New hardwood does not match old hardwood after sanding and refinishing

We are in the middle of a kitchen renovation, and we wanted to replace the tile in our kitchen with hardwood to match the rest of the first floor (white oak). The old floors were sanded and stained, along with the new wood, and we are noticing there is a color variation in the new wood vs old wood. The old wood appears a bit lighter. Everything was stained, “special walnut”. I was under the impression it would all flow together if using the same stain, and sanding everything down. We are worried the floor guys put down red oak instead of white oak. That is the only explanation we can think of. Is this normal?
Did I mention I’m almost 9 months pregnant and crazy for trying to get this done before baby?
