Swans Like Sushi

Lately I've been watching the ducks, geese and swans which winter in the inlets, bays and coves here, spending their days swimming in icy water, dabbling and diving in search of food. There are mallards, buffleheads, mergansers, Canada geese and brants among others.

Today I observed swans feeding on sea lettuce, the first time I have been able to see clearly through my binoculars the food any of the waterfowl were eating well enough to identify it. Sea lettuce is an algae very similar to the seaweed used for making the sheets of nori used in most kinds of sushi.

Swans also eat fish, raw not cooked. Are you starting to get the picture?

All that remains of the essential ingredients of sushi is rice. There is no wild rice here so far as I know. Swans do eat seeds and grain however, and would eat wild rice if they had it.

Let's not worry about wasabi and soy sauce. Swans can deal with that detail I'm sure.

If anyone wants to discuss birds OT, let's meet on a conversation thread.
