In Ceiling Speakers -- how many & quality ??s

I am remodeling my kitchen/living room -- removing walls to make a 650 sq ft "great room" (kitchen on one side of the new island, living room on the other). I want to install in-ceiling speakers. I am considering Speakercraft ($200 ea) and Martin Logan (Helios10 w/ aimable tweeter $300 ea). Just getting a Bose system is also an option.

This is for AUDIO only and not for a TV surround sound system -- music, spoken word, radio. I have a few burning questions:

1) Can I get away with TWO speakers in this space, or do I need FOUR?

2) Is SONOS worth it, or should I just buy 2nd receiver instead of trying to set up wireless Zigby system?

3) Does anyone have experience with the Speakercraft product -- is the sound quality good (I realize that's a personal taste issue -- but is it robust & full range, even at low volume??)?

4) What about Bose in-ceiling vs the ML or Speakercraft? Anyone with a Bose sound system in a living space?

First off, thank you. It's refreshing to hear when somebody knows that television surround sound does not go into the ceiling - however music is right at home there.

I'm guessing this is somewhere around 20' x 30' split down the middle. To decide on the number of speakers you'll need to think about where you'll be in each area, and if the stereo sound and image will be correctly presented in that space. I think it will be 4 speakers, though.

Don't know if this is raised ceilings or not but plays a major factor in layout as well.

Speakercraft has been a good middle of the road installers brand and I'm surprised they now sell through retail online.

Martin Logan of course has a very good reputation with their electrostatic speakers but does that mean the standard in-walls are worth the price? I don't know.

What I do know is that the ceiling/wall, the acoustics of the room, and the placement, are now part of the equation. I've done speaker calibrations on high end speaker installations, average, and low end speaker installations and it's a toss up - there are just too many variables.

Going the Sonos route and Zigbee is fine but may create complexities you may just not want to deal with. What about a second zone from your main receiver? If not, another receiver may be a simple setup for this area - many have auto calibrate modes.

Bose can be great for a plug and play setup but tends to be a little too proprietary for my tastes.

Look around a little and see what else is out there.

I agree that you are looking at minimum of 4 speakers. I use 4 speakers in an area of 20' x28', in my kitchen/family room.

I also like the idea of a receiver in that area; you'll have more control and flexibility.

I would not purchase the Bose systems, too much hype for me, and I have a friend that has had nothing but problems with his new Bose system. It crapped out three times, and the in-store warranty only gave him another Bose system to replace it.
I have replaced only 2 (of 22 PSB's) that I own) of my ceiling speakers with Sonance 6", and they are giving me good value for the money.

For outdoors on a covered porch, you can use "true" outdoor speakers which come in a wall mount or you could use indoor ceiling mount speakers rated for the temperatures you experience there. The issue with really long porches is if you want the entire porch on one zone (all controlled from one keypad so it plays the same source on all speakers), then you might consider going with 4 stereo point speakers on the 1/3 lines of each porch length (about 12ft apart on the 35' and 15' apart on the 45'). Depending on the volume and use, you usually need more amplification for outdoor speakers than indoors since sound is not reflected in the room. If you want to just have sound while you're on the porch and not in the yard, then you can get by with smaller amplification and/or speakers. Most basic volume controls with built-in amps are for a pair of speakers (right and left channels) so each stereo point speaker needs its own amp (4 speaker wires from amp to the R&L input on the speaker). Russound makes an Outback Solo outdoor speaker and they have indoor ceiling mount speakers too with plenty of amplifier options. Other options are rock speaker and even hanging flower pots that double as speakers for a totally invisible look.

Honestly I think you're way overdoing it. I think you should put two speakers in the kitchen, none in the dining room, and buy decent equipment for your family room. I can't for the life of me imagine why you need four speakers in the dining room, directly adjacent to the family room and right in the air travel path of the sound coming from your front two speakers, which should be the best sounding speakers in the house. The family room, like it or not, is what will be making the sound for the dining room. You will never want to be listening to one thing in the dining room and another in the family room, it will sound awful for everybody. If you did this, one benefit would be that you could get a nice two-zone 7.1 amp and be able to control everything from your phone.

If installing a TV, spec out your TV size, determine vert. & horiz lengths, pull a wire left & right and center (above or below TV depending on TV location, fireplace, etc.). Leave extra wire so you can decide on whether or not you want in-wall or "on-wall" speakers. For "in-ceiling" LCRs, space accordingly in reference to your TV center. Install left and right in-ceiling or in-wall surrounds in reference to your seating area. Without knowing the layout of your room, I can't specify exact distances, the above are just generalities and are based upon a installing a flat panel TV, not a projection screen. Sub-woofer placement - although low frequencies are omni-directional, they always have a "sweet spot" - to be on the safe side, for powered subs, pull two RG6 cables, far left & right corner front of room. Also, maybe pull two 14/2 wires in the event you're using an in-wall mono-sub with an external amp. This will allow you to use either location for the best placement of sub. Two subs are always better but not always needed. make sure the contractor installs AC receptacles in these areas as well. Room aesthetics are most certainly are a factor - know where the furniture is being placed. There are also wireless options if things get rough and go south after the fact - Sunfire makes a decent wireless sub kit if you have to go that route. There are lots of others options to consider for speakers such as installing "back' speakers for 7.1, Dolby Atmos front height speakers, it all depends upon your final design. And yes #16 wire will work, but have your contractor pull at least #14 speaker wire. Don't forget a few CAT6 wires (for HDMI extenders if needed, network data & control) behind the TV. A dedicated media closet would be nice for your components, but a quality low profile audio cabinet will work fine - such as Salamander Design. Pre-wire as much as you can - pre-wiring is cheaper than opening up walls later on - it's all up to you. Plan the work, work the plan. -FP

If you have existing speakers and the wires are running to a common point, then you just hook them up to an appropriate amplfier and your audio will play through the speakers. Many larger amps can drive multiple speakers (3-4 pairs), or there may have been a separate switching device to select which speakers are being used. However, technology has changed over the years and few people are buying the old conventional "receiver" that includes an AM/FM radio, amplifier and connections for a record player, tape player, CD player, etc. Leaving the speakers and wiring in place is fine, but you may never have anyone who wants to use them again. Making them functional may also be straightforward, but you need the right type of receiver to plug in where that "ton of plugs" comes together. If someone in the family wants to experiment, I have seen many high quality receivers at the local Salvation Army store and at estate sales, and they are not expensive. Bruce
