Thinking of all of you who live in the area and those who have friends and loved ones in the area. Hope all are home and safe.. and so sorry your homes and neighborhoods have had to endure this horror.

I'm in shock at what's going down right now in Watertown.

Today is the anniversary of the bombing in OKC & Waco, so I'm going to have a creepy feeling all day long.

I hope that all the cooperation from the public will help keep everyone safe as well as help officials get this guy who is now apparently on his own. How frightening. Thoughts and prayers to all.

Yes, Soozd, I do invest my time to try to get design jobs (that means I do not charge for initial meeting). However, that is something that you or I would have to do if we had more inquiries than time to invest. It does weed out some good serious folks among those lighter inquiries, but it leaves ONLY very committed people in the market pool and recovers the expense of dealing with those less serios folks. I did work for a LA/design/build company that had a very high profile garden center on the south shore (MA). We had an average of 30 calls a day in the spring from people who wanted us to come out and meet with them about their landscape. When they were told about the $45 consultation fee, 2/3 of them would not continue. That left 10 calls a day to pursue. Those consultations would last about an hour. We often did quick sketches on site with graph paper and Prismacolor, but you could not keep them or copy them. Then we would go back to the office and write up contracts to either do a simple install or for design. That can take considerable time. While this is going on, we were also doing design work for those who hired us for that, and were were managing the jobs that were being built at the same time. When you consider how long it takes to construct a landscape, usually weeks, it should be clear that there is no possibility of constructing all of the work that is asked about. You would be faced with ways of filtering down the amount of work you do at every stage until it is managable at each of those stages. If not, you'd be faced with having three years of work booked in March. How professional is taking work on that you can not do for three years? That was definitely an extreme case, but that system was perfect for them. I worked for, and continue to do some work for, a very high end company that six to seven digit landscapes. The jobs are big and take months to complete. They do not do a lot of jobs each year because they are large, tightly managed, and involved. They don't advertise in a big way, so the numbers of inquiries are low and generally from sources consistant with the market in which they work. In other words the leads are usually of high quality and there are not many of them. There is no charge to meet with clients, although they are generally extremely wealthy. That works just right for that company. But, if you call from an area inconsistant with the type of work that they do, you will be subtly told to go somewhere else because they value those 5 hours of invested time managing the jobs they have and don't really want to take the work crews off of those higher production jobs to do a less productive job if they were to get it. Again, I don't see why someone can not take the time to do a mass email response to people once a week, or to put a staff member aside a time to return calls. However, you can imagine that each person calling wants to make a case for their job or wants some advice. It is rather difficult to make one of these conversations short without seeming rude. Then you have to do it over and over for each. I think I can empathise with those who will blow some of these off, if they are in big numbers. These are just some reasons why some charge for consults and others do not. Everyone's circumstance is different and it is not all about trying to milk as much money as possible. It is actually a way to manage the office's time by affecting the source of the work instead of the production end of it.

ginny, really, not to worry.you're o.k. if you had a shattered piece, it would be awful but i think with cmeent and a clean break there's no huge worry. and yes, mark's solution is for outdoors cement. also, i think the treflers person you spoke to probly was just giving the 'lawsuit safe' answer. they could definitely fix it if you don't want to try it yourself. they've done a number of things for me over the years. you might also want to talk to your local masonry yard; they do sell concrete/cement sealants. we used such on an outdoor slate fntn because of flaking potential but we have never treated our outdoor cement sculptures. best, mindy

My commute to work is 25 minutes, going "against" the traffic. Twice a week I drive from work (with my students) into Tufts Medical Center, which takes anywhere from just over an hour to 1.5 hours. It's a straight shot down 93, which is filled (bumper to bumper) with commuters, including many from NH . Once I get to the carpool lane, I zip by hundreds of cars with single drivers, many of whom (I assume) go through this commute daily. I could not stand it! I'd always choose to live closer to my job, in "less house" if necessary. I simply do not understand those who commute long distances, but it is a choice and I respect the freedom to choose.

In defense of 2- and 3-car garages dominating the front of a house's facade, they really do make sense if one puts function over form. (I have a side-load garage on my house, so I don't really have hurt feelings over this matter.) More and more, houses are being built with infrequently-used rooms exposed at the front windows (formal parlor and dining room), and the most lived-in rooms at the back of the house (eat-in kitchen and family room). I don't think as many people are concerned about the street facade as they are the comfort and privacy of the rooms inside. It reminds me of the evolution of televisions. First, they were built into beautiful furniture cabinets. Then, they shed the cabinets, and were mounted on top of tables. Then everyone began stuffing them into armoires so they could hide them behind closed doors when company came over. Now, we're mounting them to the walls and hanging them over fireplaces. We seem to have dropped the premise that we don't really watch a lot of TV, leaving the house's most frequently used electronic device up front and center, without shame or apology. And we watch them in our family rooms, tucked in at the back of the house, off the kitchen, away from the streetfront where people drive by and judge our homes.

So scary for all involved...I can't imagine being locked down and wondering what is going to happen next. Stay safe everyone!

Something that has been bothering me and I hope it's ok to ask...does anyone find it strange that these guys were still in town?

We woke up to the news also - last news coverage we saw last night was the FBI asking for help identifying the 2 suspects. I hope this is over quickly and with no more injuries or loss of life.

There was a comment by one of the experts on TV this AM, when asked to comment on why they didn't try to hide themselves from the security cameras. He said not to read too much into that, people can be very smart in some areas - like bomb making - but dumb in other areas.

One guy had explosives taped to himself, so it sounds like they were prepared to die.

Yeah I guess I meant you would have thought they would have left the area or the country before they were even suspects. It happened Monday and they didn't have pictures until last night at 5:00. I guess I read too many crime novels...

My parents live in Newton and also many relatives. This is so scary.
They fear the suspect that they are searching for may have explosives trapped to his body. I sure hope this ends soon, without anymore people hurt or killed.

Ironic that Boston can be placed on lock down in minutes but we can't do background checks for gun sales.

Thank you. We are under lockdown today. This hits way too close to home. We are just several miles from the affected area in Watertown - I am over there frequently. It's hard to explain to young kids why we can't leave the house. Hoping for this to end today.

I'm south of Boston, waiting to hear about the flights. My sister and family are due home from Ireland this afternoon. This is the biggest man hunt in the history of America. Thank God for all our security workers from local to state to the federal. They're doing an amazing job. Saying prayers for my friends in the lockdown area. Please God let there be no more casualties.

It's all happening about 1.5 miles from my house. Our town is on lockdown. It's all so crazy and spooky.

I'm pretty sure I heard earlier that Logan is closed today, Yaya.

I'm listening to police scanners and just praying for best possible outcome. It is hard to believe they haven't found him yet, but it is such a big area to search.

My niece that lives in Boston is currently visiting the Middle East. We never would have imagined that we'd feel she was safer there than at home.

hhireno - My babysitter who lives in Boston is also in the Middle East - crazy to think that, yes, she too is probably glad to be there instead of here. She is in Qatar and went to Switzerland first. (Is my sitter your niece??). ;)

Can't believe they just informed us that we have to go through the night with no idea where this guy is. Ugh.

I'm so glad the person who hurt and killed completely innocent people on Monday and yesterday will now face justice.
And I'm so thankful that the people of Boston can breathe a little easier tonight.

I keep wondering if it wouldn't be better if he was just dead. The trial will be long, expensive and I'd hate to see victims have to testify. Whatever his reasoning is, it won't be anything we can understand.
