Are there any other alternatives other than TurboTax or hiring an account?

DH and I have 3 out of state forms to submit - and this is where TT hits hard with fees. Our accounted wants $250.

Any advice appreciated.

A bunch -- depending on your situation. If all you have to file is the equivalent of 1040A or 1040EZ, there are a few Web sites which allow you to fill out forms and submit them electronically. It probably would cost a few bucks to submit out-of-state forms (or you could choose to do them on paper; the Minnesota short form is ridiculously simple), but it shouldn't cost $250. Do a Web search for on line tax filing and you should find them. This is not a good option, IMHO, though, if you have a complicated return.

There also are alternatives to TurboTax for on-your-own-computer tax software. I've used TaxCut (I think they call it H&R Block at Home now) without problems and may still buy it for doing my parent's taxes (ours are complicated enough that we're using an accountant).

I have used TaxAct for several years and like it a lot. Very easy to use, and our returns are complicated. I used it for our 1120S also.

Agree with steve_o on the state returns. Maryland has a simple form that you just plug in your numbers from your W-2 and 1040. I use that for my son. I would check the states websites where you want to file.

I found Turbo Tax in a lot of different stores around here. I think it's still the #1 tax software. I'm going to give TaxAct a try to see how it does. I already did my taxes using Turbo Tax, but decided to d/l TaxAct to see whether it gets the answers right. If so, I may use it as my primary next year. I'll post what I find after trying it out. I started it last night (but didn't finish) and a quick observation is that you have to go through a lot more screens to get something done. I also like the way TurboTax imports things from last year and uses them as a starting point. If you haven't changed employers, that can save some time. The way they prompt with last years' 1099s helped me realize I was missing one. If I had just entered based on what I had, I'd have missed one.

You can enter securities transactions, but the more specific update is that you can't enter any more than 99,999 shares in any one given transaction. Since I trade on the OTC sometimes, I have more than 100,000 shares in several transactions. SO, I was forced to use TaxAct, which just has a 15 character limit in the description line. Intuit lost me on that, had no choice. I can also say, now that I've filed AND gotten my returns accepted, that TaxAct was almost as easy as TurboTax -- the only problem was ease of navigation, and the significantly lower cost made the *only somewhat* less easy navigation very easy to take. But the rest of it was fine. OH, the only other problem was that I couldn't import from ItsDeductible, since ID has an exclusive w/Intuit. So I paid for the ID ($20) and paid for the state and local prep/filing (16), grand total of $36 and I'm done. Their communications were timely and much more helpful than Intuit's ever were. They want business, they don't expect it, iykwim. And please note: TaxACT is NOT TaxCUT. The link is below. I learned about them through a review of this year's TurboTax on Amazon. Kudos to TaxAct. In Canada, when we sell, we use the average price. I bought shares in a dependable bank (only half a dozen biggies and more highly regulated in Canada) 50 years ago for about $4.25 per share, paying about 10 - 12 cents annual dividend, at lower tax rate than one pays on interest income, which is taxed at top rate, could have sold in 2007 for $107. , paying $3.08 annual dividend ... and when they were heavily involved in the financial fiasco in a nearby country in 2008, share price went down to $40. or so. People said, "Oh, my God! What a loss - I hope you sold earlier!". When the loss is small, one chooses to let the fluctuation ride, and when it goes down further, one doesn't want to take that loss. I asked them whether they felt that a Canadian bank might go broke, this week or next? A number of experts said later that that bank darn near did go broke - gov't. bailout? Others said that they would almost surely cut the dividend, heavily. They didn't - it stayed the same for about 4 years. I hoped that one day it would pay me each year the price I'd paid for the stock in the first place - granted - about 40 years before ... when a dollar was worth a lot more. The stock has recovered to about $124. dollars recently, $111. now ... paying $5.60 dividend, $1.35 above the original stock price, at low tax rate. How much have I paid a money manager to take good care of it through those 50 years? Not one penny. If you'd like mutual funds, about 90% of whose managers don't produce better than the segment of the markets in which they operate, that's your choice ... but spend some time learning how money and investments work, maybe starting in the library. If you're in Canada, check "Canadian MoneySaver" magazine, which doesn't carry ads: maybe attend one of the 40 or so groups of subscribers that meet to discuss investments - I've been involved monthly for about 20 years. After you've gained some experience, maybe done paper trading for a while, put some of your investable assets into quality stocks ... and pay yourself the 1.5 - 2.5% or so of their price that you pay the managers of the mutual funds. ole joyful

Take the time to look at the history of sales in your area for the long term. Go back 25 years so you can see the ups and downs and run your own analysis of what you think the market will do based on history plus what is happening in your local economy. If you aren't ready to buy, then don't jump in. I find that in every market there are reasonably priced properties, lower priced and high priced properties. Every market has distressed sellers. In good markets they are harder to find, but they are there. Some sellers are extremely motivated due to some outside pressure in their life that has nothing to do with the local economy. It requires more diligence from your agent and if your agent isn't willing to put in the effort find one that is willing to do so. Note: if you have any vision at all and the funds to back it up, pick an ugly duckling with a functional floorplan. You can generally get those for much less. Those that haven't paid their property taxes in a year or two are also showing early signs of distress. Those that haven't paid HOA dues are in distress. There are any number of ways to cross check the properties for stressed sellers.

Ditto TaxAct pretty easy, allows you to enter all the relevant info, pay extra for the state filings though. Also keeps your info from the last year(s).

I'd go with a qualified tax accountant. In your case, you want to make SURE he/she is certified in the states where you need to file.

$250 for what you describe is actually a very good price. My accountant charges us that just for filing our federal and state tax forms (and DH and I really do all the work usually--he just has to plug in the numbers on the right forms). And it's well worth it, at that--my accountant's expertise is tax accounting, and we've never had a problem with our return--even the few years we've had tricky situations.

While you're in his office? Take the time to ask him how you can legally reduce your tax liability. It's too late for most of the things you can do to lower your 2010 taxes, but get the advice for what you should be doing for 2011--there are a LOT of things you can do that are legal that lower your income or the tax you pay on it. Take advantage of his expertise and make those loopholes work for you.
