samsung lcd tv- i am so disapointed!

Could this be the tv having problems is it just how they all are: We just got a 40" LCD Samsung tv. The picture is really bad, not crisp or clean. So DH went ahead and got the cable box thinking it would fix. The cable box is now in and we have some digital chanels and the tv still isnt crisp clean picture. SO dh tells me that: maybe the larger the tv gets the image stretches and the quality sucks...

Is this true or does the TV it self is crap? The picture seems distorted at times. Here is the specs: 8000:1 ratio what ever that means. Anywyas- am i missing a cable i need to buy for better picture quality or did we just pay $$ for junk?

Samsung tvs are good tvs. It is highly unlikely but possible the tv is defective. More than likely it is a signal related or picture adjustment issue.

Digital cable isn't a performance increase feature it is a compression method designed to fit more channels into the mix. HDTV cable is a performance increase.

Have the cable company test your line for a proper amount of line voltage. If the signal coming into your home is too low it can cause picture problems. So can having too many splits in the cable signal inside your house.

Also, check the picture controls on your tv. Make sure the picture settings are in the standard position not vivid.

Many tvs are shipped with the contrast and sharpness settings at maximum. In most homes those controls should be set about in the middle.

I'd recommend getting a disc that will help you calibrate your HD Tv. Two of them are AVIA and DVE. Take a look at the second post in this thread.

A service contract essentially is an insurance policy, with you guessing that you'll need to spend more in repairs than the service contract costs. They typically are huge moneymakers for the companies offering them. Your best bet is to get a copy of the service contract and find out what it covers and what it does not cover. If your TV is likely to be a victim of abuse from kids or pets, see if that kind of damage is excluded. Find out if the service is in your home or if you have to truck the TV to a service facility -- and find out where they are. Find out if there are odd requirements like annual inspections or other likely exclusions (lightning damage, etc.). Then take the warranty that comes with the TV anyway and figure out what the service contract adds. Frankly, I've never had one on which I made out. So I tend not to buy them anymore. Oh, and BTW, this may be too late for you if you walked out of the store with the TV, but your cost for a service contract is negotiable. See if they'll offer it to you for less or even throw it in.

Hi,With all the changes coming down the pike in years to come, choosing a TV can be daunting. We are looking for three 19-20" LCD TVs to be used as secondary TVs for bathroom/bedroom/kitchen nook - just straight TV watching, no DVDs. We're on cable -- only the main TV having an actual set-top cable box; auxilliary TVs just use cable input. Apparently TVs under 26" are not required to have ATSC digital tuners, and I haven't found any small TVs that have them (although I'm seriously confused on this point). OK, so what to do here -- I don't want a set-top cable box for every little TV in the house when everyone goes digital. These auxillary TVs would presumably have NTSC tuners - how's that going to play out? What's the most economical strategy in the long run? Buy LCDs w/o the ATSC digital tuners and replace them all later? Will there be converters available to access digital signals w/o forking out extra bucks to the cable company for each TV? What screen ratio would be best to buy, 4:3 or 16:9? What makes the most sense for secondary straight TV watching (via cable connection)? Also would appreciate recommendations as far as brands -- LG? Samsung? Sharp? Sony?, etc.? It's all too confusing - can't even write a proper question! Thanks for any input.

more than likely any LCD TV will (Unless a great big one) will use less power than the 13" TV you have now. Look at the back of your TV, it should show the power (Watts or VA) that it uses. Then look at the new TV sets you are interested in LCD or LED LCD. You can even look the numbers up on the net for TV's you may be interested in. Most "LED" TV's are actually LED LCD TV's and you will pay more for these compared to a "regular LCD TV" soo you wont live long nuff to see the money you save going the LED LCD route (yet). Course stay away from plasma, they are gettin the power levels they draw down, but if you leave the TV on all the time , as you say, The LCD will last longer. Good luck Gary

Just saw your post regarding your fireplace mount. There's a lot of variables when mounting over a fireplace: wood, pellet, or in your case, gas - zero clearance insert or real brick built fireplace - then LCD or plasma (plasma generally has cooling fans w/filters that don't like smoke & dust) - smoke is attracted to the screen - temperature rising up to the TV (which usually in most cases is not as bad as you'd think) - height of the TV which should be at eye level at the center of the screen or worse case, bottom of the screen (but then that also depends on how much TV you watch) and yes a tilt mount helps with higher mounts. Next, is on a finished brick fireplace you don't know where studs are or what's behind them - any installations that I've done I have always gone through the mortar into the stud or header, as opposed to damaging the brick which is difficult to repair if the mount is taken down. And, the big next, is installing an electrical outlet behind the TV and then finding a way to route the A/V cables to the equipment - running across the brick really doesn't create the "Photoshop look" people see in magazines! I have done some installations where a remodel was being done and they could open up a wall so you could see inside where you want to mount and figure out a cable route (keep it expandable) and outlet installation. Having said all that it can be done but I have also have had customers who wanted me to take down an installation somebody else did over their fireplace. I won't do a fireplace installation unless I am very comfortable about the installation, the customer understands everything, and then it will often be much more expensive than mounting on a standard wall. So, just be sure about what you want and make sure whoever does it, does it all to code... you wouldn't believe some of the stuff I seen such as AC power cords being fed down walls, etc..

You haven't provided any information which we can use to assist you.

Samsung arguably makes the best LCD monitors available. I doubt it's the TV.

How do you have the cable connected? Are you using high quality HDMI cables? Did you properly set up your cable box to put out the correct signal and monitor to receive that signal?

We need more information.

An interesting fact I have heard is some people who have high definition televisions do not even realize that they are not receiving the high definition signal properly because of user set-up errors.

Get that Avia disc and adjust the picture properly. When I got my Panasonic plasma 5 years ago and set it up fresh out of the box, I was not impressed, thinking "I paid $6000 for that?" I bought Avia and adjusted it ... MUCH better.

And *don't* use the stretch modes to watch a 4:3 picture. That's just goofy!

1. Where do you buy the Avia?
2. How much is it?
3. What is a 4:3 picture?

Do a search for "avia home theater." You should be able to find at online retailers such as Best Buy, Amazon, Buy.com, etc.

IIRC, it's a bit expensive for a DVD. $35, $39, something like that.

4:3 is a standard "square" television picture, not wide-screen. "Full-screen" in DVD jargon (meaning the picture fills a regular TV screen). LCDs and plasmas typically have one or more display modes that s-t-r-e-t-c-h the square picture to fill the wide 16:9 ratio screen and eliminate the blank sidebars. It makes people, buildings, objects look fat and squatty. Many viewers don't like the sidebars and would rather have a distorted picture that fills the entire screen. The only legitimate reason to do that is as protection against burn-in, but burn-in isn't as big a problem as it's made out to be ... and there are other ways to reduce the risk that don't involve a goofy-looking picture.

Don't you think you're jumping the gun a bit? She didn't even tell us how she has the televsion hooked up. It could be hooked up with a coaxial cable for all we know!

You calibrate AFTER you hook it up correctly.

I think dadoes was answering my question, and I appreciate it very much. I bet most people would agree that yes, hook it up right first and then calibrate.
