Toxic and carcinogenic chemicals in our upholstery and mattresses

Just how safe is the sofa your setting on or that mattress your sleeping on? The Consumer Product Safety Commission (www.cpsc.gov) will be mandating new toughter flammabiltiy standards for mattresses and soon upholstery as well. In the past this legislation has been up to individual states and a voluntary national standard created by the UFAC. It has been found these chemicals applied to materials used in manufacturing to reduce fire hazards caused by smoldering cigarettes are not safe.

Manufacturers could offer products free from toxic chemicals, if the law would allow. Personally for me, I would prefer not to have all these additional chemicals in my home. Should we not have a choice when buying furniture or bedding for our homes? Here are some useful links:
