Facebook situation & question

I joined FB at urging of a relative overseas, so we can keep in touch. It's been wonderful, I have other loved ones stationed overseas and most of my family is out of state.

Here's my situation & question.

I have my account privacy settings on high.

Only Friends can see any of my posts, pics, etc.

I'm not going to use real names.

Mary is a relative I've knows since infancy (well, she knew me ;)

Love her dearly.

She's on my Friends list.

Her FB page is an open book.

I noticed someone I'd rather not have anything to do with on Mary's friend's list. I'll call him Joe. I noticed that if I comment on something Mary said, then Joe comments later, I can see what Joe said, even tho he's not my FB Friend. So I'm concluding Joe can also see what I said?

Carrie is a beloved relative like a sister.

She is not the same side of the family as Mary, but they know each other (small town). I comment on Carrie's status a lot. Suppose Carrie gets a promotion. I congratulate her. Then Mary comes along, and also offers congrats. Can Joe see that as well? He is Friends with Mary. He is not Friends with Carrie. But because he's Friends with Mary can he see her comment & mine on Carrie's page? Or does that all depend on Carrie's privacy setting (if she ticked off Friends of Friends can see things?).

Confusing, I know, but it's important to me to find out.
