Sun screen that is truly sweat proof does it exist?

I play soccer and also participate in a boot camp at lunch at work. Being that we are in TX and I'm fair skinned I have to wear sun screen. Is there a good sun screen that won't stop working and sting my eyes the whole time I may be out. For a soccer game I'm generally out for ~2hrs and boot camp is just an hour.

I played yesterday and put Coppertone spf50 sweat proof (blue tube) on 1 hr before, 15 min before, and during half time and I still got a bit of sun burn. Not enough for others to notice today, but I feel it and yesterday evening you could definetly see it.

I do sweat a lot so I'm guessing it is coming off as I certainly thought I had a lot on. Any suggestions for other brands to try? or any other suggestions on application etc.

When I am doing my bicycle touring I am out for 8-9 hrs and definitely sweating !! I use Neutrogena 110 for face. It is quite expensive but it works. I have had no breakout on my face etc when using it. Also my eyes didn't burn. I use it everywhere I have exposed skin not just face. I put it on as soon as I get up in the AM and then repeat often throughout the day. When used this way I don't even get pink ! Hope this helps. I get it at Walmart for the best price. c

I concur on the Neutrogena for the face. The Coppertone is fine for the body.

Okay, I've got a few minutes. Let's take a look at some of the questions and objections others have raised. First, let me say this: IMPORTANT SIDE COMMENTS: My purpose in starting this thread was to get help from others in evaluating whether this idea might be viable or not. (It wasn't to try to convince you that doing what I've suggested is the way to go.) Hearing your objections is helpful in figuring out if I've overlooked something important or if there is something that makes this idea a no-go or not worth it from an effort-reward standpoint. In responding to your objections, I'm not trying to be argumentative; rather, my interest is in evaluating whether they are a serious issue or not really a problem (or a problem that can be worked around fairly easily). On this subject, there was a bit of mild sarcasm in my first post on the 16th. I'm sorry. Please excuse me for that. AND NOW THE ACTUAL TECHNICAL CONTENT... Objection #1: Heat build-up is going to be a big problem. Answer: I'm not really sure why that would be, although maybe I'm missing something. If I have what's basically a cage made from insect screen/netting, the sides (and potentially the top) should all have a decent rate of air exchange through them due to air diffusion, if nothing else. This isn't a greenhouse with solid sides and roofing. I would expect it to be a few degrees above the outside ambient temperature on sunny days, but that's about it. Am I estimating temperature build-up incorrectly? Related Objections: Ventilation! Humidity! Regarding ventilation, we don't get a lot of wind around here in the summer and plants still manage to do okay. As mentioned above, air will diffuse through the screen, resulting in a situation that I would guess is not that much different from what it would be with no screen at all. Nevertheless, I could periodically run a fan if needed to circulate the air. Regarding humidity, air diffusion through the screen ought to keep it in line with the area outside the structure. Objection #2: It won't stop pests, or at least not plum curculio - no screen mesh anywhere is fine enough to stop plum curculio. Answer: Are you sure? The screen ought to stop moths (e.g. the Oriental Fruit Moth). As for plum curculio, check out http://www.greenhousemegastore.com/Anti-Insect-Screen/productinfo/IS-AI/ - they say this stuff will stop western flower thrips. Compare the size of western flower thrips (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_flower_thrips) to that of plum curculio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plum_curculio). Hi, Mocc. It was in reference to Ken's comment above regarding the dots. . . which I read after I had already posted. The spots reminded me of foliar fungus which is more prevalent in hot, humid climates such as humid areas of zones 7-9 of the United States. M. Zilis states that some fungi infect leaves already damaged by sunburn, frost, spring desiccation burn, and other problems. After reading Ken's comments I immediately jumped to the conclusion that he was thinking the same thing about the dots...but he did not return to refute my observations or offer more information. It was left cryptic. There are good examples on page 358 of the Field Guide To Hostas but it is copyrighted so I can't take a photo to show you. The uh oh was like "too late the cat's out of the bag" because I mentioned what Ken said about having another theory that would "make your head explode .... unless you note the specks". Does this explanation make sense? If you re-read Ken's post first and my link next (if you haven't already) it should help. I'm having a dickens of a time trying to get Ken to answer subsequent questions when he drops in on a post...the most recent on Knockout. He's off like a racehorse to some other forum, I'm sure and could possibly forget where he was? I dunno! :-)

Tim it's nice to have someone "listen" to advise. You do need to get that box off the post or you will be posting next week that your babies disapeared. It happens all the time, someone comes in for advice, doesn't listen and then are back asking what went wrong. So glad you are working on doing the safe thing! I would put the pole 10 ft from the fence being sure there are no trees or bushes that something could jump on the box from. Be sure to have the hole face in the same direction it is now. In this heat I am sure your babies are going to really need the vent holes. Take whatever you have on the old box and put it on the new box. Be sure to get the baffel on the pole too. Once this is all done take a pancake flipper and a shallow bowl or box to transfer the nest safley. Mom and Dad will hear the babies and find them but be sure to do this when you have time to sit back and watch the box to be sure they DO accept it. Good Luck! OH BTW be sure you are tracking how old they are so you don't look in after day 13 AND to know when they may be fledging....you don't want to leave your Dog out during that time.

That spray-on sports stuff really works but it feels like a coating of plastic.

I had the same problem - my sunscreen always ended up getting in my eyes and stinging -- I asked my dermatologist about it and she said the physical sunscreens shouldn't sting - it's the chemicals sunscreens that sting. She recommended Elta MD UV Physical SPF 41 - she sells it from her office but you can buy it online. It's a little expensive but I love it - it's tinted too so you don't need foundation. I never have the stinging eyes any more. But any physical sunscreen (one with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide - this has both) should stop the stinging problem.

Thank you for the suggestions!!

After looking the suggestions up on EWG and reading reviews I ended up ordering Elta MD, but instead of the one you recommended I got the one called sport. It was expensive, but it is not for everyday use and if it helps then worth it.

I must be odd, but the spray stuff doesn't seem to work as well for me. Doesn't last very long before I need to re-apply. Not sure if it is because it comes off easier when wiping sweat off with a sleeve or something.

I think that the Sport version still has a chemical sunscreen in it along with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide so it might still sting. If it does, try one that is just physical sunscreen and that should work.

Thanks gail - I read the reviews and it was specifically mentioned by a lot of people that it doesn't run into your eyes and mentioned by those doing sports and using it. So I hope it doesn't. I can only try and see. It was rated a 2 on EWG and I don't think it can make a 2 with chemical in it, but I could be wrong.

What makes something just a physical sunscreen? Is it just like an all-over concealer? I didn't realize there were 2 types -- chemical and physical.

Physical sunscreens block the sun's rays and chemical sunscreens absorb the rays. They both work, but chemicals can cause irritation. The physical sunscreens can make you look a bit pale because of the zinc oxide or titanium dioxide being white, but the tinting they put in the Elta physical helps with that. I use physical on my face but usually use a spray (chemical) on my body because its so much faster and easier to apply.

Well had my first test yesterday of the Elta MD Sport spf 50.

- no stinging in the eyes
- still ran some in my eyes
- a little sun burn, but I didn't have time to reapply at half time - forgot the tube in the car. Think it would have worked fine If I had re-applied as it is less than last weekend and doesn't sting or anything, just feels a little warmer than normal on my face.

I'll give it one more weekend to see if the last improves.

I doubt I can find something that won't run in my eyes. Can't stand to wear a sweatband though as they just itch and .....
