Another Stuffed Cabbage Question

If I try them in the slow cooker, what kind of rice should I use (instant, converted or long-grain)???

Likewise, if I cook them on the stove or in the oven, should I pre-cooked the rice (long-grain)??

Whether I'm doing cabbage rolls in the crockpot or the oven, I always use long grain or Basmati and I always cook it first. Cook it al dente don't let it get too soft.

Although I don't use a slow cooker, I always partially cook my rice for cabbage rolls. I use long grain but I don't think it matters whether you use converted or long grain just don't use instant. In fact, don't use instant for anything. It really doesn't compare to "real" rice.

It's only human nature to want to keep some of your hard work to yourself. Everyone here does the same. Because after all the work of trial and error, the failures, the final result can actually be quite easy to do once you explain it. As a crafter who attended many craft shows I used to hate it when a customer, usually a woman, was considering buying my work and her hubby would come along and say, "I can make you that" and hustle her away. What I have discovered with great satisfaction with tufa and concrete pots, NO ONE around my neck of the woods says "I can do that" I admit I'm a bad "I can do that person" as well. But when I saw Dena's leaf I was inspired, because at this point there is no way "I can do that":)

I love craftyrn's golobki recipe and it is my "go to" anytime I get a craving. It has the perfect balance of savory sweet and tart for my taste. I do often use 1/2 pork and 1/2 beef since finding ground veal can be difficult. Alexa ******************************************************** DianeÃ¢ÂÂs GOLABKI (craftyrn) a 3 # head of cabbage ÃÂ½ # ground beef ÃÂ¼ # ground pork ÃÂ¼ # ground veal 1 ÃÂ½ C cooked long grain rice 1 small onion, chopped 1 egg, beaten salt & pepper 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tsp ground horseradish 1 C condensed tomato soup 2 T brown sugar 1 T vinegar 1 C beef broth Remove the core from the cabbage, place cored end down in large pot with an inch or two of water & steam for 15-20 min. (Mom used to freeze the whole head the night before she made these--then cabbage leaves are just as pliable as steamed). Remove the head of cabbage and CAREFULLY peel down leaves by placing the cored end up and doing one leaf at a time. Mix ground meats, egg, onion, rice, salt, pepper, garlic and horseradish. Scoop out about 1/2 C of mixture and GENTLY pat into an oval. Place the oval on thickest part of cabbage leaf and roll once. Then tuck edges over the rolled part & continue to roll. Place all rolls into heavy pan that is lined with a few cabbage leaves, layering rolls as needed. Mix undiluted soup, beef broth, brown sugar & vinegar and pour over rolls. Cover and bake in 350ÃÂ° oven for 2 -2 1/2 hrs. (I've often used left over spaghetti sauce diluted with a little beef broth. Also can be made in casserole form. Just layer steamed cabbage leaves with a layer of meat and rice mixture, another layer of cabbage leaves. Pour sauce over all and bake.)

just found this thread... have made savory cabbage stuffing for years though My Tante did not................she made Cheese, cheese and cherry, and apple..........never any of it with raisens........the strudel I was making that Lee posted a few years ago was this...the dough is fat, flour.and water .no egg the cabbage stuffing 1 large cabbage chopped or shredded 1 large onion about 4 pieces of bacon partly cook bacon add onion......cook till begining to brown add cabbage and some water.........steam with lid on pan when limp start to turn as it begins to brown keep turning adding salt and pepper as you go until it is all evenly browned let cool before speading on the dough one large head will do about one small studel I use 2 because my table is 43" round and the overhang of the dough is about 3" this should not be rolled tight but sort of flipped loosely my family also makes stuffed cabbage but it is bavarian and we bake it and baste it with the juices .there is no tomatoe and gravey is made from the dripppings charlotte

There are many previous discussions of this question the search would pull up for you to read. Bt application times and rates of application are on the label and as mentioned you spray when you see signs of them. Just as with any pesticide, spraying when none are present is a waste and can harm beneficials. Does row cover help? Most definitely. Spraying is not necessary when row covers are used early and applied correctly. If the moth can't get to the plant she can't lay eggs. And as already mentioned all the plants you listed do not require pollination in anyway so the row covers never have to be removed. Dave /preventing-cabbage-worms-loopers using row covers discussions

I always use uncooked rice in my cabbage rolls, either long grain or basmati.
I like it that the moisture in the rice comes from meat and veggie juices and I think it makes it more flavorful. But I cook my stuffed cabbage for 4 hours or so.

Cabbage Rolls from
Sara Rosen

Separate cabbage leaves by putting head of cabbage in a large pot of boiling water and letting it sit for 20 minutes or so.
Separate out individual leaves and fill with the following:
Mix together....
2 pounds lean ground beef
1 egg
1/2 cup beef broth.
1/4 cup uncooked long grain rice.
2 cloves fresh garlic, crushed
Pepper to taste
Mix together and place about 1 1/2 Tablespoons full in each cabbage leaf, roll up and fasten with a tooth pick.
Meanwhile....shred the rest of the cabbage, an onion, a couple stalks of celery finely sliced and a carrot chopped fine, and a 1 pound 12 0oz can of whole tomatoes. Break up the tomatoes.
Place cabbage rolls in a Dutch oven alternatly with a mixture of the veggies in layers.
Add water to almost cover the cabbage rolls and between 1/2 and 3/4 cups brown sugar, juice of a lemon and a crushed clove of garlic.
Cover the rolls and sauce with a couple of whole cabbage leaves and top with a drizzle of catsup over all.
And bake in a 250 degree oven for 4 hours......check often to see that it doesn't cook dry.

I, too, always use long grain UNcooked rice. Cooked rice would be too mushy for me cuz I don't cook my meat either. Everything is raw and cooked together.

I also use long grain cooked rice any time I make stuffed cabbage or the pasta shells. The same filling works for both recipes.
