Mohawk hand scraped engineered Santa Barbara?

Has anyone used this in their home? Any pictures? I have read some negative feedback about engineered hand scraped in general (looking too uniform etc.), but I have not seen or heard anything about this one in particular. I found a sample months back and now I keep going back to it. Any feedback is really apprciated.

I replied yesterday but dont know where my post went???

I used Mohawk SB handscraped in Dark Auburn Maple in my home that is currently under construction. I think it is beautiful and not uniform looking at all.

Dont mind the dust :)

Mohawk for many years got their flooring from Columbia that is a domestic mill. Some products are no doubt imported as are products from almost any other flooring mfctr. Mohawk is never as price driven as is Shaw who is determined to be the low cost flooring provider. Just because its from a major cpt retailer wouldn't deter me. You have a major brand backing your purchase which is a whole lot safer than a no name import from an internet company.

Okay, I've finally managed to read all this thread. I love the idea of that portable timer, but of course, a lot of timers are portable. The stove in my Tahlequah house has a timer that only beeps once, so if I don't hear the one beep, I'm out of luck. Having a timer that goes with me wherever I am would be cool. Early in this thread someone mentioned a bench scraper. I love mine. I actually ordered my Christmas present, a dough rising bucket. Since I needed to order some ingredients from KA anyway, it made sense for me to go ahead and order what DH was going to give me anyway, to save shipping. :) As for the above mentioned microplane with a tray - I learned an obvious trick from a Bobby Flay show once. I felt silly for not thinking of it myself. It's simply to turn the microplane so that the blades are at the bottom and the sides are pointing up, like a U. Then you can grate and catch the zest or whatever in the microplane. I've done it that way ever since. I lucked out at an estate sale the other day and found a 8" Henckles chef's knife for $10. I missed out on the Le Creuset they had. As I walked into the kitchen, a woman was laying claim to the entire set they had for sale. Oh, well, she saved me a bunch of money! Still on my list for Santa is one of those scraper paddles for my KA mixer. Sally

My experience with Nuvelle interlock hardwood flooring is NOTHING but dissappointing. Installed the floor 2 years ago as a floating floor and it has moved away from the walls leaving about on inch gap from two of the edges and wherever there were knots in the plank the wood has split... the interlocking mechanism is failing in many areas . The inspector said it was installation error but where they say was installation error we are not having problems! It’s the incredible shrinking floor going on 2 years now and still shrinking... $6000 Down the drain. Bought from Home Depot by sun crest supply and all have used the inaccurate floor inspector report which was written a month after he inspected the floor and called to ask me questions because he couldn’t remember the inspection ! I have copies of many customers who bought the same type of floor and are having the same issues I am but Home Depot and Suncrest supply took our money and ran... no resolution for us ... saving for a new floor in the future. Be wary of the interlocking floating floor! The design is not working in our house in Colorado!

Ok....so Murphy's Oil is KNOWN for causing adhesion issues. To the point where many refinishes won't TOUCH a floor that has been touched by Murphy's. So too many of the Method cleaning products. I know. They are "eco" but that doesn't make them appropriate for wood. Here's why: they use coconut oil based soap products. As well as "fragrance oils"...oils are a "no-no" in the wood finishing industry. Anything that leaves an "oil" residue (Murphy's oil, coconut oil, oil soap, oil anything). I've seen three different "eco friendly" cleaning products cause massive issues with hardwoods and cork. Massive. To the point where the SOLID hardwoods had to be sanded down to their "last layer" before adhesion would occur. Very sad. Vinegar won't usually interfere with adhesion...but it will age a finish faster. I have a sneaking suspicion some of this is due to residue from cleaning products. Did the refinishing company do a screening to remove the cleaning material? Did you perform a floor stripping event prior to work commencing? Use of TSP is common - did anything like that occur? Rubbing alcohol used to determine if there was any residue on the floor (not that fun to work with...but can be done in a well ventilated space)? When it comes to construction law, the contractor has to be given the right to attempt to fix the issues before they are "made" to hand it over to someone else. They only get ONE attempt...but they are required to have the "first kick at the can". And their option for 1/2 the price goes towards a full sand and refinish is a little above industry standard. The 'good guys' offer FULL price of the buff and coat can be put towards the cost of a full sand and refinish. The "don't give a r@t's backside" type of outfits will leave you without any options at all. So your company is sitting firmly between the two extremes. I'm hoping that this is material based issues (the primer and the finish were defective) for your sake. But I'm thinking it is not. When a finish fails, it is possible to scrape it off with a finger nail and it comes of in white clumps (I'm not sure if this is the same as 'cottony'). And the closet, I'm going to guess, has probably been contaminated over the years simply by having things that have touched the floor then being put into the closet...like shoes, boxes, jackets, books, bags, purses, etc. If it touched your floor and then was put into the closet, it could have taken the residue in with it (in medicine we call this "cross contamination" or "touch contamination"). Good luck. At this point, you may be down to screening off the failure and then getting back to the original finish. At that point, you might need to look at the "shine" products that offer a temporary surface. They are more work. They need to be applied every 6 months. They need to be stripped every 5 applications (every 3 years) but they can offer you a few more years of 'nice looking' floors. Long enough for you to save up for your floors to be removed and replaced. As for an engineered hardwood that can be sanded 3-4 times....that requires a wear surface of 6mm thick...or more. And 14 years ago, those floors were very rare. More often the wear layer was 2mm-3mm. Only the SUPER high end engineered had the 6mm thick wear layer.

Vegas T - thanks for the feedback. Agreed, I think your floors look beautiful. If you don't mind me asking, how long is the longest plank, and (if you don't mind) how much per sq ft? Just want to make sure we are not getting ripped off. Thanks! By the way- love your arched doorways.

I will have to let you know on the length, I have never thought to measure...lol

We went through our builders and it was 14.00 per sq ft, a complete rip off but since the builder picked up all of our upgrades I dont mind. The cheapest I found it out here had we gone on our own was 8.99 installed. I didnt think that was bad.

I will have to post a pic of our arches in the loft... I love arches and this house is filled with them. I walked in and fell in love!!!

We're thinking of using this also. We saw another Mohawk handscraped flooring display locally. It was a Light Amber Maple, but the style was called Brindisi Plank. We're wondering if Brindisi Plank and Santa Barbara are the same product. Does anyone have any information on Brindisi Plank? I couldn't find any information on the Mohawk website.

Vegas T - I found this site while researching engineered floors. Thanks for the info on Santa Barbara and for the photo of your home. It is beautiful! This is the look I am trying to achieve in a new home. Would you be willing to share the color of stain you used on cabinets (what kind of wood?), stair railing, etc. and the paint color of your walls?

Jerry, is that a job you did for someone else? Do you remember what color/species of VV that is?

I'm strongly leaning towards their unfinished Hickory, and would love information from anyone who has actually worked with/owned it.

Also, what species did you use on that staircase - what stain to match the floor color?

McCarthy, you and I must have the same taste. I'm in the extreme beginning phase of building my new home and I picked out two wood floor options and the Mowhawk Santa Barbara is one of the two.

The other is the Appalachian Casablanca. I was leaning towards the Mowhawk. The girl at the store said it was more expensive, but when she checked prices she said it was on sale and cheaper than the Appalachian. When I compared the two it looked as though the Mowhawk had a much thicker veneer.

I look forward to reading about your experience.

Floorguy, it wasn't a bait and switch. I know retail. This girl was a bit new to this flooring store. She thought the Mowhawk stuff was overpriced and in her mind the Appalachian was the better buy. I was wandering around the store, saw the Mohawk Santa Barbara and inquired. She was shocked when she got the pricing that it was at the time cheaper.

I'm assuming you're a professional floor guy by your name. Can you give some insight on which of those two is the higher quality floor? I thought the Mohawk was at the veneer on top was thicker and the total plank just felt heftier. As far as look, they both looked top-shelf to my eye.

mccarthy3 - I am getting ready to order Santa Barbara in light amber maple from www.efloors.com for $4.69. I've seen it in person and it's gorgeous. lynn2006 - I have a similar wall color in my home. It's Benjamin Moore Wheeling Neutral.
