Fireplace with Wood Storage Area; what do you do with it?

The fireplace in my condo is made of very, red brick with a traditional style wood mantle surround that has been in place since the 60s. The fireplace takes up almost the entire wall space in the living room and I do feel the design is "out of balance" for the shape and space of the room. We purchased the condo a few months ago and the brick has been cleaned and the mantle will be repainted.

Part of the fireplace, immediately next to the fireplace opening, is an area to store wood/logs. Never really knew if there was a name for this area. I have been looking through posts/magazines, etc. to get an idea of how people might decorate this configuration other than the obvious choice of logs. After our kitchen has been installed and the rooms painted, we'll determine if we have to tone down the red brick or even decide to recover it.

Anybody have any unusual ideas or pictures to share, if you do have a fireplace design with a storage area included?
