Shin splints? Ouch!

I am training for the Marathon inside of a gym on a treadmill and have been having all sorts of problems with what I think is shin splints? I saw my sports doctor recently who put me on celebrex, which does nothing for my pain. I saw him last night at the gym and he's thinking of sending me to a physical therapist. Have any of you gotten shin splints (on both legs) and what do you do to treat it? The only thing working for me right now is masking the pain with a quadruple dosage of anti inflammatories. Ack!

I had them in college when I was in dance class every day.

I did an ace bandage wrap, wrapped around the shin such that it pulled from the outside of the leg inwards, if that makes sense. If you stick your right leg out, it would be counter-clockwise, if that helps visualize. The ace wrap helped alleviate the pain.

Physical Therapy, to help heal them and set you on the road to be able to prevent them in the future, would be wise.

Many years ago when I was training for a half Marathon I developed shin splints. I relied on lots of Ibuprofen during that period and for the Marathon. Afterwards it hurt so bad that I had it xrayed. I ended up with a breakage in my shin and had to stop running for a couple of months. After that I decided to stick with shorter runs. You might want to ask your Dr. about the possibility of this happening to you. Good luck!

It is highly unlikely that it will be damaged, others have used it without ill effects. Leaf shine is usually some kind of oil and I don't understand why it would be harmful. It won't do much good either, and I have never used it, I just spray them with water. One possibility is that it may remove the blue wax coating that is present on some cacti (maybe on some succulents too?). Just a guess. I have heard that the layer can be removed with a soap solution, but I don't think it is necessary.

Thanks Ladies! Am rushed for time but wanted to say that DH has ordered the cast cover that Outsideplaying and Cat Mom suggested. It should get here on Friday. Thank you for that one, Ladies!! Have made and frozen 4 dinners so far: Shepherd's Pie, Spaghetti and my homemade meatballs, Meatball Stroganoff and (today) my homemade Chicken Noodle Soup. Thanks to Joanie for reminding me to think about comfort foods. I made my own personal comfort food: my homemade Chicken Noodle Soup this afternoon! Thanks to Jshore's suggestion, I'm making sure that everything is pre-cut into small pieces as I won't be able to cut things for at least the first week. I had NOT even thought of that before she suggested it! I have my list (thanks to you all) of things to do and to buy in the next 4 days and am checking them off one by one. I feel so, so much more prepared because of you all. I am usually a super-organized person, but have found that in stressful times like this, I do need a little help from my friends. Thank you for that! I'm off to go iron 3 or 4 shirts for DH. By Sunday, I'll have a at least a week's worth ironed and ready for him. Lynn

Yes, my step dancing teacher showed me one that did an amazing job of helping shin splints. It takes 2 people. Throw your leg up on a table. Have someone gently push on your foot so that your shin area gets a good stretch. What a difference it makes.

I have a very small wart on the inside of my left ring finger, at the first joint. Doesn't really bother me. But I have one on my left leg near the shin bone. It is flat and about the size of a dime. Doesn't bother me except in the summer when I'm wearing shorts. Looks gross, even though it is skin colored and rather smooth. I asked the dermo doc about it and he said: "leave it alone, it is just a wart!" But I want it gone. I read in the newspaper recently, the Doc who replaced Dr. Gott wrote about warts. His advice was to use duct tape, the silver, not the clear. Cover the wart with DT. Leave it 6 days. Remove it and soak and file the wart. Leave it uncovered overnight, then cover with DT in the morning. Repeat for 6 days. Do this for 6 months or until the wart is gone. Not very practical for most people. I might try it. If it works it should be gone by summer. Sue

I was having a terrible time with shin splints from Step Dancing. (lots of high bounces and hops and you are on your toes and no pading, just leather soled shoes)

My dancing instructor gave me an exersize that absolutely fixed them. It takes 2 though.

Put one leg up on a table. about the high of a kitchen table. Keep your leg straight but relaxed. Have someone gently press on your foot (at the top between the middle and the toes), so your shin area is stretching, you'll feel the relief right away. Hold it for a slow count to ten and repeat with other leg and as needed. It is better if you can do this before and after you run.
