osteoporosis ??
Comments (15)Littlebit, did you have a heel or finger scan? My endo says those are essentially worthless, my ob/gyn had put in the finger type equipment for measuring bone density and she was just 'shakin her head, mystified as to why. I wouldn't put much into results you were given if you had other than a Dexa scan. Then a second 12-18 months later so they can compare and see if you are one who just has less dense bones (as you may if Caucasian, small framed, female) or if you are actually losing. Don't panic yet ;) My own doctor not only wanted to begin with the 2 to compare, she wanted them done by the same tech and the same equipment for most accurate comparisons, she doesn't medicate casually....See Moremedication for osteoporosis - results
Comments (7)I always kind of wonder why some people see improvement with this medication and some don't. I think I did walk more last year than I ever have as an amputee. Just better prosthetics in recent years and since. that happened I've gotten to the point that I can just walk a lot farther. I also played tennis quite a bit this past year which I really hadn't done much since becoming an amputee. So I wonder if this activity makes a difference. I also drink a lot of milk and really try to get most of my calcium from milk rather than supplements. Not sure if that matters but I don't believe any supplement is as good as the real thing - just my opinion....See MoreOsteoporosis
Comments (26)As of yet I have no signs of bone density loss. I am 60. I have never ever been a milk drinker since I was into my 3rd year. I am a not a great dairy eater except for cheese and cream which I eat in moderation. I do not take any vitamins or supplements. I did take natal and prenatal vitamins as prescribed by my doctor during my childbearing years. I think simple genetics plays a role. I also believe that women who over diet into staying thin can add to the later thinning of their bones. I credit my healthy (thus far) bones to genetics, exercise and a bit of extra padding in my middle years and presently. With all the controversy over supplements and medications I choose to take nothing unless it is something that would actually be life-saving 0r proven to treat a certain condition. I take my thyroid meds religiously for example. if I had high blood pressure I would take my meds for that. High cholesterol? I o would really have to think about it. Too many pros and cons so that would have to be a carefully informed decision. I think we need to concentrate on healthy balanced diets, a weight based on health and not vanity, and exercise and balance throughout out lives. I lost balance due to hearing loss so I concentrate on that area. It's not as good as it was but I must say it is much better than a lot of my younger friends. Except in extreme cases most breaks in elderly are due to falls. Working on balance can prevent those falls or at least lessen the chance of them. I am sure that in some people there is drug therapy to delay the advancement of Osteo. But like Glenda said exercise, weight training etc. play a role too. I believe a greater one. And for every prescribed drug that has controversial side effects or no effects there are so called perfectly "natural" OTC supplements that have the same downsides and can even be more harmful. So if one is taking advice of thier local "nutritionist" at the health food store or Vitamin Store they should do some heavy research on the real science behind these drugs....See MoreWhat helped your sleep? mattress, foods, supplements, exercise?
Comments (42)While looking at the above government link, I notice San Jose, CA, has high sodium (Na) in their tap. My sister there has high blood pressure, while my blood pressure is low. But my risk of heart attack is higher than her, see below excerpt from WebMD "Higher doses of calcium increase the chance of having serious side effects. Some recent research also suggests that doses over the recommended daily requirement of 1000-1300 mg daily for most adults might increase the chance of heart attack. " http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-781-CALCIUM.aspx?activeIngredientId=781&activeIngredientName=CALCIUM Also see http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/256791.php "The finding came from a new study by a team of experts led by Qian Xiao, from the National Institutes of Health, and supports prior research from last year which indicated that calcium supplements are linked to a higher risk of heart attack." UPDATE: Bought 3 different brands of cherry juice to see if they help with sleep. Trader's Joe cherry juice is too sour & bitter. Indian Summer cherry juice is too watery. Neither of these help with my sleep. The cherry juice that helped was one from nearby Wisconsin (1 hour away) ... its FRESHNESS was what worked. In my experience, FRESH grapefruit works better than STALE cherry juice that was cooked (pasteurized), which destroyed the enzymes. Here's an excerpt from below link: http://bembu.com/foods-to-help-you-sleep 2. Grapefruit Eating grapefruit before bed has been an old wives’ tale for years, but as it turns out there’s a reason why this has been known to help sleep. It contains lycopene, an antioxidant in the body that has been shown to improve the way you sleep. Grapefruit can also help you lose weight if needed." I also notice that fish oil is very effective for good sleep. I took NOW fish oil, since it's the cheapest & best rated on Amazon, only 14 cents. I'm switching to NOW liquid fish oil, lemon flavor, since I get more Omega-3 per price-unit. Fish oil works when magnesium and cherry juice failed. There's days that I could not sleep, and fish oil did the job when nothing worked. I'm going to try cod-liver oil, to see if that helps with sleep & better skin & my vitamin D deficiency. Will report the result later. Both vitamin A and D is known to help with hormonal imbalance....See Morecooperbailey
