Mason update, he's gone...

It's been a difficult spring. I lost Whitney on March 14th and Mason died on April 14th just before midnight. I'd known since mid-December that Mason was living on borrowed time but his passing has hit me like a sledgehammer. I loved him so. I feel bereft, no more Dobes in the house. I'm grateful to have Jovi but I'm still a weepy mess.

Oh honey, I am so very sorry. He was such a beautiful boy. I wish I had the words to fill the hole in your heart, but since I don't, please accept my hugs.

Well, I was okay until the puppy pic with his bandage. My, I just wish they could live forever. What a joy our dogs are.

Marylu I sure hope you get to visit again. We are so close to Columbus. There are some beautiful restored areas near the river. We are going to the RiverCenter tonight to see Lily Tomlin. Bama : I love your photo of the arbor. Your garden is beautiful. Flowerlady. Nope it is so windy and cloudy and cold today that I am taking the day off. Didn't get to the movie yet but I have it for several days. allison : what a glorious garden you had. I have a fountain that I am going to move to the back brick patio. Also plan on nore white azaleas . I had forgotten about spider wort. It is everywhere around here. Seems to grow wild. There is a plant sale at a friends house on 4/22. It benefits Habitat so I always go. She will have hostas and ferns Maybe Spiderwort too. I will see what I can get. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

I have had issues with GW lately failing to email me when subsequent posts to threads come up, so you're not the only one it doesn't like! The mason bees have one generation per year. It makes them so easy to have around. You certainly don't need to bring in the bee cells to your home if that's not your thing. If you don't, there could be several predators that will mine little holes into some of their tubes and attack the developing larvae. Some suggest waiting til fall to bring them in, but if I remember, I just grab the blocks that are filled up and store them in the basement once the adults are no longer visiting the blocks (usually around the beginning of June). Bringing them in greatly reduces the risk of predators. The adults are only out from late March to early June. Once you've got all your planting done for the season, but the end of May early June, then it's time to start to monitor the boxes for adult visitation drop off. Yep, we've certainly had a few bees in the house! If you forget them in the basement, they will emerge by about mid April no matter the temperatures, so you gotta get them outside by the end of March. If a couple do emerge earlier, I put the freshly emerged adults into the refrigerator with a cotton ball soaked in sugar water 2:1 water to sugar. The cold slows them down and the sugar water sustains them for a few days to a few weeks. I then put the entire little box in the fridge until it looks like Mother Nature is cooperating, and providing them with blossoms to visit. To avoid any issues, I try and put the boxes and bee cells out when the flower buds on the fruit trees start to look like they are about to open. I wish I had some pictures of the larval cells. They are like little bullets with mud on either side. As a note, the roofs on the boxes for mason bees are totally not needed, though I think the little workers appreciate a little rain cover. I've seen people stack 2x6 blocks in their yard without any rain cover or roof, and they still keep their bees happy. In the late fall, you can often find folks selling starter mason bee pupal cells on Craigslist and EBay for around 20 bucks. Of course you can purchase them from online sellers as well. I never have had that many blocks where I had a bunch of surplus bee cells, but maybe I'll build a few more boxes this fall to increase the reproduction opportunity next spring. I'm not in it to make money, but I would be willing to donate some starts to someone wanting to give them a try if they produce enough next spring. Computer hard drive gone?

I surprisingly ran into this same issue. I've called HP before, the first time being when i took my new Pavilion Slimline out of the box and the hard drive was not being recognised. I called and was immediately told that it was no longer under warranty. I said i had just bought it about 4 hours ago at a major retailer. I was told it didn't matter, apparently it was an older model that was on the store shelves for some time now. Four calls and three hours later my computer was working, sort of. I had a few calls in the past 9 months, usually for not booting properly or at all. I'm still waiting for recovery discs from about 9 months ago. Last night i came home and my computer was frozen. I had to reboot it. It ran the CHKDSK (again) and afterwards i was missing about 100GB of data. I called HP today. After he said his greeting i opened with "pending hard drive failure". There was no talk of recovery discs. He had me run the hardware diagnostics. Surface scan : HD535-2W. The fun lies in finding a service location in Calgary. He said they had service centres & partners EVERYWHERE. Their server was offline so we couldn't get it from their website. He gave me businesses to call. In a city of over 1000000 people you'd think there would be SOMEWHERE i could go to have the hard drive replaced. He was very helpful. I just wish their computers were too. It would save me all of these calls, from which i am taking a break. This would be the first time i got someone who really listened to me too. It's really nice when that happens.

Thank you all so much. Whitney was a very special girl...my first Doberman, my first agility dog and a huge piece of my heart. I miss her tremendously but I'm trying to be grateful for all the wonderful things she's meant to me over the years. Helps to think of her running and playing with other beloved dogs over rainbow bridge. Golddust, I'm so sorry to hear that Dubs is having the urinary incontinence. I know firsthand, from when Mason was on heavy meds to drain the fluid around his heart, just how difficult it is to live with a dog that needs to go out every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I did that for a month before the vet decided to cut the meds back and quite honestly, I don't know if I could have handled it for much longer. It's a cumulative thing....I know you're not ever getting a good nights sleep anymore and no one can take that forever. It's great that you sew so that you can tailor/design diapers for him. He's a good boy for standing all the modeling. I really hope that his situation improves because it's hard on you and I do believe that it's hard on him too. (Mason, if he had an accident when he was on those drugs, was so embarrassed!) Hugs to you and Dubs, I really wish the best for both of you!

I'm so sorry. I felt like I got to know him some with your Jovi posts; he was a special boy & I don't doubt everyone's a weepy mess right now.

I am so sorry to hear about Mason's passing. Even tho you knew this was coming, the reality is so much harder. I hope that all of your years of wonderful memories and love will give you some measure of comfort as the days go by.

Poor Jovi is probably feeling a bit lost, too. Thank goodness you have each other.

Ah....what a champion Mason was, in soul as much as in agility. I feel privileged to have known *of* him, through your sharing him with us. I celebrate his spirit as I look through those fantastic photographs.

Please give Jovi nonstop hugs from us. I know when I had a similar situation--Gus, a young kitten/cat had completely bonded with my great love Bounder, an older cat who then passed in the younger cat's first year -- I actually saw mourning and *depression* in Gus for months afterward. Never knew I could see those emotions on a cat's face. It took him a long time to get over it, but he has now bonded with a cat who came in a year later, whose spirit is *remarkably* similar to Bounder's...

It's wonderful in a sad way that you and Jovi can help each other through this. And who knows -- maybe Old Master Mason will be coaching Young Apprentice Jovi in agility through the gauze...

OMG, I can't even begin to imagine the pain you must be in and I'm so sorry. Your babies were absolutely beautiful and that in part was because they are so dearly loved. I'm glad you still have one lovey to hold on to. Please keep us posted on how you're doing. Those pictures are amazing.

We lost our Brandi the Monday following Christmas. She was my bestest friend and I lost a piece of my heart when she passed. I share your sorrow and pain. (((Hang in there))).

He was a gorgeous creature....it's absolutely devastating and we understand your grief. We've had quite a few dogs over the 42 years we've been married; our solace is that one day we will get to see them all again.

We are losing my daughter's dog. She was diagnosed with lymphoma in December, was undergoing a chemo protocol which was not keeping it in check, and is now undergoing a rescue chemo protocol, which may be able to extend her life a few more weeks. It's just heartbreaking; however, the fortunate aspect is that Missy doesn't seem to be in any distress -she seems intent in living life to the fullest.

I didn't want to open this because I knew the sadness it would bring. With many tears, please accept my sympathy and hope that you will soon feel better. I have two dogs who are precious companions and so close to my heart that I dread the eventual day like this where I'll have to say goodbye. Those dobies were beautiful spirits, and I know you'll miss them dearly.

I'm so sorry, it's never easy to lose a pet and family member.

I have to say that the picture with his head wrapped in bandages does made me laugh. I hope you can find your peace in those wonderful pictures and from the joy your other dog can bring.

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear this. He was so regally beautiful. I pray you can find some peace and comfort. It is so hard to lose them, and you have lost two beloved pets so close together.

Thank you all. I've been trying very hard to pull myself together for Jovi's sake. I still can't talk about Mason or even think about him much without being weepy but, I've been making an effort to get out and take Jovi for agility training or something. Poor kid....I sorta crawled into a hole and pulled it closed after me when Mason died. Not only did she lose her playmate but suddenly her mom was acting "weird". After two days of that I slapped myself and decided that I needed to pay attention to poor little Jovi. She's happy now and she's helped me too.

It's just going to take me a lot more time to get over Mason. He really was a very special boy.

Uffda this is hard...

As I played with our goofy "Sammy" Callie today, I remembered someone is hurting. I've thought about you guys a lot, and wish I could do something...

It's been 1.5yrs. since we lost Sashi, our beloved Golden. I STILL get sad thinking about Her.

I do believe though, that Sashi is playing with both of your sweet Dob's! No more pain for them...just fun...and watching over us...wanting us to stay strong!

I showed these pics to my family, and both DH and DD let out "awwwwww"s simultaneously when we got to the one of Jovi on top of Mason. The agility is astounding and impressive, but letting a puppy ride on top of him shows just what a great, gentle soul Mason had.

That energy can't be simply gone.

Whitdobe, the pictures you've posted are so incredible. Mason was a stunningly beautiful dog and the pic of him in his bandages with his giant puppy feet just melted my heart. I'm so sorry that you're hurting but I'm glad you've got Jovi to help you get through this sad time.

Whitdobe, in your post, after Mason's full name, there's a string of letters signifying (I think) the agility awards and levels that he earned. Can you tell us more about them? I know very little about agility training and would love to read about Mason's incredibly accomplishments. I hope you're doing OK......
