dvd recorder basic questions

I've been talking to friends, co-workers, and salespeople at retailers as well as checking the net and I'm still confused. If anyone could help me out here I'd really appreciate it.

I have Directv satellite. I'm looking to buy a dvd recorder so I can record the following:

1. HBO programs and movies

2. Network shows (Lost, etc)

3. Other cable shows (Mythbusters, etc)

Is possible to record any or all of these? Does each station (HGTV, etc.) have their own prohibitions?

Thanks very much. I've heard every explanation under the sun and they all conflict.

You're not interested in a Directv DVR? If you can find one, I have the Directv with TIVO HR10-250 which I really like.
Directv has it's own DVR's without TIVO.
My brother has a Panasonic DVD recorder and it sounds like it does what you want to do. He uses it on cable.

Are you able to record premium channels (HBO, Showtime, etc) with the Directv DVR? I've heard so many conflicting stories. Do you know if your brother is able to record premium channels with his setup?

DVD recorders and DVD Burners both create DVDs buy "burning" via a laser to a blank DVD disk. However, A DVD recorder typically refers to a standalone unit that resembles and functions very much like a VCR. All DVD recorders can record from any analog video source (most can also record video from digital camcorders via firewire). Like a VCR, DVD recorders all have AV inputs as well as onboard TV tuner for recording TV shows. DVD Recorders come in several configurations: Standalone, DVD Recorder/VCR Combo, or DVD Recorder/Hard Drive combo units. Might work then you have a pc without a burner, sound like the laser in the DVD recorder mey be bad that's what recognizes the disks

This thread brings up a problem which I have ran into, so please forgive me if it looks like I am hi-jacking this thread, as that is not my intent. I bought a dvd/vhs recorder/player around Thanksgiving and used it to transfer home vhs video tapes to dvd+rw discs. The discs will play on my pc using various video programs. All went well until I tried to transfer the disc contents to my pc hard drive so that I could edit them. My pc has a 2 gig processor, 512 megs of ram, Win xp home with sp2 and a 160 gig HD with plenty of unused space. I downloaded a program called dvd shrink 3.2 hoping it would allow me to transfer the disc to HD. It was a no go as I keep getting various error messages. Does anyone know how to transfer files from a dvd disc to a pc hard drive? I'm baffled. Thanks in sdvance for any help.

If you are skillful with your PC, there are several cards out there that will turn your PC into a viable DVR. Your biggest problem may be having a large enough hard drive. One manufacturer that comes to mind is ATI. They have one video card that performs hardware compression of the video before putting it on the hard drive.

First off let me say that I prefer Mini DV camcorders to the direct to DVD type. If you plan on editing you video then a Mini-dv will end up giving you a better quality result because it will stay uncompressed until you are done and ready to author the DVD. In the DVD camcorders you get MPEG compressed video on the disc so any editing will uncompress and then recompress resulting in lower quality. To answer your questions: 1. The mini dvd's are either DVD-R or DVD+R discs these differ not in the content on the disc from normal DVD's but in the actual disc itself. The recordable disc's both mini and full size use a color changing dye to record the bits of data while a normal dvd is a pressed layer. Most newer DVD players and DVD-ROM drives in PC's will read either format with no problems. However you can go to Video Help.com and look up your DVD Players, others have put in feedback about what type's of disc your player works with. 2. The CCD is the electronic device that actually converts the incoming light signal to the electronic format, the number value attached is typically a resolution number, the higher the resolution (pixel count) of the CCD the higher quality the captured visual information can look. There are higher end models that employ three CCD's to give an even higher resolution image. 3. Both digital camcorders (a sony and a panasonic) I have owned had this feature, its name varies by manufacuterer. 4. Nope no adapter is typically required. If you look closely at the tray there is normally an indention to hold the smaller disc's, this has been a standard back to the mini CD. 5. Sound sync issue you experienced is likely due to the way you captured the video/audio. You dont say much about it so I can only speculate. In any case the MiniDV and the DVD camcorders should not have this issue is setup properly. You can also go the videohelp website for tips on how to capture analog video and convert if you are still interested in that for you old tapes. 6. Dont know check the manufacturers specs for their camera. Are you certain that the Panasonic was mini VHC (VHS-C)?? If its miniDV then I think you need to reconsider a new camera and look at how you edited and converted the video to DVD, it should not have the problems you described. blue: I also have a Panasonic DVD Recorder, a combo unit with a VCR. You can record basically anything EXCEPT commercial videotapes, most often they are copy-protected. Likewise, you usually cannot make a copy of a commercial DVD to a VHS tape. However, you can record whatever signal comes into the unit (cable for instance) on either format. The tricky part is the format of the disks: +R, -R, etc. Difference machines take different formats, the Panasonic takes several, the different formats have somewhat different procedures. I've posted on this topic in the past, you might try a search.

Hey Steve,

Thanks for the reply, and the reminder about formats. I'm also looking at a Panasonic combo unit. What concerns me is that some people say I cannot record premium channels with Directv- and some say I can. I've also heard that some stations like TLC or HGTV also cannot be recorded off Directv.

If I can't record the premium channels, I'll probably hold off on the dvd recorder for now as my vcr works fine. But it's perplexing when everyone has a different answer.

I appreciate the feedback.

I want to hook one VCR/DVD recorder/Player to another VCR/DVD recorder/player and then to my TV, so that i can record cartoons from DVD to VCR for my grandbabies who only have VCR in their room, and as you know you can not record from the same DVD that is in the unit your trying to record too, so im tryin to figure out a way around it without buying a bunch more parts to do it, the s video cables are out of the question,i dont like the pic they put out, but i have loads of RC cables to use, just need to know how to hook it all up and make it work, thanks ASAP!

I've had a couple of Directv with TIVO receivers over the last 5 or 6 years, and there hasn't been anything I could not record, including HBO/Showtime nd PPV channels.
I follow several satellite TV forums and I've seen nothing about the newer Directv DVRs without TIVO not being able to record everything.
In fact, when one of the premium channels has a free weekend, I record a lot of movies.

Thanks for the additional feedback. Sounds like Directv DVRs would be great- but it raises another question: Does the Directv DVR record to disc, or does it just stay on its hard drive?

I'm looking for something that will record to disc- so I can play them on a laptop. Maybe I'll have to re-check the Panasonic DVR.

I just got DirecTV. They gave me a DVR, but I have 3 rooms hooked up. I want to continue use my Panasonic Showstopper DVR but it doesn't recognize the DirecTV signals. Anyone know how to make this work? or am I just out of luck?
