Iâm freaking outâ¦missing dog

IÃ¢ÂÂm sitting on the back patio porch just hoping my dog will materialize. She is a sweet little Maltese I have had for around thirteen and a half years. Everyone in the neighborhood has been out lookingÃ¢ÂÂ¦there is no sign of her anywhere. She is yippee vocal dog and I heard no sounds that would alarm me while out in the yard till dark. She must have squeezed through the fence sometime between 8:00 and 9:00. Still, I was on the back patio at that time and didnÃ¢ÂÂt hear her yipping at anything which is a signal for me to go see what she is up too. My neighbor was out late as well and did not hear or see anything. I donÃ¢ÂÂt know how IÃ¢ÂÂm going to sleep. We live sort of out in the country with Bob Cats and other animals. I hope sheÃ¢ÂÂs not lying wounded and suffering somewhere. Her sight and hearing isnÃ¢ÂÂt great so we all looked in the ditches in case she got hit. There is just no sign of her!

I'm so sorry-- I imagine you are having a hard time thinking of anything else!

I hope no one else comes on and waves a finger of blame, like a poster above. I have no idea why someone would chastise a person in pain. :( I am sorry about that, too.

Wow! You certainly sound ambitious!! As has been mentioned, you will need to do the little stuff so the big things can take place. Physical labor takes much time! Your growing seasons can be quite demanding, and things MUST be done in time, on time, so the later results can happen. Like garden preparation, seeding or putting out plants. If you wait, the window is closing, results are not as good. There are times you just cannot do what needs doing on time. ESPECIALLY if you are alone, no family members to help. My suggestion would be to check out the Master Gardener Program, see if there is a local branch that puts on classes. Taking their program really opened my eyes to doing things systematically, how so many things affect each other, regarding your final results. Locally, the MG works thru the State Extension Service, should be listed under State then Master Gardeners if you check. Your Land Grant University manages the Ag programs and farming related things. Hawaii is small, not sure who would be the University. You can learn as you wait to get your land. I would second getting PRODUCTIVE land, rather than just cheap land. Even in small acreages, you can have flat and rolling, mixed areas. Heck we have wooded areas on our 14 acres! All the animals you name, will be grazing, they are BETTER animals with some exertion going up and down hilly ground. How MUCH EXPERIENCE do you have with these animals and their care? Even with sheds, not barn with stalls, you will need to check them for injury, do regular upkeep work like hoof trimming, grooming, so you can make sure they don't have problems. For me, that means DAILY handling. You don't see cuts or soreness, if you don't lead the animal in to groom him and find problems. You need to really LOOK at them, not just a passing glance every day or so. The sheer varieties you name is overwhelming. I would have a difficult time keeping up with just animals, and no other work you have named! You will need secure fencing to contain those animals. Some like the deer, may have special laws on upkeep, you don't know about. Here, they have needed TB testing yearly, with clean results so you can sell the extras. Birds named may have issues with staying home and predators. Some just are not bright, hurt themselves, like Peacocks who fly into things. Swans can be NASTY, need to often be kept apart from smaller fowl so they don't kill them. Swan defending his area, can break your leg with a wing hit! Hawks are not picking on you, but do go for easy food sources like chickens. Shooting them will get you in BIG trouble. Buying and then losing birds is a huge money drain. The wooley animals named will need shearing yearly, and a market to get rid of the wool. You could shear yourself, but it is hard with many animals. Cost money to hire shearing done for you. Are you going to buy special sheep that take the heat well? Not sure how well the Llama and Alpaca will do in such heat, even sheared. Market for selling babies, show animals is down, not as much demand now. Each species has it's own demands for housing, feeding, vet care. That is a LOT of information just for one species! We got cattle last winter, the learning curve is SHARP, costs add up fast. Horses can be complicated, as can sheep. Feed is NOT interchangable! Goats are EXTREMELY creative, hard to keep penned if you have poor fences. The trees sound quite interesting in their variety, will they survive in MS weather? Have to say Bamboo can be EXTREMELY invasive, take over your whole farm. Check the varieties you plan to purchase, make provisions for keeping it contained. I have seen some places where the bamboo has escaped, it just crowds everything else out FAST. Some kinds get tall as trees, kind of creepy walking thru such a woods. Just looks "wrong". A tree plantation needs good fencing as well, our deer eat everything in cold seasons! Some of the trees named are slow growing, are they just for interest? You may not live long enough to see a return on wood sales. You should develop a business plan type idea for your farm. Start with the long term things first, like tree planting. Yes they need fencing, maybe watering in dry times. Need to keep the ground mowed so trees are not crowded out. When they get bigger you could graze animals under them. Land needs a good well, maybe two, so you have water. Pond is nice, but not essential to start. You can always have one dug out. Pond could be a mosquito problem too, stagnant water if it is only filled from rainfall. My thinking here, is that with you in service or Reserves, you may not have TIME to do more than watch the trees grow when you are home. Animals take LOTS of time. Reserves might get called up, then who cares for the livestock? Even dogs and cats have had problems finding homes if Military owners have to leave NEXT WEEK. Re-enlisting is not good for livestock. You could take huge losses if you needed to dump your animls. No mention of family who would stay home to care for the place on a daily basis, so probably better not to invest in livestock. Having a dream place is wonderful, but jumping in whole hog, everything at once is poor planning. What will you do for regular income? Have to have cash money for some things, like taxes and gasoline. You will NEED farm equipment to run acreage, with or without animals. I admire folks who are so self-sufficient, but it is exhausting. They work all day long, and it never gets any easier. Seems like they just get worn out before their time. We have horses, the heifer, get lambs in summer for 4-H and the freezer. Heifer is for sale, we got another horse so I need the grazing again. We are not fancy, but not patchwork either. Horses need daily handling, stalls cleaned, feeding with hay in winter. It adds up. Pastures need mowing to keep weeds down, improve grazing. I learned that in my Master Gardener class! My pastures are 1000% improved over "let the animals eat all the grass down" thinking. The horses graze now all summer, rotate the paddocks, no extra hay feeding even in dry August. Before, pasture was gone by July with no mowing. Cutting makes grasses grow MORE, grass is soft and edible, not dry and seedy. I now fertilize and disk the pasture, which improves grass growth too. Lambs have purchase price invested, grown on pasture grass, so meat is quite inexpensive. Daughter sells her 4-H animals, gets a good profit margin there for her school fund. Also did well with her Prospect Beef calf, though expenses were higher from us not knowing things to manage him better. Learning costs, but we didn't lose him like other beginner 4-H folks did with their calves! Lost money there, with dead calves. She still turned a profit, but not as good as the lamb investment/return project. Horses are just an expense, we enjoy them. Never make any money on them, just have great family times. Heifer was another idea, going to raise a calf to eat or sell, keep the fields grazed. Not much to feed her. That project is going when she sells. I don't have room for a bull and SURE don't want to keep one. AI sounds easy, but is not actually true. A friend has a bull and is keeping her for us while she is bred. Husband found a filly while heifer was gone, purchased her. Now heifer needs selling or we will be overcrowded. Have to see how that goes. Heifer is a Dexter, small breed about 700#, stands about 36-44" tall. Ours is the taller model, 42". They are a bit easier on the land, less hoof weight tearing things up, less feed needed and smaller finished weight for steers. So steers are ready in about 12 months, not longer time of larger breeds. Dexters do need dehorning, though polled is available if you hunt for them. I won't have horned cattle because of the danger of getting impaled. She has been a nice heifer, and I would recommend the breed. Like any other cattle, you have to train them. If they are handled daily is best for keeping them tamed down. She leads, loads, ties, gets groomed, comes when called for nightly stalling. But handling takes time, which seems to be short if you have lots of work on a farm. Your business plan will need money amounts for each project as you go along. Machinery investments. Old and used can work if you are mechanical, but maybe newer if you are not a fixer person. Learning mechanical skills could be something you do before getting the farm. College classes on that are easy to find. We paid to have our fence installed. We have high tensile wire, which many folks hate. Our installer put it in according to the manufacturer specs, 8 strands for horses, insulated on 4 strands for electric fencer, springs for tension, driven posts with double braced posts at each corner, all gates 14ft wide. Fence has been EXCELLENT for many years. Paying for install, was cheaper than just buying posts and material for woven wire and our own labor!! I LOVE my fence, animals stay home, no one breaks in. I would certainly pay for high-tensile again. Upkeep is weed whacking to keep it clean for fencer, putting a staple back up now and again. Sure you can do things cheap, but you end up redoing later. Lots of 2-3-4 strand tensile around here and you hear about the damaged animals, how dangerous high tensile wire is!! Well they cheaped out and didn't do things to spec, so fence is NOT to blame, builder is. Animals WILL reach thru wide spaced wires, WILL walk thru non-electric fencing, and then the damage starts. Cheap construction usually cost you later. You will need some sort of lockable building to keep tools, machines in. Check out costs for packages, garage or sheds are not too hard to assemble. But you need the costs to put down on your plan, to be prepared for when you reach that step. Planning your steps will give you a better view of the big picture near the finish with house and living on the land. Working with just land, no animals, you would be able to walk away if called up. No rush decisions because you will be gone in a week. And you can start saving money, planning for loans if needed to continue each step. Time spend learning, is a great investment. We can relate our experiences, but unfortunately, some things you have to learn by doing. I don't know any apprentice programs for farmer start ups! Do you know any crafts that would provide cash? Some places crafts can sell well, others, not so much. Apprenticing with a master craftsman, could gain those skills for you. Sorry this got so long, just hate to see folks beating their heads against the wall. Like me, with calf. "How hard can feeding a bottle baby be? EVERYONE does it, no problem daughter! I have fed bottle babies before (after being handed the bottle and returning it). We can do that". I was REALLY wrong there, should have been better prepared. Cost money to the Vet, worry, calf suffered for it. He came out OK, but it was needless because I could have gained knowledge ahead, not after buying.

Yep Beelize, My eyes were wide! Since then, it's been nervous out there! Syncal, I wanted to say how sorry I am to hear of your loss. What a horrible thing. I'd have felt frustrated, heartbroken, a host of emotions. Miss Kitty, we're in the Pac NW, about 30 or miles north of Seattle, though in the foothills of the Cascades. We have predators of every variety, but they usually remain aloof and we don't see them much, hence the surprise. The encounter was on Sunday. The following Fri-nite, we lost a bird. That cranked the nerve switch up a notch. One of our best muscovies mind you. We were still working on their permanent structure, but they had been fine all year in their pen. Whatever it was left a real mess. Based on all I've read about predators and their leavings, I couldn't i.d. it. Raccoons go for the head (I imagine becuase it has the bird by the neck) but our muscovy was not decapitated. Possums go for the guts, but ours was not disembowled either. He was on his back and filleted at the breast. What ever it was chowed straight in from that angle, and left the remains. Cougars, I'm told, usually haul away and bury their prey, but not always, so I'm not sure. Coincidence? Outside of a dog attack in broad daylight, it is the only loss we've suffered. Three days later, our neighbor saw the cougar in his driveway when they pulled in. It lingered for awhile as they waited in the car. The Wildlife Fish & Game were contacted again. We haven't seen Freddie Cougar since, so don't know. Maybe he went home. Sad fact is, he may have been homeless altogether. They're being pressed out of most territory thanks to so much development. It's not his fault. But I sure feel silly walking up to it like some cougar whisperer saying "here kitty, kitty". Call me Mr. Magoo. RJ gave me a rifle lesson. Doubtful I'd ever use it, but I shot my first tin can! Am thinking about mounting it on the wall over the mantel. :0>

OK I explain. It is a floating floor what we call in the UK engineered floor, so it is not solid throughout but a thickness of the wood mounted on a plywood base. It is a Malaysian wood, not so hard, so I suppose high heels could dent it perhaps, it is not the hardest. It is a click system not requiring glue, interesting. Now from Malaysia it says it has five factory coatings of which some contain aluminium oxide. It got worn out over the years. So a year ago I sanded the wood with the machines with the correct paper and vacuumed well. Then I applied one coat of Bona Traffic silk, you know the glossy one. I then noticed a number of parts were very coarse to the touch. So after some hours I sanded again with slightly finer paper but still coarse. Now I applied again Bona. Once again certain areas were coarse to the touch and you could see stains. So now I did a final very fine sanding but this was by hand with very fine paper particularly in the areas affected. It took me hours. Then I applied the third coat. I called the Bona representative who was at a loss!!! He gave me a bottle of Bona "refresh" it is a type of product to do another pass over. I applied it to the worse parts of the floor. Although one could see areas which were coarse to the touch and which did not look quite right the shine was sufficient to fool guests for Christmas. Now I am exactly one year on. In those area I mentioned there are now black marks. I attach some photos of the present situation with example of the black marks. (sorry I do not know how to create a new thread). I want to sand it and apply Bona again before New Year when my mother is visiting, my wife will just about tolerate me sanding on the 27th Dec. I had the suspicion it was the Bona product maybe the bottle I bought was old or had been exposed to low temperatures where I bought it from but the Bona representative told me it was very unlikely to be the case.

Thanks for the kind words about the pool, we love it! We decided on an interior product called Baja (Mini) Pebble in Electric Blue. It's very similiar to Pebble Tec, but the bid was roughly half of what we got from the 2 local PebbleTec subs. Not sure if anyone outside of Phoenix distributes it. We are fortunate to live relatively close to Fogco, which is one of the premier mist pump manufacturers in the US. Most of their pumps are sold to mist installation companies, but they also sell to regular joe's like me. I went over a couple times and worked out a material list with thm. Nice peeps! The pump is a 1000psi enclosed pulley driven pump located next at our equipment. We ran conduit under the patio for the high-pressure nylon tubing, which then goes up a column (still need to paint that) and to a tee. We purchased 7 10' sections of 3/8" copper pipe which were prefabricated to accept brass nozzels every 24". It took my father-in-law and I a total of about 4-5 hours to: figure out how to set up the inlet (with the filter) and outlet from the pump, pull and connect the the HP tubing, cut and sweat the copper pipe together, screw in 32 nozzels and fasten it all to the house/patio. My FIL is a very handy dude, so I would have taken 2x as long, but if you know how to solder and are fairly handy, you could do it yourself. BTW, They do sell brass couplings to use instead of solder. The slide is made by Step 2 and is called the "Naturally Playful Big Folding Slide". However, the brown/tan version that we have is not easy to find since Step 2 must have decided to change the color to brown/green. We found ours used on Craigslist.

jterrilyn, I am so very sorry that your baby is missing! I hope and pray she turns up very soon. I know the desperate panic you are feeling. When my Molly-kitty got out of the house and ran off a couple of years ago, I swear I hardly ate or slept during her absence. She did turn up after 3 days though, none the worse for wear. I'm sure your little one will come home soon. Keep us posted.

Make sure to look on Craigslist under Pets, and any other possible categories. Sometimes people find animals and post them there looking for their owners, or even to tell you they found them and took them somewhere (shelter, police, etc.

I hope the baby makes it home.

And chispa, people know that information, please don't make the OP feel any worse and add to her nightmare.

Post ads in the paper and get notices up around the neighborhood if you haven't already. Some people steal pets and wait to see if a reward is offered. Sick, but true.

Beekeeperwife; that's how the owner of the local dog found her's; someone posted on Craigslists; someone following his FB page caught it; the person also posted to their own FB; someone following the page saw that; the owner was able to get to the area fairly quick. She immediately called animal control in that area; emailed them a few photos; he confirmed it was her dog.

She also had a tracking dog go down but either he had run around so much the tracking dog couldn't find him or the dog was inexperienced.

People were also making signs to put on their lawns; as well as poles & local stores. We also contacted local vets & horse farms.

I hope she has been found. I know this awful feeling. Years ago right after we moved, our dog got out and his tags still had our old home phone number (long before cell phones) and address, so there was no way for anyone to contact us. He was gone all night, and it poured rain. Early the next morning we put fliers all over the neighborhood, and it turned out he had shown up on a guy's porch a few streets over and he took him in. Next day, he saw a flier and brought him back!

Praying for a good result for you, too!

We have a Facebook page to discuss community issues. Someone posted that their Springer had escaped and please watch for her. Another person posted that they had seen a Springer wandering in another neighborhood -- a cross the city boundary and in a very busy area. Owner went to store owners in that area and learned the dog had been picked up by the city dog control. A Springer rescue group saw that the city pound had a newly found Springer and came and got her. The owners tracked her down through all these places and found her in the next state! The power of social media is amazing and I encourage you to use it.

Any chance your dog was chipped? I hope he is home by now. Poor thing. Poor you! Please update us.

Update: Dog found a about ÃÂ¾ of a mile around the corner. I got a call this morning minutes after I posted a missing picture on the Animal Care and Control site. My little baby was well cared for, the lady who found her has a little Yorkie and she bathed my dog and gave her a cute little hair trim as she had picked up burrs along the way. I went totally hysterical and broke down into a sobbing mess when I went to pick her up. So, I have had maybe ten minutes of sleep when I wasnÃ¢ÂÂt imagining my little dog partially gutted by a wild animal. Now I get a call that my house is getting appraised for the sale tomorrow morning and I can barely move from fatigue. So happy to have my little baby home....thank you all for your kind words!

Yay!!!! A bath and grooming? That is hysterical. Do you have identification on her? If not, time to take care of that. Need her name, your name and phone number. Petco has a machine you can use.

Oh My !! I am so relieved. We wrapped Meatball in beach towels and loved him all up after he came home covered with dirt and silt and water from his power washing experience. He is still jumpy from it all but we are SO glad he is home.

I love that the lady "fixed her do " while she had her :) Sweet ! c

Oh, thank goodness! WHEW! What a relief! I know exactly how you felt with the flood of emotion when you got her back. When Molly came home, I cried and cried and cried. While laughing. :-D

Now. Go hold your baby on your lap while enjoying a nice cup of tea (ok, so I would say it's not too early for something a little harder, in this case), and enjoy the rest of your beautiful day!

I am so glad. I can't imagine how it must feel after 13+ years. We have had ours less than three and I am surprised how much we all care for her.

Yes, I need to get something for that kind woman. At first I was thinking of a little outfit for her dog. My cousin by marriage makes designer dog clothes (KO Couture) and has costumers around the world, really fancy stuff thatÃ¢ÂÂs in all the magazines. But IÃ¢ÂÂm thinking maybe this woman isnÃ¢ÂÂt the dress your dog sort (IÃ¢ÂÂm not) so then I was thinking about getting her dog some homemade organic dog treats from a specialty shop down the road. The woman seems to be a back to nature sort and would maybe like a plant instead or ??? I thanked her profusely but never thought to offer her a money type tip, IÃ¢ÂÂm always mildly offended by an offer of money tip when I have found animals and returned them to their owner. What do you think, maybe something for her Yorkie dog as a thank you?

What a wonderful ending! Something nice for her dog may be a nice "thank you".

When I was in high school my dog went missing for several hours. Since we lived near busy streets I was afraid that she would be hit by a car.

There was a sweet older woman in the neighborhood who would always talk to my dog whenever we were out. As I was out walking the neighborhood looking for my dog this woman was coming home. As she opened her garage door my dog came running out. I just happened to be in front of her house. It turns out that she had placed fresh baked cookies in the garage to cool, and we figured that my dog caught a whiff of them and went in the garage and was locked in when the woman left. Funny thing is, my dog didn't touch one cookie!

I was hoping all day that you would have a similar story with your dog. :)

That's a good idea gscienchick, think I'll do that. I think thatÃ¢ÂÂs safer! Her dog could be on a special diet where the treats might not be appreciated. She also doesnÃ¢ÂÂt strike me as a dress your dog like a person type. IÃ¢ÂÂm thinking a CarrabbaÃ¢ÂÂs gift card because if she happens to be a vegetarian at least there are some great salad choices, or pasta or flatbreads.

Can you believe I still havenÃ¢ÂÂt come down from the trauma? I was so keyed up all night. And guess what I saw in the backyard today a big daddy raccoon that somehow injured a bluebird. I saw the bluebird first flying all low and whacky and then saw the big raccoon go in for the kill. My bad dreams and thoughts all last night were not unfounded. We have lots of owls as well as Bob Cats and big snakes out here. Normally the Rottweiler keeps everything at bay but he is out of commission due to the ligament operation.

Again, thank you all so much for being so kind and letting me vent my worries.

I am so incredibly happy your baby is safe. I was so afraid to open this thread again!

Our house is a lost pet magnet, we've come across so many lost pets. One evening two dogs showed up and one was injured. They had licenses, but no other ID, so we couldn't contact the owner. The dog shelter was closed, so i couldn't even call them! We decided to take them to the emergency vet, since the one was hurt, and it turned out they were microchipped and the owner contacted. Found out they hand wandered MILES from home! Fortunately the injured one wasn't badly hurt, and we felt so much better finding them their owners. Once they were on their way I left the vets office-never thought to stay to tell them where we found them...but the vet had all our info and I knew they were in good hands.

I have all the dogs have their licenses and another tag with our contact info on it. Cats aren't marked...but they never go out-too chicken!

Thank heavens I'm only now seeing your post and could scroll down rapidly and read the happy ending. Whew!!! What a nightmare! I'm so glad she's back safe and sound. You'd think the little bugger would have learned a lesson, but with the bath and TLC, we can't be sure. ;-)

What a VERY strange co-incodence -- our dear friends next door lost one of their Malteses yesterday!!!

And we DID find her at the end of the long long day of searching the greenbelt and the surrounding neighbourhoods .

However the neighbour at the far end of the block had found her and stashed her in the house! Once her husband saw the signs that we has just posted -- they realized what had happened -- and he put her in the truck and drove out to find us!

How very very strange!

Teacats that is strange. I was surprised my little dog walked so far because she pretty much thinks she's to good to walk and wants to be carried. The Rottweiler is getting all the attention right now due to his operation so maybe she just thought she would get me back lol. Well she did!

Please make sure your fur baby is microchipped and has proper identification on them at all times.

Yes -- I am SO very thankful that both your Maltese and their little one were found -- alive and well!

Yes -- we were all surprised that their dog got as far as she did -- all the way down to an adjoining street corner (but not onto the street or past it -- thank goodness!) Normally -- she doesn't stray far from her mum's side (and is always on a leash when out-and-about) The little dog is chipped -- and will now be wearing collar and tags too! (she doesn't like her collar)

Must be Spring fever!

Teacats was your friendÃ¢ÂÂs dog old? IÃ¢ÂÂm thinking my dog may be at the end of her life span, she is by years but also she is acting very peculiar. She never ever walks as far as she did when she came up missing. Some days lately she has odd little puppy-ish bursts of energy and today she is abnormally clingy to my husband and me. I had her in for a checkup not long ago and had a wart looking thing removed from her back and some dental work (teeth extracting) on one side. There was nothing alarming but I did not get a full old age physical yet this year. She is also acting very disoriented. IÃ¢ÂÂm just so glad I got her back to be with her if she is coming to her end. She was such a little mommy comfort to me in the past when I had health issues. She would lay by my side and give me little kisses, she was a little worrier. It would have killed me if I never found her.

Well, the Maltese next door is about four years old -- so we think that she just took off -- had a run -- and then simply stopped and waited .... and the nice lady from the corner house picked her up! She is quite quiet today -- and just went for a normal walk with her Mum ...

Sorry to hear that your wee soul is getting a bit age-dodgy -- I guess that happens to us all as we age ... and I am so glad that she is back with you!
