City shut water off for part of town
Comments (17)Thats the only good thing about life in ND Phyllis, good friends and neighbors are always willing to help! Now if one of mine would come and get my heat going I'd be extremely happy! No heat cause somedarnthing on the boiler quit. Its 65 degrees in here and I am cold. We have electric heaters that will warm things up as long as we have electricity. (but we do have a car wash that needs to be heated in this weather and lots of plumbing in the business, we are all in the same building) Everything is iced over here and power lines are down in several directions. Limbs breaking off trees too cause they are encased in ice. I saw Fargo on the national news and heck it was clear there! Not raining or snowing! How do they rate? Comments (6)Actually, after futher review of what happened, it was maintenance that possibly (kinda sorta) contributed to the water leak. The day before the leak, I was doing maintenance on my washer and dryer. I was cleaning the lint from the dryer vent. Also, I was cleaning out the washer tub. I think I must have moved the utility sink a bit and caused the pex supply line that goes to the sink to move a bit, maybe causing it to loosen and then the heat and water pressure built up and popped the hot water supply line out of the bottom of the faucet connection. Either that or the rubber o-ring just gave out from the heat and water pressure. So, I changed both lines to the steel braided type that I have on my washing machine supply lines. This should hopefully prevent any further issues. And, yes, live wire oak, although you seem to assume I do not do maintenance around my house, I do indeed regularly perform maintenance around my house, to include: flushing the water heater twice a year, cleaning the dryer vent, cleaning the gutters, cleaning and servicing my water softener, changing the carbon and sediment filters for my well water, prepping and staining my deck, lawn/landscaping maintenace, maintenance of lawn equipment (riding mower, trimmer, blower), maintaining and cleaning of pellet stove, maintenance on two automobiles....etc...etc...etc... I guess I have to add inspecting supply lines to that list. And, yes, brickeye, I could not agree with you more. Maintenance is less work than paranoia......that is why I try to do as much as I can around my house to avoid the catastrophes..... thanks. mm...See Morevacationing should I shut off water at the street?
Comments (5)I would shut water off but leave hvac set a 55 or higher to prevent pipes freezing unless house is winterized. Be sure to turn water heater to pilot to prevent boiling tank dry. When you return from vacation, expect some facuet drips and inspect water heater drain to make sure it isn't leaking....See MoreSink shut off valve sprays water when trying to shut off water
Comments (8)The seals in shut off valves, at least older models, have a tendency to deteriorate over time just sitting there as they are used infrequently and the packing/seals can deform or go bad. The simplest fix for this is to shut off your main water valve, open a couple of taps that are at low points in the system to drain it, and remove and replace the valve with a new one. The newer models that have a quarter turn to shut off or to open typically have a nylon ball as a valve and you should not end up with this problem in the future if you do the replacement. Trust me, it should be a lot easier to put in a new valve than to try to repair the old one. It's usually a quick job as long as the old valve isn't rusted onto the piping. If you don't have some experience doing plumbing repair, it would be best to get a knowledgeable friend to help or pay a plumber as there are different size connections on these valves, and the connection to the piping can be screw-on or compression, or (less often) soldered on....See Morerwiegand
