seedlings into flower beds. I am quickly running out of room and NO I am not making any more beds. Note to self: No more flower beds, no more flower beds... Thanks to everyone for their daylily photos and comments last summer. They helped me make my choices this past fall.I have only added 4 for spring, but think I have room for about a half dozen more. From the Stamiles I am buying Sir Francis Drake. Get Jiggy I have not been too bad on the LA, having bought only 2 (so far) Jennifer Trimmer Sherry Candy Ann

Capsaicin Distillation From Nuclear Peppers

You can use it as a weapon if you're ever burglarized :0) For that matter, here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry for "pepper spray": Pepper spray, also known as OC spray (from "Oleoresin Capsicum"), OC gas, and capsicum spray, is a lachrymatory agent (a chemical compound that irritates the eyes to cause tears, pain, and even temporary blindness) used in policing, riot control, crowd control, and personal self-defense, including defense against dogs and bears.[1][2] Its inflammatory effects cause the eyes to close, taking away vision. This temporary blindness allows officers to more easily restrain subjects and permits persons using pepper spray for self-defense an opportunity to escape. Although considered a less-than-lethal agent, it has been deadly in rare cases, and concerns have been raised about a number of deaths where being pepper sprayed may have been a contributing factor.[3] The active ingredient in pepper spray is capsaicin, which is a chemical derived from the fruit of plants in the Capsicum genus, including chilis. Extraction of oleoresin capsicum from peppers requires capsicum to be finely ground, from which capsaicin is then extracted using an organic solvent such as ethanol. The solvent is then evaporated, and the remaining waxlike resin is the oleoresin capsicum. An emulsifier such as propylene glycol is used to suspend the OC in water, and pressurized to make it aerosol in pepper spray. The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method is used to measure the amount of capsaicin and major capsaicinoids within pepper sprays. It's basically your procedure up to aeresolization. Sounds like dangerous stuff there. Here is a link that might be useful: Pepper spray

Thanks Alexa and Annie! There's plenty of it left :). I'm nibbling on a few pieces right now lol. The one neighbor/friend tried it and liked it, regardless of the lack of flavor. I hope to get more sugar here soon so we can make another batch. The next time, it'll be orange flavored! Brad AKA Moonwolf

Mine never worked either!

I just called my MIL who is a retired JHS/HS science teacher, and if it makes you feel better she said she never had success herself so she never made it a project for her classes. What she would do instead was salt crystals. She said regular salt works well, but epsom salt is even easier.

I'll be watching with interest to see if anyone has had better success than you, my MIL or me!

Start with distilled water.

Impurities in the water serves as "seeds" to grow crystals. You will get smaller crystal with impure water.

Put the solution in the refrigerator also helps. Give it a lot of time. It takes many days for the water to dry out.

Hmmm...I think we've already looked at all those links! LOL!

Some say "prime the string/stick with sugar" some don't. Some say boil to 265; some say to 247, and others don't even bother with boiling temps. Some sites say "cover the jars" others say "place them in the refrigerator"!!!!!

It sounds so dang simple, but very tricky to actually pull off.

It really should be a "fail-safe" experiment. It is almost impossible for it not to work. It is just that it takes many days for the water to dry out and the crystals to grow.

It would help if you start out with "seeded" strings or sticks. First soak the strings or sticks in the sugar water and let them dry out completely. The strings or sticks will be "seeded"

You can also melt some store bought flavored candies into the sugar water to give it color and flavor. Don't put too many candies in the sugar water. Candies may have inverted sugar, which doesn't crystallize as well.

Good luck.

Never really worked for us either, and I tried a bunch of different methods. Best I ever got was slight crystals on the string. Certainly not what we envisioned in our "Bill Nye, Science Guy" attempts.

We may not be much help, but we're consistent. It never worked for me either!

As I said, it is impossible for it not to work. It would be against the law of science.

The problem you guys had mostly was because you were not patient enough.

It took me a month to make this.
