Landscapers forgot to kill bermuda before tilling it - What now?

This is a very long and convoluted story but I'll try to be brief.

We hired some people to tear out our bermuda grass lawn and xeriscape it. Unfortunately, they forgot or they neglected (can't get their story straight at this point) to spray the lawn with glyphosate (Roundup) before they tilled the whole thing. The result is that now you can see the roots distributed all over the yard. So my questions are...

Question 1: What do we do now to get rid of this bermuda grass? I'm afraid that the only option is to wait for it to grow back, then spray! I've read about solarization, but it's now October in SoCal and I'm afraid it won't be hot/sunny enough to kill anything.

Question 2: There is a lot of he-said she-said back and forth going on with this company. The consultant who originally came out to look at our yard 2 weeks ago is no longer working for them. He wrote up a proposal but they tell me that he never discussed the details of what we wanted fully. What's written on the contract is a "removal of hardscape and plant material on the lower level." He told us he would spray and then dig the grass when it was dead.

When the project was passed on to the new guy, he first told me that they forgot to spray. But then I find out he was planning to put down landscaping fabric, which, in his own words, they only use when they don't spray.

Now I don't know what to believe, but I do know that the old lawn already had landscaping fabric put down and that didn't stop the bermuda grass. I've seen them pull large swaths of the fabric out of the ground still intact and, I think, 5-6 years old. It obviously doesn't work.

I'm not sure they're willing to work with me on this if they're already backsliding about what they were planning to do. Does this sound sketchy to you? Should I fire them or allow them to make good at this point?

Why would you want them to use Roundup? It's a very toxic pesticide and will affect/kill any planting that you put in that space (not to mention the impact to your health).

The landscape fabric will work... to some degree. But you are right - it is not perfect. You will still have some weeding maintenance to do. I don't think there is a fool-proof option to weed control.

I've used cardboard in the past to smother the weeds. It works well - but the grass does eventually bust through. I've also used the felt landscape fabric and it worked really well. Perhaps you could have them put several layers of the thicker felt weed fabric down?

No political agenda at all in that link or your post. No misinformation there at all.

Lamb - I would at least give them the opportunity to present their plan going forward to address the issue. Get it in writing, with measures for bermuda control. If it doesn't sound like they will do an adequate job, look for someone else.

I think getting rid of the grass is the worst part of starting a new garden area, and since we like to add on every year we always have to deal with your problem. Hopefully this year will be easier for us though since we will be getting a tiller for our tractor and I figure we will be able to till it a lot more since it will be faster that doing it with a regular tiller. Anyhow I wish I could offer you more advice, but the only thing that I could suggest that works for us is if you do like grandad mentioned and them rake the clumps in your walkway and the good dirt where you will be planting. I am converting from fescue/common bermuda to Patriot bermuda this summer. The common is taking over my lawn and I want a nice bermuda if I am going to have it. A PhD turfgrass extension/research specialist did bring up a very important point to consider. He suggested that I till to a depth of 4' to 6' and here is why. He stated that RU will kill the top portion of the plant but not the rhizomes underneath the ground that are laying dormant. By tilling, it brings the rhizomes to the surface. Upon doing this he suggested to wait 2-3 weeks after tilling. When/if the rhizomes begin to generate new shoots hit it again with another blast of RU or equivalent. One thing he stressed, and others on this board have too. Hit the bermuda with a shot of nitrogen 2 weeks prior to applying RU to really get it growing. When you apply the RU hit it with Roundup Pro or generic equivalent and the full 4 quart per acre rate. He stated that if you merely make it sick it will not take in any more RU, unlike other herbicides. When the rhizomes begin to grow shoots hit it with the 3% solution of the 4 lb per gallon RU. He stated that he once was unable to till on his property due to erosion issues and fought killing the rhizomes with RU for a long time since he was unable to till. To be sure, I DO NOT want to till. But, given the tendencies I have experienced with my lawn, I am considering it. I once thought my neighbors bermuda was encroaching on my lawn, which it is in some areas. However, base on his information, I now think that some of the once-dormant rhizomes are a big reason why I now have widespread bermuda showing up and choking out my fescue. I have only lived here a year and can only speculate what the previous owner did. But, both of my neighbors have the same bermuda that I have and am left wondering if my lawn was at one time the same. I do not want to till for other reasons too. But, if I have a choice to till and fight leveling or not till and fight this darn common bermuda I think I would choose to deal with leveling. This is just my opinion but I really want to do all that I can to get minimize it. He did state that if the bermuda was not that widespread in my lawn then he would not see a need to till as he does recognize that there is a great deal of extra work involved. Given this, I guess each person has to make his own determination of what might be right given their own individual circumstances. That's what I am fighting with now.

It's a long shot. It's highly unlikely that rye would starve bermuda of water or nutrients to the point of death. The reason it's brown is because it requires high nitrogen fertilizer like turfbuilder or lesco 39-0-0 every 30 days approximately. It also requires frequent mowing once fertilized to prevent scalping which will turn it brown. The sod farmers want you to know that bermuda is drought tolerant. And this is true. It tolerates drought. But that doesn't mean it will be green during a drought. It means it will grow back when the rain returns. In fact you can spray your lawn with roundup 7 times and have it dormant or without leaves for nearly a year and it will still come back. IF you've done all of this then perhaps you had too much cold weather for the type of bermuda that you planted and it died from that. Also unlikely in tenn.

Agree. I'm 99.9999999999% sure you have Tif 419. It is the most affordable turf in the industry and is used by contractors and landscapers all over the South. I'd change the watering to 10 minutes. About all you have to do is keep the top inch cool - not saturated by any means. Once the sod has knit into the soil below, you're off to the races. Don't judge anything until you have that accomplished, you start backing way off on water, and get some fertilizer down. Eventually you'll be watering about an inch all at one time. Measure that with cat food or tuna cans to find out how long it takes your sprinkler system to put out that much water. Some do it in 20 minutes and some take 8 hours. You need to know that. In the cool months you'll only need to water once a month. In the warm months you'll be watering weekly. Drop your mower one notch every week and mow it every other day. After a week drop it one more notch. You will scalp just a little off each time. Bermuda grows blades out from stems. When you mow down below the stems, it looks scalped. But it IS bermuda. It comes right back. By the time you get to the bottom notch, it will have cooled off enough that the lowest setting is the one to keep. If you want it to look much nicer, get a reel type mower and set that down to 1/2 inch. At that point it no longer grows stemmy. It takes on a completely different growth habit called prostrate. At that point it becomes the coolest carpet of grass ever. Picture a putting green. I would wait to fertilize with chemicals until you have the grass mowed down all the way. Why? No real reason other than to give it that extra time to knit into the soil. In the mean time you can use organic fertilizer. Which ever one you choose, start at about 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Then in a month you can up that to 20 pounds and then up to 30 or more if you like and can afford it. Bermuda can take 50 pounds per month if you can do that. Most people opt for chemical fertilizers to simplify the fertilizing.

I am not completely thrilled with the idea of using Roundup, but there is no other practical way of getting rid of the old lawn at this point. We don't have to worry about killing any other plants because our yard now is a giant dirt plot (albeit covered in bermuda roots.)

The landscape fabric that was installed previously was a very thick felt and all it did is make the weeding harder. The bermuda root grew in a thick thatch underneath the fabric and you couldn't shovel it out without pulling the fabric up. The roots go several feet deep so even in the best circumstances pulling it is not a productive option.

It is not really about weed control at this point. We want to kill this grass and mulch the yard. I don't want them to install the new plants now in case the bermuda comes up around them, which means we'd either have to shield the plants with plastic and risk killing them when we spray more herbicide, or temporarily transplant them out while we kill the grass.

As far as the landscaping company goes, we are waiting a few weeks to see how much of it we can get to grow back so we can spray it. The lawn has been flooded with liquid fertilizer and gets watered regularly, but so far there have only been a few green bits here and there. I really don't know how long we'll have to wait to see the majority start greening up again. I'm tempted to hire another company to consult.

Nothing will hardly kill Bermuda, so you have a tough problem here.

I've put Roundup on it, and it kills the top, but the deep roots and runners survive, and it re-sprouts. It may take several repeat applications to kill it. And if it comes up even in one spot, it will begin to spread like an alien monster. You will need to be vigilant.

Landscape fabric, IMHO, will just give it a cover to run around under, until the runners find holes in the fabric, or the edges of it, and then it'll come up in those spots. Of course you can't pull the roots out effectively when you see it pop up. They will lurk menacingly under there, waiting for you to turn your back and toss that green sprig into the trash, and then they'll commence to put up a replacement.

Based on my own experience, I'm not overstating. This stuff is bad.

PS Roundup degrades quickly after it's used, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. I limit my use of synthetic pesticides, but Bermuda is one of the things worthy of getting out the big guns.
