Switch to turn OFF a circuit at dark?

What keyword(s) to search for a switch to turn OFF a circuit at dark?

Spouse wants to turn off a 12volt 2amp circuit at or near darkness and turn it back on the next day.

We're having trouble finding this. Seems simple. Must be a keyword search problem.

Is this for a lawn sprinkler, etc .. ?

Would the Timer motor be powered by 12v (DC) ?
or from the 120v wall outlet ?

There are some 120v wall timers ...
electronic (programable) ON or OFF at dusk for about $ 25 ...

need to program which mode you want ..
ON at dusk OFF at dawn
ON at dusk and OFF a certain number of hours later
OFF at dusk ON at dawn
OFF at dusk and ON a certain number of hours later

etc...

Oops. I failed to note it is a 12volt 2amp DC circuit.

It is located out in the desert so whatever turns the circuit on and off must be a solar normally closed switch or a battery.

Do you know where it goes? Is it possible that this used to be a three way switch but the other switch was removed at some point? If the second black wire has power when the switch is "off" (I'm assuming you mean 'down' since a 3-way switch isn't on/off ... it's up/down), but nothing turned on when you flicked it "off", then I'd say it's safe to just cap that black wire and push it to the back of the box. It isn't being used for anything anymore.

A) You made the classic mistake of not marking where each wire went, and disconnected everything. Am I correct? In a situation like this there is NO reason to disconnect every wire and open splices! ONLY disconnect wires related to the light itself. B) For the most part you made up for this by posting all the wires in each box related to the problem. OK, for the grounds you splice ALL grounds in the box together and make sure one of the is ALSO connected to the box (if it is metal). If there is a ground screw on the crossbar you connect to that too. Try to connect the light: - White from the fixture to all the whites in the box. - Black from the fixture to the RED in the box. - Splice all the blacks in the box and cap them off safely.

I'm betting the new switches are not physically the same as the old ones. On 3b make sure the Black wire from the 2-conductor cable is connected to the Common terminal of the 3-way switch. The replacement and original may not be physically identical though they may be electrically equivalent. On 3a, same thing - make sure the black wire is connected to the Common terminal. It should be marked "Comm" or the screw will be a different color. Remove the 4-way and wire nut the wires together, red to red and white to white. This will enable you to get the circuit working with just the 3-way switches. Once that is done you can work on re-installing the 4-way correctly by following the wiring diagram that comes with it. BE CAREFUL - you do not show the complete circuit diagram and I am making assumptions on what the wires are based on limited information. Double check that the wires truly are connected as shown.

A google search indicates that there are three-way timer switches. Some require a neutral, so they may not work, but if you check with an electrical supplier they might have something. BTW, they're three-way switches, not three pole. Also, the middle switch in the circuit would be a four-way. You might want to read up on how a multi-switch hook-up is constructed. I wouldn't bother asking at big blue or big orange.

OK, we're getting closer ...

possibly you have a solar panel w/battery ...

and you want to turn an external circuit ON during the day ?

or to just disconnect the solar panel from the battery at night ?

I use such a circuit for controlling an alarm system on a disconnected tool shed using Solar Cells. You can use any type of a relay to power or remove power from any circuit depending on the current capabilities of the relay. BTW, I built my circuit from schematics I got Online. It basically is a light sensor feeding a transitor switch to turn ON or OFF a relay. It has an adjustment control to set the threshold bias on the transistor for the crossover point of light and dark. Has been working for over 10 years with the Solar Cells charging batteries that feed the circuits for the alarm system.
