It is not insulated and can not be placed inside cabinets. It gets very hot. Scorching hot. Non built in microwaves shouldn't be inside cabinets either. Not without a cutoff switch to the outlet that is triggered by the door. It would be a fire hazard.

just a thought but maybe I could put it on top of the cabinet housing the microwave on a heat resistant base.

Now, I have done it on an open shelf, with plenty of ventilation room around it. We did put a metal heat shield on the cabinet bottom above it, just in case.

I installed a full extension pullout shelf in my cabinet for my Breville oven. I pull it out as soon as I start to preheat the oven and don't close it back into the cabinet until it has cooled after use.

My Breville got hot enough, I moved it to a counter spot without an upper cabinet above it. I wouldn’t put it in any sort of enclosed area when in use.

Thanks for your replies I definitely will not put the Breville inside a cabinet. The extension pullout shelf sounds good but I worry that someone else may use it without pulling it out. But I would like to put the Microwave in an enclosed Cabinet with adequate ventilation .

When we remodeled our kitchen we had a cubby built for the microwave, like the pic in The Cook's Kitchen's post above, had an electric outlet installed in the back. That way, when the microwave kicks the bucket, we unplug, toss, and replace. The problem with an enclosed cabinet is that it sounds custom, and your next microwave might not be the same size.

Here’s our setup, now almost 4 years old. Use both appliances constantly, every day. No problem with our encased microwave. There is just enough ventilation space surrounding it. However, I would never put the Breville in an upper shelf like that. It gets much hotter. Don’t forget, the Breville’s door pulls down, whereas the microwave‘s door swings out to the side (out of the way). It would be cumbersome and dangerous to reach over the hot door of the Breville, to remove a heated up dish of food, or even just toast. Plus cleaning it would be most inconvenient.

P.S. Our Breville is 8 years old. We brought it with us from our former home. Its a simple model, no convection, and not large like the units available now. Suits our needs.

OK. Confession time. I do have mine in the cabinet. It is on a roll out pantry shelf. I had the cabinet maker install an electrical outlet in the back of the cabinet. The oven sits on a thick silicone mat. There is good clearance all around it. To use it, we open the pantry cabinet door, roll out the shelf the Breville sits on, and use it for light duty. Toast. Bagels. At most, a pizza. That is it. When finished, we leave the oven door open, and the pantry door open until the oven is cool to the touch. If we actually roast or bake something I pull the oven out and place it on the adjacent countertop. We planned it this way for neatness and space constraints. There are no children in our home. I would definitely not do this in a home with children or even teenagers.

IMO that is just a fire waiting to happen not everyone remembers to leave the door open and I certainly would never put a taoster oven in any cabinet.Too many chances for disaster.

In a previous kitchen I had an under the counter oven. I did not want a wall oven (opened up kitchen to breakfast area). This allowed me to have the oven anywhere I wanted (not under the cooktop - who wants to stand in front of a hot oven!?). A previous Houzz poster researched hiding an oven, and he discovered an insert for ovens that will pass (most) codes. It also requires the doors that hide oven to be open in order for the oven to be turned on. You might try searching Home Decorating Conversation and Kitchens for this info.

This is what we are planning for our microwave, but we are discussing toaster ovens not microwaves.

A toaster oven heating to 350+ degrees used for longer than 5 min periods are too hot to be in a cubby like the above example pics. That is a fire hazard.

I also worry about insurance coverage if a fire were to happen since the appliance is being used AGAINST the manufacturer recommendations. Fires are devastating. Having your fire claim denied is even worse.

mizlizzie- thanks for confessing - That is just what I wanted to do. But this is a vacation house and I can have people coming when I'm not there or not paying attention - so for peace of mind I guess I'll have to keep it out. I may be using it more often as I'll only have one oven.

I only wanted to clarify for others researching toaster oven placement. The photos above are dangerous. <3

Just to be clear, the above photo of the open appliance shelf complies with the oven manufacturers stated clearance requirements. We took the additional not required step of installing a color matching heat shield under the cabinet above. For those not familiar with a heat shield, it’s a formed metal piece much like a large flat U that covers the cabinet bottom. It creates an air gap between it and the cabinets, so that any heat generated by the oven does not transfer to the cabinets above. I think we had to use 22 gauge metal in order to create enough stiffness for the application, but I no longer recall.

This applies to the Breville only according to manufacturer recommendations as stated above. Other toaster ovens may differ. Consult manuals.

The heat shield will prevent heat damage to the cabinets.

The recommended clearance is to ensure nothing is within so many inches of the appliance, because the generated heat will melt or catch something on fire within that vicinity.

The enclosure will trap generated heat and damage the appliance over time (especially electrical components and cord cover) possibly becoming a fire hazard. The insides, the plug also, are meant to be in a well ventilated open space to dissipate heat.

If the Breville "toaster oven" is like the Wolf Countertop Oven with Convection, I would definitely not put it inside a cabinet, unless that cabinet was designed to withstand the heat. I purposely did not get the Wolf countertop oven for one of my "free" choices after buying SZ/W appliance for our kitchen. These are truly countertop ovens vs toaster.

That said, in our pantry wall, I have a pull-out shelf for the coffeemaker, blender and two slice toaster. We do not use the toaster often. The pull-out stays out while toasting and until the toaster is no longer giving off any heat. As above poster commented, it's just adults in our household, and I would not do this with children or teenagers in the house.

I'm sorry @Cavimum if I came across short or rude! I have become super sensitive to fire safety after listening to my friends describe their fire calls. Some stories are terrifying and heartbreaking.

I got my pullout from shelvesthatslide.com It's worked out really well for us, but it sounds like your oven may be heavier than my Breville, so you should check the weight capacity of the shelf.

Baked canned biscuits @ 350°F in my Breville Mini this morn. Remembered this discussion so I placed an instant-read thermometer on top.

Had it sitting on top otherwise exposed for several mins, reached 155°F.

Then I placed a baking pan atop the thermometer to better hold the heat around the probe, reached 190°F.
