Pngwin21, I'm curious. Are you wanting to order plants because the particular varieties of plants you are wanting are not available in your area? In our part of the country, plants are readily available in the outdoor gardening sections of the home improvement & department stores, in every plant/landscape nursery, in almost every hardware store, and from the local plant growers. Are these sources not available in your area?.... I have noted that there are on-line sources for plants but I've wondered how much sales volume these places actually have.

What particular vegetables are you looking for? Many sources exist for tomato and pepper plants such as Burpee's, Laurel's Plants, Selected Plants, Gurney's, Harris-Moran, but it is late to place an order because many things are already out of stock. The GardenWeb Bazaar here lists several vendors.

Onion plants and seed potatoes are also running low but check out Dixondale Farms and Ronniger's for them. Local nurseries are your best bet for any other vegetable transplants. I've never seen any online offers for plants that are normally direct seeded in the garden.

they have seedlings and seeds here and I think they still have them. They used to have a store but went straight to online only because they do a lot of business. They do not have a huge list of variety for seedlings but some good ones

Hi Pngwin21, I too have been looking for on line veg, for the same reasons as you, in the UK we can buy things called plug plants, which are delivered to your home in a sort of gel stuff, I concluded that the reason for the lack of these companies is that a) no market (although thats two of us know so maybe we should start a business! haha) or b) the huge delivery area of the US and this can impact in a couple of ways, one the plugs would take so much time to arrive they are ruined (cannot tell you how long it took me to understand the lack of delivery in 48hr here)and the increased weight would of course mean extra postal charges.
c)in the uk you order by November I think it was, so they know the demand and can plant accordingly for the same date troughout the UK thus cutting cost, the US has so many zones this maybe a logistical nightmare, although computers could solve this! or D)they just haven't thought up the idea yet! although I find that unlikely! that said, no t bar on a shovel! and runner beans as a flower! anything is possible!
I would as now is the right time, cos I am about to start posting my spare seedling, try Craigs list and join freecycle, you are supposed to collect but if someone explained that they couldn't drive I would make my husband take it round, if at a reasonable distance from our home, offer to pay for gas, also do churches, scout groups that type of thing do plant sales?, look out for them and in the UK I also used to pick up loads of free seedlings at the end of peoples driveways, which they had left out as FREE, people may do that here? I intend to as well as craigs and freecycle.
last sugestion, walk the neigbourhood pinpoint who has a garden, introduce yourself and ask about the local conditions, pest ect and then tell them you problem, gardeners seem a pretty generous bunch on the whole and I bet you get a bucket of plants and good advice, I got another Veg patch from a neighbour this way, she can't tend it this year and I just give her a share, fantastic! hope I manage to grow something!

From a different viwpoint and supporting local schools...
at least two of our local high schools (FFA I think) starts seedlings & sells plants each spring. If your schools do the same, maybe by contacting them you could put in an order and have it delivered.

I live in Saratoga Springs................ my suggestion for you is to buy at a local store or go to your local BOCES (I would call them, and see if they are selling garden veggie plants).

I have bought locally onions, and cabbage plants. I am trying to buy my "cold" weather veggies locally and use seeds for other plants (carrots and spinach). Good luck to you and happy gardening

Where to buy ANYTHING??? It's called ebay! There are some excellent sellers, and they'll all be gardeners, too. Do watch out, because there are some that won't warranty their plants, and I think it goes without saying, but be careful of where the plants will have to go while in transit to your garden--it may or may not be time to plant out where you live right now, but there are many parts of the country today and in the coming weeks that will be experiencing some extremely cold weather and most veggie plants will not survive the cold in the back of a transport truck or the postman's van (even for 2nd-day "air" or shipping). You may be getting things shipped overnight, but if they're not, it's not likely that they'll take a direct route to from the sellers dock to your door, so be sure to work with a reputable seller that knows his shipments' routes, or wait to take shipment until the weather is warmer.

Also, check the "Get Togethers" forum for trade meets taking place in your neck of the woods. No online ordering needed, just show up (with a big truck to take home all the goodies, if you're like me!!!)

I'm in Brooklyn and also don't drive, and I have found that the "big box" stores have poor selection. I have ordered live plants from the following:

www.heirloomacresseeds.com -- good selection but mostly sold out now

other options:

If you ever come into the city, the union square farmer's market is another option, or you could do a search for CSA in your area and see if any nearby farmers would deliver starts to you.
