Where do you buy rare plants online?

What are you favorite internet resources for buying plants? I have a long wishlist of plants that ebay seems to fail me on :) Just wondering if you know of any good sellers online. Thanks.

Being in the UK I only have ebay as my main option. There is a site based in Europe called Succulent Tissue Culture. I think they grow succulents from tiny tissue samples and it's all very sciencey!

I love Arid Lands, I am lucky enough to be able to go shop there in person, and they have online shopping available too. Another great place is Miles2go.

The link is a UK site I picked at random to show what I mean never used them. Hi Pngwin21, I too have been looking for on line veg, for the same reasons as you, in the UK we can buy things called plug plants, which are delivered to your home in a sort of gel stuff, I concluded that the reason for the lack of these companies is that a) no market (although thats two of us know so maybe we should start a business! haha) or b) the huge delivery area of the US and this can impact in a couple of ways, one the plugs would take so much time to arrive they are ruined (cannot tell you how long it took me to understand the lack of delivery in 48hr here)and the increased weight would of course mean extra postal charges. c)in the uk you order by November I think it was, so they know the demand and can plant accordingly for the same date troughout the UK thus cutting cost, the US has so many zones this maybe a logistical nightmare, although computers could solve this! or D)they just haven't thought up the idea yet! although I find that unlikely! that said, no t bar on a shovel! and runner beans as a flower! anything is possible! I would as now is the right time, cos I am about to start posting my spare seedling, try Craigs list and join freecycle, you are supposed to collect but if someone explained that they couldn't drive I would make my husband take it round, if at a reasonable distance from our home, offer to pay for gas, also do churches, scout groups that type of thing do plant sales?, look out for them and in the UK I also used to pick up loads of free seedlings at the end of peoples driveways, which they had left out as FREE, people may do that here? I intend to as well as craigs and freecycle. last sugestion, walk the neigbourhood pinpoint who has a garden, introduce yourself and ask about the local conditions, pest ect and then tell them you problem, gardeners seem a pretty generous bunch on the whole and I bet you get a bucket of plants and good advice, I got another Veg patch from a neighbour this way, she can't tend it this year and I just give her a share, fantastic! hope I manage to grow something! I forgot about this thread. Mersi, no, my vanilla orchid never bloomed..I wish. I had two, green and variegated..the var went to plant heaven. I could blame it on the seller, but it was my fault..except I still don't know where I went wrong..lol The green is once again a small plant..It grew huge, over 10'..Somehow, the stems tangled..it was like unraveling Christmas lights that have been tossed in a box w/o organizing. It got a haircut about a year ago. Cuttings never rooted..boohoo. Marcsi, you've never heard of Gardenwatchdog? Wow..It's too bad everyone who grows/buys plants wasn't aware of this site. It's great for two reasons..The first is if someone wants to order from 'x' nursery, they check GWD, and read feedback. The second is, it's a good way finding a nursery. BUT, there is a negative side, too. Over the years I've talked to a few nursery owners. They're very nice people, have to take lots of cr*p when it comes to the public. One woman ordered 2 plants from 'x' nusery. One was a backorder so when she opened the box, found one plant missing, she went balistic. She phoned the owner at midnight, again 4am..she admitted, on GWD, calling his home at midnight. She hesitated mentioning the 4am call though.. To top it off, she left negative feedback. If someone doesn't get exactly what they think they're going to get, instead of contacting the owner they run to GWD, rant and rave what a terrible nursery they ordered from, warn people away. I've ordered from nurseries some complained about and never had any problems. One man ships bare-root plants..it's written in plain English..still some complain the print isn't large enough, or it doesn't offer a good-enough description. The seller even displays pics/sizes of what to expect..lol How much more can anyone do? So, all it takes is one person to get the ball rolling, and others tend to follow. But I do enjoy reading GWD and have found several decent nurseries. Perhaps Logees has improved their stock. If they haven't, the only reason they could be getting positive feedback, and I dread saying this is, people who have been shopping with them for years may feel dedicated, or ppl who just starting buying plants, who never shopped elsewhere, have nothing to compare to, perhaps feel a 3" plant is sufficient, especially if they believe it rare. I feel bad talking down about Logees, but after paying high costs to receive dead or tiny plants, if someone asked where to shop, I c/wouldn't refer them. Toni

Thanks- all good things for us to know when buying an expensive item. It is now ;Cyber Monday'= and I don't see any prices that are different from the last several weeks...maybe Cyber Monday is just a gimmick? I had a horrid experience with buying from Best Buy- in person....first, the salesperson walked away while I was actually asking questions about the computers- I floowed him through several isles to drag him back. He then said 'I'll be back in 3 minutes'....10 minutes later I found him standing up front talking with coworkers. I again ragged him back to the computer area. I bought the HP Mini. I did complain to the mgr, who gave me a $40 off the computor. 4 days later, when I returned the computer because it didn't work, the mgr only refunded $359, not $399...I guess all the crap I went through/got a sales price renigged because the product didn't work, and it was then ok to have such bad salespeople. I won't ever be buying from Best Buy. Now....where are the Cyber Day Sales????? owbist- I think it was you that said I was already ahead $40 online.....where, please?

Clare, I also got many of my jars from elderly friends who don't can any more. I take them bread and homemade jam and they are glad their jars found a happy home! I used to get them at Goodwill and 2nd hand shops but canning has become much more popular the past few yars and someone always beats me to it since I'm at work all day and can only make it to the stores on weekends or evenings. Walmart is the most expensive place here, I do find jars sometimes at Menard's and Big Lots, usually the Golden Harvest brand at Big Lots and they are always quite a lot cheaper than Walmart is. Since my local True Value hardware store is just a few blocks from the house and everything else is a minimum of 60 miles round trip, it's a lot cheaper to pay a couple of dollars extra and save the gas, plus the owner is my neighbor, 3 houses down. Rare as in rare (and expensive)?

I've never ordered from them, but they look to have nice plants at a superior price:

Charris : There are some nicely established plants found on all of your provided links.
If Robin is meaning lower budget rare or not as established rare www.mesagardens.com comes to mind.

Would also like to add a small plug for Steve Hammer who doesn't have an order online page but often does some sales by emailing..

Quite right - I was equating rare with expensive, which is true but can be not true.

Another nursery (for the wee Agaves, and big ones too, as well as bulbs, bulbs, bulbs) is Starr Nursery. He's got a new Agave book which I will get next year (I would have gotten it this year but someone forgot it).

Sweet everybody!! I have bookmarked them all and even managed to knock off two plants on my wishlist at Arid Lands :) Rare Succulents is a dangerous website!! But I am more interested in young rare plants so I will stay away from that website :) And by rare I mean plants that you can't really buy at normal nurseries or Home Depot :)

Ron,

Annette and Linda from the Island know of a few places in Vancouver, but I personally don't know of any others. However, there are a number of Canadian online nurseries that feature alpines, but if you're looking for Ariocarpus or Adromischus I fear you may be out of luck. On the bright side, Kelowna's not that far from the border...

I have ordered plants from the U.S. and had them sent to my family in Walla Walla and then pick them up when we go down there. I did get a few when I was in California last summer. In fact I "borrowed" a piece of Crassula Ovata from along the city sidewalk in Morro Bay.

Ron, Phoenix Perennials might be worth looking at if you're into agaves, yuccas, and sedums. They started doing mail order a year or two ago. The owner is a great guy and I suspect he will increase the selection of agaves over time. I ordered from Plants Delights once before and am tempted to do so again this year, but, of course, it gets expensive when ordering from Canada.

I finally orderd a couple of plants from Jamie at Valley Succulents, who is also great to deal with, but will pick the plants up in Comox in the spring. Finally have (well almost) Aloe plicatilis and Sedum palmeri Jeff! :-)

Another reason for an island visit - Jamie's the gentleman from whom I got my Agave guadalajarana and Cotyledon undulata, from which you got the first cutting and Colleen will get the second.

Jeff, I love it. The Cotyledon and all the plants sent are looking good - everything has good roots except for one of the aeoniums, but that's just a matter of time. I hope the plants that went your way are okay. I wish Jamie had ovatifolia!

They are OK, Linda, but there's not a lot of movement on the plant front (I'm hoping those little Opuntia pads are rooting as we speak). Now I want all Cotyledons, at least all of the funky ones.

Hopefully, everything takes off in the spring. I have the narrow leafed form - I think it's longifolia - but you have that one already, right? Maybe that doesn't classify as funky, but I really like it.
