Surprise from sunny Florida...

Michigan's weather is notoriously fickle, last week it was in the 60s with thunderstorms, tornados and flooding. This week it looks like this:

Anyway, as I was walking home from work admiring the snow, I found a box on my front porch. From Florida, it was an unfamiliar address, no name. I know I didn't order anything, but I dragged it inside. It was a surprise from Donna (lacksboys3)!!

I don't know how she knew that Michigan was cold, gray and snowy, but she packed up some Florida sunshine and sent it to me, in the form of oranges, tangerines, some orange blossom honey, key lime juice, a couple of "orange" balls for Bud and Makayla, orange bubble gum (which Ashley promptly appropriated, LOL) and chocolate gators.

She also sent me some of her favorite recipes for key lime pie and for honey granola, yummy. I love granola with yogurt over fresh fruit.

Amazingly, all the fruit got here intact and unharmed. One orange was a little "soft" on the stem end, so what could I do? I had to eat it promptly, before it spoiled, so I did.

Oh yes, it was as good as it looks, juicy, sweet, very "orange-y" and not at all like the pitiful styrofoam imposters we get here in Michigan that passes for oranges.

Thank you, Donna, so much. I'm going to take the chocolate gators and the balls to the Monkey Princess and Bruvver tomorrow, and I'll share some of the oranges too, but I'm keeping a couple, just for me.

Now, I'm off to remove my name from the HoneyBell white elephant thread. Since I got my citrus, someone else should be as lucky!

Hey Guys, I was at Lowes today and they moved the rack of misguided amaryllis to the back! I stole pollen...is that illegal?? Anyway, they had 2 of these Deep Red blooms winding out of boxes, their back petals were white splashed with greed mid ribs, but center flowers were deep red to like red/black throats. They were so stressed, poor babies. They were in Red Lion boxes, but next to the other pathetic orangey/red Lions, they were definately NOT RLs...so ok I stole pollen!! lol Wonder what they are...I was on another mission so I didn't barter or try to get an Ami deal, I just stole pollen!

Keith, Thanks! The spanish moss looks good, but I think it's freeze dried. Even the moss in my garage did not pull through (probably from the lack of moisture), but it was alive well into February so it was very close to the light at the end of the tunnel. I'll definitely be replacing it all in the spring. I've noticed that Chamerops pups show more cold tolerance than the mother plant, I still have no idea why. haha. My guess is that it's because they are closer to the ground. Thanks Trishmick! Sounds like you had a good time too! I hope you have luck with germinating the seeds you collected. I collected some loquat seeds from Florida 3 years ago and still haven't tried them. For some reason I never get around to starting seeds even when I have them right in front of me haha. I'm hoping one day to drive to Florida instead of taking a plane so I can bring back some nice seeds and plants! Thanks Bradley! I killed 3 pygmy palms indoors in the past so I know how that feels. I have found them to be the hardest palms to grow indoors which is weird considering that they are considered pretty hardy palms. For now on mine will definitely stay in the garage over the winter. Chad: bismarcks, royals, spindles, foxtails, Christmas all do fine in metro Orlando. Even this year which was coldest since 1996, the neighboring rural areas dipped as low as 15f, Orlando recorded an official low of 30. Heat island does a lot here. I have several coconuts growing happily on my tree in my back yard. Granted Coconuts and bottle palms will need protection from frost here in inland Orlando, the species I mentioned above really grow worry free for those within the orlando heat island canopy here.

Yum, I know how hard it is to get good citrus in the north. Though we diid pick up a box of Cara Cara oranges at Costco. 'Spensive, but good. Very nice, Donna.

Annie, we have the same view, lol.

Annie, White Cloud must be closer to the Artic Ocean that I thought. We haven't had any snow here all week. And the temperatures have been pretty mild. Although, that's about to change, as the MI. joke goes.

Donna's citrus gift was a thoughtful gesture, one that ought to warm you right up.

I'm so glad everything got there intact! Cathy, you said it - we squeezed some orange juice from a mix of oranges that we had gotten last week, and it was the sweetest, best OJ I've had ever. Enjoy it all Annie, it's healthy and good for your libido:-) See, I'm thinking of Elery too!

I can't get over the pictures of your front yard - send me some snow, PLEASE! I'll trade ya.

Carol, I saw the Meyer lemons you had received from Jain recently, they looked so good! For some reason, we can't find them here. One of these days, I'm going to taste one.

OK, I confess, the chocolate Gators were meant to be a shameless plug for the Florida Gators football team, which Michigan played in the Capital One Bowl on New Years Day. But since Michigan beat us, I'll just slink away quietly......

Well, as a native Floridian (though I'm not proud of it), I'd say that is a perfectly appropriate gift selection! Gators and citrus are what the state is all about! Well, old people and tourists too, but they'd be hard to pack in a box.

LOL, Donna, I do have a t-shirt that says "If it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?" Maybe I should find it and send it to Bobby!

Sol, I'm only about 40 miles inland from The Lake. We get that stuff called....lemme see.....oh yeah, Lake Effect. (grin) I'm just on the south side of the snow belt, so I get lots of it. It's funny, you're only about 2 hours away, and Elery is about 3 hours away, and neither of you have any snow at all. It isn't really COLD, just below freezing, hovering about 30F, just enough for snow instead of rain.

Then again, you could come and help me build the perfect snowman. I didn't get Nancy's 7 inches of snow, I got about 3, but it IS perfect snowman snow.

I'll give you oranges afterward to keep up your strength...

Beautiful pictures! The oranges look delish! Here in Northern IL we have been having similar weather to you. Thankfully the last round of snow missed us, but there is snow in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Weren't those 60 degree days heavenly though?
