Walnut Teak Hardwood Floors for Kitchen

We have spent the whole day going from hardwood floor place to hardwood floor place.

Most of the pricing we saw was higher than we were hoping for. We gravitated towards Walnut in every place we saw, but had trouble finding the plank width we were looking for (around 4 inches) at a reasonable price. We saw a nice 4" Walnut plank but it was over $13 per sqft.

The last place we went to we found a Walnut in Teak finish which we like. It is lighter than we had originally planned, but seemed very rich and warm and might tie in well with the maple in other areas of the house. It was $6.95 a sqft.

Has anyone used a Walnut with Teak finish? Do you have pics of it in a room?

We saw a large sample, but I do like to see how it looks in a room. My only concern is that it has a bit of a yellow tint.

Any comments? Pics? TIA!

Also I saw some Brazillian Walnut on ebay for around 3.99. Would we be crazy to consider ebay hardwood?

Just a few questions...
are you looking for Brazilian Teak? or American Walnut (species) in some sort of teak finish? (I guess it's probably not American walnut you're after)
I was looking at various Brasilian h/w flooring a while back and may have some decent pics... they go by so many different names...cumaru, ipÃ© etc...
but I found they tend to be more red than yellow and probably will get redder
with time. I on the other hand WAS looking for a yellow/ashy bras-walnut and could not find one.

Thanks for the response! I was looking for Walnut floors, but seemed to find something I didn't like about everything I saw - some of the finishes seemed strange, I'm not sure about 'character' grade and of course the ones I loved were outside the budget (of course!!). These are Walnut floors with a Teak stain which I know is a little odd, but I like them so does it matter?

I went back and took a couple of pics today so people can comment:

We went with unstained cherry cabs and unstained maple floors, and let each darken naturally. Nice contrast, and you cannot see a speck of dust on the floors, LOL. Even my Jack Russell's white hairs on the floor disappear until you look at the floor at a sharp angle or vacuum and see how much you picked up. Also, scratches and dings don't show up as well on lighter floors. But the nicest thing is the contrast in the wood colors. I would be careful that both the floor and the cabs don't end up in the same hue or tone, it can look like those wood paneled rooms from the 50's. Get some oak samples, as large as you can find or buy, and have them stained and finished. Put them down on the floor and see what they look like in the various light conditions. And also see how they look against your base cabinets. It's worth the hassle and time, otherwise you might be stuck with a very expensive mistake.

Hi Gretchen. I can’t see the layout 😢 To me, when I look at that door I see way too much detail in the profile, all of it outlined in black, in addition to the distressed wood. It is a very heavy look for a small space. This is about what you like. If you like the glaze, go for it, but I think you should look at images of spaces in which that door has been installed, and make sure it gives you the look you are hoping for. So what is the look you are hoping for? I think you need inspiration images. Google images of small kitchens that use wood cabinetry and see what you think is pretty. You will learn a lot about your own taste, and you will get a lot of good information from them. I only found one with wood cabinets that I thought pretty, but I’m sure you will find more. By the way, the way to keep your space from looking like a wood suit is to choose a darker (or much lighter) wood for the cabinets than the oak of the floors. Since you used the word “modern” I’m going to just let you know that a simpler door profile in walnut would be gorgeous. It could not be more different from the door you are considering though.

I'm not sure what LVT is. :) I have an appointment with the flooring person for Saturday to test out samples. Cherie, we hate forced hot air because it bothers my and the kids' asthma and allergies so I am actually very happy about these baseboard radiators as radiant heat is much easier on the lungs since it's not blowing hot air all over the place. There is central air for the summer months. We live in Northern NH... it gets cold here for sure. I am going to keep the tile in the kitchen for now and the rest will be new flooring *all going in the same direction* ! We are ripping out the red carpeting, which is in all four bedrooms as well as on the stairs. We want to replace that with flooring and we don't want yet another type of flooring in the house so it makes sense to do the living and dining room as well. When we reconfigure the kitchen, we'll have to match it up and remove the tile at that time.

Are you looking at Brazilian Walnut or American Walnut?
I am considering Brazilian Walnut floors (IPE). We found a place locally that was selling them for $5.61 (special sale), 4in plank, micro bevel edges.

I personally love the look of what you picked out and think it will look nice all laid out.

I think this is American Walnut, but I'm not sure - it isn't stated on the label. I wish I had found a place with $5.61 per sqft! This was the cheapest one we saw, but we happen to like it as much or more than most of the other ones.

I'm in Westchester County, New York. If you are located in Hoboken,NJ you're pretty close, just over the bridge.

We got our floors in a place called Geyser's in Mamaroneck but we also saw some beautiful hardwood floors in Expo in New Rochelle for around $6 sq ft (uninstalled). We looked at Brazillian Walnut, American Walnut, South American Walnut and African Walnut.

We went with Brazillian b/c it seemed to be the most durable of all the ones we looked at. Good Luck.
