Options for existing carpeted oak stairs and new walnut floor

We're starting to renovate a home we recently purchased. One of the more interesting challenges is trying to harmonize an existing red oak staircase with the skip sawn walnut wide plank floors we'd like to install. The budget won't allow for replacement, so we're looking for attractive cost-effective solutions. Dark staining the banisters and painting the risers and balusters white is a good partial solution, but the treads are challenges as they currently have an inset carpet runner. Thus, it's more than a matter of just taking up the carpet, since the center portion of each tread is plywood that is lower than the exposed red oak on the rest of the treads. We'd really like to lose the carpet if possible, but replacing every tread in walnut may be too pricey. Any great ideas?
