I've done the coffee filter in the bottom of the potted plant.

Another way I have used them: as a coffee filter in my small percolator pot when I ran out of the filters bought for that type coffee maker. I just cut circles the size of the basket from larger drip basket filters.

When sprouting cress seeds, I used portions of coffee filters placed in small container to act as the sponge to hold water to sprout the seeds.

I use them for testing germination of garden seeds. Write the name of the seed on the filter. Moisten the filter. Place a few seeds inside the filter. Place filter in a plastic bag or lidded container. Put that on top of the fridge (for the steady warmth) and see if the seeds germinate. With peppers, which are often reluctant to germinate, I plant those pre-germinated seeds.

Does anyone know if cloudy chicken stock can be run through a coffee filter to clarify it? Will it clog the filter? Will it clarify the stock?

Besides coffee, I use them for numbers 1,7,8,13 and also to germinate my garden seeds(basically what Jimster does) instead of paper towels because the sprouted roots can't dig into the filter and get damaged when plucking them out to plant.
Oh, and also filtering the vodka that I soak catnip or other herbs in.

Jim, yes you can filter your chicken stock with a coffee filter and yes it will clog, so you should be prepared to use several. It will clarify and make it attractive also.

Do you have to drink coffee to join this club?

I use the basket type at work as a popcorn bowl for my microwave popcorn. I don't have to stick my hand in the greasy bag that way.

I printed those out to tape to the inside of the cupboard where the coffee goes. I've used several of them so far.

No Cathy, I never drink coffee, but keep the filters.

Jimster, I tried to filter my stock with them. It isn't practical. It clogs too quickly. A fine metal strainer is better. Also, if you pour the stock into a taller container and let it sit undisturbed, the stuff will collect on the bottom, and you can just turn it over and scrape it off.

That doesn't work if you let it cool and then pour it into another container. Then it gets all mixed in.

Go ahead and laugh, but I did just that. I had been out of work for 4 months, and after 5 interviews and a ridiculous wait for a "yay" or "nay", I was hired. To celebrate, I bought a bottle of Ciroc and a bottle of Hypnotiq... that's about $50.00. I get home, and as I'm headed to the front door, I DROP the bag and both bottles break. I almost cried.

The Hypnotiq was completely gone, (I hope my Hostas enjoyed the runoff...), but the bottom third of the Ciroc bottle landed standing up, and there was still vodka in there.

I heartily agree with your solution weed! You're not alone in wanting to save expensive alcohol, I would have done exactly the same thing (if I'd been quick enough to think of it).

I use coffee filters the same way Deanna does. I hate putting my hand in a greasy bag of popcorn so if I'm at work I just grab a coffee filter.

I don't drink coffee, but I have heard of 1,2,3,5,7, and I will use #15 in the future, if the occasion arises. I buy coffee filters specifically to clean mirrors and glass tops, as well as to recycle oil, and I do not have a corresponding coffee maker. I buy the ones that have flat bottoms - not the Melitta kind, and I get them at the dollar store.

When I strain/clarify chicken broth I put the filter inside the sieve. Pour some chicken stock in and remove the filter when cloged and add another filter. Beautiful stock!

I use coffee filters for coffee and keep a package on my potting table in the garage. They really are great for the inside of pots. Last year my 5 year old granddaughter asked if she might have some to take to school. She told me her kindergarten teacher used them for their afternoon snack. I thought it a good idea and bought her a new package.

I use them for bouquet garni in soups & stews. Just put the fresh herbs inside and tie with a nice length of kitchen string. Tie the string to the pot handle and voila!
