Toaster Ovens, do you have one and what do you make?
Comments (33)I never had any use for a toaster oven until I had no oven. I remembered the little toaster oven from my youth that made burned toast that my grandmother then scraped and buttered anyway. I haven't had a working oven in quite a while. I finally broke down and purchased a countertop oven perhaps the same size as the one Sharon is showing, maybe smaller. It wasn't a high end model, just an Emerson from Target. This Thanksgiving I did a 12 pound unstuffed turkey in it. I didn't think it was possible but it was. Since I carved it and froze the meat and almost everything for that meal I was able to do everything one item at a time. We had Thanksgiving on the sailboat where my son has been living in Long Beach since September. I find that it runs hot and I have to adjust the temperature dial down about 25 degrees. Also deep loaf pan quick breads will tend to burn on the bottom before they are baked through. So I divide the recipe into three mini loaf pans instead or use a small bundt pan. Glass also tends to lead to burned bottoms on my quick breads. We make lots of cookies, one-loaf quick bread recipes, pies and crisps and small bundt cakes. I haven't attempted yeast bread yet but I will at some point. I've baked pumpkin halves, and stuffing, and sweet potatoes. As long as the baking dish fits, I think almost anything can be baked in it. I don't use the mini cookie sheets one can purchase for toaster ovens, they are so small they are silly. Mine has a removeable bottom liner so I use that with parchment. It slides into the rack slot. Works fine....See MoreDo you use a toaster oven much?
Comments (22)I use mine all the time. The main reason I like to use it is that it uses much less energy than the big oven. We all need to do our part, so I urge those of you who rarely use your toaster ovens or only use them for toasting to consider using the little oven more often. I happen to love mine, anyway -- it does heat very quickly and bakes and toasts great. No bending, either! And I can unplug it when I'm not using it -- can't do that with the big oven. I was shocked to see how much energy gets "leached" by plugged-in appliances even when they aren't turned on. I thought that was only true of the ones with clocks, lights, etc., but apparently not. So I turned off the clock feature on all the appliances that will let me do that (there are plenty of clocks already in view in my kitchen) and I unplug the toaster oven, blender, food processor, computer, phone and Ipod chargers, etc., when I'm not using them; only the coffee pot (because of the set-ahead timer) and the microwave (because the outlet is hard to reach, right behind it) stay plugged in on the counters. It only took a day to get used to it. You can also put all the appliances on power strips or "smart strips" and just flip the switch on when you want to use one. The chargers are particularly bad "vampires" -- up to 95% waste if you leave them plugged in all the time. http://creativecitizen.com/solutions/36-Unplug-your-chargers-appliances-when-not-in-use http://www.terrapass.com/blog/posts/energy-tip-10-remove-wall-warts-and-slay-electricity-vampir http://www1.eere.energy.gov/consumer/tips/home_office.html...See MoreWhere do I fit a toaster oven?
Comments (11)@rhome410, it might be possible. That's what I was thinking originally. I wanted something a little different than the rest of the cabinets, maybe some base cabinets with a stainless steel top and then some upper open shelves. And possibly shallower than typical cabinets. But my husband thinks it will be too crowded. I think the problem is that on the opposite side of the wall with the art, is the door out to the deck. So, we can't crowd the table in that direction as people need room to walk. Of course this will all become more evident when we move in this weekend and start using the space! I'm just trying to get ideas now as the quicker I get something in to place, the less time my husband will have to get used to how it is now. :) @natal, thanks for the tip on the Breville and the Cuisinart. I took a look and I think the compact Breville smart oven would be nice. Love the Cuisinart 195 was it? But it's a bit bigger than the Breville and we don't need to do pizzas in it as we've got 2 ovens in the Electrolux for that, so I think going for something smaller would work better....See Moredo you have a Toaster Oven (Breville) in the Cabinet or can you do it?
Comments (31)If the Breville "toaster oven" is like the Wolf Countertop Oven with Convection, I would definitely not put it inside a cabinet, unless that cabinet was designed to withstand the heat. I purposely did not get the Wolf countertop oven for one of my "free" choices after buying SZ/W appliance for our kitchen. These are truly countertop ovens vs toaster. That said, in our pantry wall, I have a pull-out shelf for the coffeemaker, blender and two slice toaster. We do not use the toaster often. The pull-out stays out while toasting and until the toaster is no longer giving off any heat. As above poster commented, it's just adults in our household, and I would not do this with children or teenagers in the house. allison, we’re discussing a Brevllle Toaster Oven, not a single built in oven. You wouldn’t put a toaster oven under a counter! @darbuk, I will gladly accept an apology for the needless scolding. @S L, thank you for clarifying for those that did not understand your original question....See MoreAnnKH
