How to reheat empanadas in toaster oven?

Hi --

I'm making Empanadas de Picadillo tonight for a work luncheon tomorrow. I should have 2 dozen and can reheat them in a small toaster oven -- which can be set to a specific temperature -- but I've never used a toaster oven before!

I'm thinking of wrapping them in single layers completely enclosed in aluminum foil for the fridge tonight. Then open the foil pkts to reheat in batches in the toaster oven. The recipe says to reheat at 375F for 5-10 mins. Will that work? or can you tell me the best way to reheat them?

My experience in reheating something like that is that the outside burns before the inside is hot. I would re heat inside the foil and remove the foil for the last maybe 5 minutes to crisp the crust.
Will it be a yeast dough or a short crust? If it's a short crust you could use a micro to reheat.

If all you have is a small toaster oven, then you can reheat them best at a lower temperature - not above 300 or 325 degrees, and for more like 20 minutes rather than 5-10. This gives the interior time to heat up. If you have a microwave in addition, you can just start heating them in the MW for a few seconds each (or longer for a batch), and then finish them in the toaster oven to get crisp. If you use only a MW, they will be soggy.

If you reheat them at a higher temperature, you will definitely want to keep them covered for most of the time.

Dianalo, I originally thought of doing that and building shelves/cabs for the TO and MW against the side of the fridge, but that's what my KD warned me against as she felt it would leave very little backsplash visible and the overall look would be cramped. After her sketching it out on the paper plan (a copy of the one I posted above), I see her point... Just doesn't seem like it would be a very attractive solution. But it is hard coming up with alternatives! Also, I use my TO a lot and will keep using it after the kitchen is redone, since my new oven will be 36" and I don't want to crank that big thing up if I can use the TO instead. Hence the need to find space for both TO and MW. Melissastar, I love your solution and wish I could borrow it! Bit I have four kiddos and the youngest are a young toddler and a baby, so a bit too risky. My toddler aleady tries to reach the MW and push buttons whenever he can, so it will need to stay at or above counter height for sure. Maruha, my pic doesn't show this but there is a door on the right hand wall just past the window. If I slide the sink under the window, anyone standing there will be in the way of the door swing, and as the door leads to the play set in our yard it is used pretty frequently. So I put the sink to the left of the window to allow for simultaneous use of doorway + sink. Marcydc, can you show me a pic of your micro drawer? Is it hard to lift out hot dinner plates, for example? I've never seen one in action so have a hard time understanding how it works in everyday usage. That might be a good solution? Are there particular brands, and which one do you have/like? Thanks so much and kee the ideas coming! I love it! Maybe we could find a way to squeeze them in along the side walls perhaps.... We rarely have a need for a microwave, but after doing without for three years I knew I wanted one. We opted for the Bosch speed oven, and use it much more than I thought I would. Use is about 30% speed cooking, 20% microwave, and 50% of the time we use it as a small convection oven. However, the oven that has fully won me over is the steam oven. It is wonderful, and after some glitches with the control board it is working flawlessly (Bosch has been top notch for repair and service). It does everything that a regular microwave does except pop corn. Food reheated in a steam oven doesn't even compare to food reheated in a microwave. I've used all three (speed, steam, full size convection) at the same time on quite a few occasions and love having them all. However, if I had to pick just one of the smaller ones to go with my full size it would be the steam. I'd put a tiny microwave in the pantry for that rare need. Good luck with your new ovens!

So, make a niche(s) with the proper electric service and size to have a built-in put in if you really need it to sell (but I bet you won't)--if you're planning to sell within three years, get the built-ins already, but otherwise, they're going to be just so many used appliances. If yours are truly ratty, you can buy new versions of each. If you WANT a speed oven, and intend to use it as such, that's another story. Go for it! Read through the manuals, etc. But I think you'll find that it's not at all the same thing as your Breville toaster oven. You can use the convection oven settings on a speed oven to perform some of the same functions, but it's a real oven, with limitations, not a toaster that tap dances. I sometimes use my speed oven the way others use a toaster oven--mainly for heating up frozen appetizers or reheating casseroles when other ovens are full, but my old (dead) toaster oven was beloved for making great toast, which a speed oven isn't, and not for other uses. I do zap sandwiches on MW mode, and once in awhile lightly defrost or melt, but if I used a microwave more, I wouldn't have such an expensive machine doing it. I agree with putting enough thought into a remodel that it won't limit resale, because you never know what the future will bring--thus make sure there's place for built-ins to be built into--but unless it's a flip, it should be designed for your own use and enjoyment, and you used the key words "heavily use" and "love".

We have the full size Breville toaster oven bought for the kitchen reno and the Bosch speed oven. I really couldn't live without either now. I guess you could toast bread on broil in the speed oven but that mean you would have to get the rack out and it's just not as convenient or time saving. Having the versatility of both ovens makes me happy. We also have the side opening Bosch oven which is the star of the kitchen regarding how awesome the food comes out of it and ease of use.

yikes! I'd be bummed if they burned while reheating! The crust ingredients are a standard pie crust plus 2 tsp sugar, but I haven't used this dough recipe before.

There is a microwave so I could use the microwave to take the chill off and then move them to the toaster oven to re-crisp them. Can't use aluminum foil in the microwave though, so what's the best way to accommodate the transition? I wish they had a full-size oven!!! :) I don't know if anything larger than a salad plate will fit in the microwave. lol!

I have an electric skillet -- would that work to reheat them?! I will be baking these empanadas, BTW.

Sorry, Lars, I was posting and didn't read your reply yet. Thank you so much for the info -- particularly the timing and temp info! I'll plan to nuke them first and then reheat in the toaster oven to crisp. I can probably get volunteer testers. lol!

The best is to toast them on a rack. Heating top and bottom at the same time.

In a toaster oven, check to see if it is set to "toast". (not bake or broil) The heating elements are balanced to heat both sides evenly.

There is no need to microwave (I think).
