I only get mine at the local hardware store, although I got great little fancy jars on-line to put the salsa in for Amanda's wedding. Readinglady sent me the link and they were actually cheaper than the regular canning jars.

Annie - If it is no trouble, I would appreciate the link. It is nice to live way out in the country like we do but hard to find certain things. Not a lot of stores to go to here and I hate driving over the mountains to go to the "big" city of San Jose. I have to order a lot of things online. And sometimes it turns out to be cheaper considering the cost of gas. LOL

Here you go, Clare. Very fancy little bottles, the price includes lids. They aren't the two piece lids, they are a one piece lid but safe for canning. Not reusable, though.

I know what you mean about living out in the country, and sometimes it IS inconvenient to drive about trying to find a specific item but I wouldn't live closer to a big city for anything in the world.

Clare, I usually buy from Ace Hardware too. When they're out of season for the local stores carrying them you can still order them online to be delivered to your local store. I've done that with lots of stuff. As the link will show, you can't buy directly online, but you can get them shipped for free to your local store. Hth's.

I also buy from our Agway/feed store. Usually cheaper.

Not to hi-jack the thread at all.....but what glorious kitcheny item did you get for Christmas??

To be honest, most of mine have come from yard sales!?! Made a HUGE find of wide-mouth jars... "tall" quarts... not something I usually see around. Price was dirt cheap... cleaning out a house. Had a bunch of things I didn't really want, but hadda take it ALL to get the great deal.

Tho I prefer wide-mouth jars, bought a case of pint jars at a yard sale cuz of the lids?!? They looked "old" and had unusual lids. Each jar had a glass disk and ring had a sorta "bow tie" cut out so you could see thru opening. I have NO idea how they would actually seal... pretty sure they need some kinda rubber gasket to create a seal.
If BUYING jars/supplies... W probably has the best prices... even at this time of year.

jasdip - Thanks for asking. I got several items from my list. Oven mitts with the reflective lining, crumpet rings, scale (actually those were for my birthday but close to Christmas), reprint of old Betty Crocker 1951 cookbook, and French tapered rolling pin. Then for a BD present to myself, I bought a new candy, jelly and deep fry thermometer. They had the best one at B,B & B.

klseiverd - I never seem to get to yard sales. Too lazy to get up and out the door early enough to get the best deals. I do search Craigslist and thrift stores on a regular basis for canning supplies. I make a lot of my own pickles, jam and jelly. BTW, I saw that you can buy those rubber gaskets online.

Clare, I also got many of my jars from elderly friends who don't can any more. I take them bread and homemade jam and they are glad their jars found a happy home!

I used to get them at Goodwill and 2nd hand shops but canning has become much more popular the past few yars and someone always beats me to it since I'm at work all day and can only make it to the stores on weekends or evenings.

Walmart is the most expensive place here, I do find jars sometimes at Menard's and Big Lots, usually the Golden Harvest brand at Big Lots and they are always quite a lot cheaper than Walmart is.

Since my local True Value hardware store is just a few blocks from the house and everything else is a minimum of 60 miles round trip, it's a lot cheaper to pay a couple of dollars extra and save the gas, plus the owner is my neighbor, 3 houses down.
