Thoughts on this door style for mud hall on Georgian home?
Comments (6)Pretty. We have a 6 light over a full panel in our mud hall - we needed the light too. It looks great. I like yours as well....See MoreWhat style kitchen for a typical ranch house - any images
Comments (14)Hey there. We redid our kitchen in our 50's ranch last year. While we DO have a 50's ranch, it's not packed full of the mid-century modern look that comes to my mind when I think of mid-century houses. We just had a dark old 50's kitchen with oddly placed 50's cabinetry and the floating stove... When we re-did it, I did think about trying to not stray too far away from the style of the house. Not so much keeping with a 50's design aesthetic, more not trying to wedge a glass-backsplash-cherry-cabinet-stainless-dark granite look that a lot of my friend's newly redone kitchens had in their downtown condos into our little modest ranch house in a residential area. So we went with white cabinets, beadboard, restoration hardware pulls that weren't quite traditional and weren't contemporary, subway tiles behind the stove and butcher block. You can see in the picture that we stuck with very contemporary lighting - mostly because we already had it and I like that we can point the spotlights where we want them. A lot of people have commented about how the new kitchen 'fits' in the house well. We also repurposed a very 50's thing - the 8" deep broom closet - into a built in pantry and a spot for our basset hound's bowls. Our basset hound approves. Here she is, surveying her domain. We are working on this behavior.... She also approves of one of my favorite upgrades to the kitchen... a dishwasher!...See MoreFisher & Paykel 36” gas range, Classic style
Comments (1)I have a 36" DCS, now Fisher Paykel, range that is approximately 14 years old. Not sure if they were bought out or just renamed. If just renamed this could apply. I have had nothing but problems. Have replaced the same parts multiple times. Have had an issue with a child getting burned on the panel below the oven. They installed a newly designed panel. Also problems with the back air intake. They had a special piece engineered to try to help. Didn't work. Not sure if I just got a lemon, but would try to investigate if the one you are looking at is known for ignitor problems. Happy shopping!...See MorePairing Design Style to a Basic Colonial House. Any rules?
Comments (2)My dad, product of the Depression, always thought you had to have all the furnishings as soon as you moved. So, many of the furniture, paint, window covering decisions my mother made quickly without considering how we would live in the house. My pace of decorating made him crazy (or he thought I was crazy?!). I move, then spend lots of time watching how the sunlight affects each room. Do I need a big sofa or a smaller one with trimmer chairs? Do I need to block the view of the neighbors with blinds or do I want the moonrise to be featured? What color paint is always after I pick fabric because it is easier to match paint to fabric than try to find a drapery that matches already painted surfaces. I shop at antique shops and consignment stores. Decorating my house is not a job that has to be on a time clock. Move in and let the house guide you. Have fun. Let your style evolve. You don’t have to be tied to a style: good design is timeless. Make yourself and your family comfortable and happy....See MoreSt561 W
