Oster Enameled Cast Iron on sale at Target

Target has Oster Enameled Cast Iron on clearance. The 5 qt. dutch oven is $27.98; a two pack of individual mini-casseroles (9.5 oz each) is $13.98; or you can have a 3 qt. bean pot for $20.98. Does anyone know about the quality of Oster cast iron? I had no idea Oster made cast iron.

Good heavens! For $28 how bad can it be!!!!
consider that a similar Le Cruset pot would cost about $250, you can buy a new one e very year!

I know! Shipping is sky high, though. I need to find something else to buy so I can get to $50 and get free shipping.

Thanks for the helpful responses. Just after I posted this, I found that Target pot listed on their website, and was initially over the moon. But of the five Targets within an hour of driving, nary a one has it. And shipping is $14, if I order it from the website... I think I'm going to keep calling and keep looking for it, and maybe ask my local Target store manager if she'd try to get a few in for me. (Some of my friends also want to try that recipe!) athomein1914 (love your screen name -- I'm a historian and study that period!) -- no TJMaxx around, alas, though we do have Marshalls, which I think is the same chain. I'll keep looking there, too. Thanks for the info about cast iron vs. enameled, too. I have heard people complain about the newer Lodge cast iron -- that the inner surface is really rough, so even if you supergrease it, it's difficult to get food to disLodge, so to speak. I am going to order an antique cast-iron skillet on Ebay for scrambled eggs... not so sure about the antique dutch ovens, though. I'll sit tight and keep looking. Thanks, all!

I'll just put in my Le Creuset experience for future searcher/readers. Bought a set 30 years ago; Large Dutch Oven, Small/Med Dutch Oven, Medium soup pan, small soup pan, both with the wooden handles, med and small fry pan. Great stuff, love it and used reliably for many years...fast forward I burnt up the med soup pan (and btw the wooden handles were never a problem since I dont put things in the oven and they stayed fine over the years) making sugar water. The bottom had become a little rough over the years and so could not be salvaged - sent it in and got back one of the new all metal sauce pans. I liked the size and weight and shape and handle of my OLD pan better, plus for a sauce pan this seems to get a ring of hot spot on the bottom (I do cook on higher heat than I should or maybe its my elec stove?) anyway this is heavier, much longer handle, don't like or use it as much just due to the shape/weight issue. Then I do the same thing with the small soup pan. Send it in, replacement comes with the new black phrenolic handle, no big deal but they've changed the shape and size, its narrower at the bottom and taller and weighs more. I liked my old one better. So while I still think Le Creuset is the best enameled cookware, and perhaps just plain the best cookware with the no kidding greatest lifetime guarentee (I put in a letter saying I ruined it and that I'd be happy to buy a discounted replacement), I don't like their revamped shape and style of their soup/saucier pots. I don't know why they just didn't change the handles from wood to the black ovenproof stuff. If I could figure out how to make my old Paypal acct work I think I'd try buying the old style on eBay. (But you never know what people cooked in them and that creeps me out a little:)

mrsmarv - Thanks for your review of the pot. That is what I was looking for in a reply. Someone who had one and had used it so could give an honest critique. I figured, what the heck, and bought the MS enameled cast iron 5 qt. DO. I mainly got it to try out that new "No Knead Bread" recipe and it worked great with that. Next I am going to try an Apricot Chicken recipe in it. I am going to put it through its paces for the next 30 days and if I have any problems I can take it back. And yes, the color sure is ugly. Don't know why they picked that color. I will keep my eyes open for any good deals on the Le Creuset but I am never going to pay full price for it. I just can't justify that kind of expense. The cheaper ones, though maybe not as nice looking, are alright with me if they work as well. I have 30+ year old Revereware copper bottom pots. Not as nice as All Clad, but I can't justify buying really expensive ones to replace them since they still work fine. Though I must admit I have been looking at the Costco set, which have got some good reviews. I have a newly remodeled kitchen and Wolf range so would like some new heavy duty pots and pans. I will also look into Member's Mark triple-ply all clad set since it got a good review from you. Thanks. Clare

Is it part of the handle or is it a knob? If it's a knob just replace it with stainless steel, brass or something. Few days ago I started looking at some sites about enameled cast iron. My interest was piqued by the no knead bread dough that was such a rage a few years ago. Saw a lot of brands discussed at a bunch of places. Kitchenaid got pretty favorable ratings. I guess the Chefmate from Target got a best buy rating from Cooks' Illustrated in a value line. Martha Stewart got very mixed reviews, not unlike her. A lot of people had chipping problems quickly with the 4time felon's namesake. Mario Battalia (sp?) had one that was pleasing a lot of people. One other thing people mentioned doing with phenolic knobbed lids was to wrap the knob in foil to protect it. Not sure if that would work with the spongy stuff though.

It's enamel.....sure lead in the under stuff.....but enamel is like glass......don't worry about it. It's not like pottery with a low fire glaze......this is vitrified stuff.
( but if it chips, toss it!)

My first thought when I read this thread was "Now girls, calm down" then, I clicked on the link and thought, I like that purple pot!
So, for fifty you get free shipping? Not bad at all.

Same, Bumblebeez! Haha. I was thinking, "I really don't need another pot" and then I went "oooh purple!"

But. I really don't need another pot. Target has amazing powers. I walk in to grab cat food and walk out with $150 less in my checking account.

I've been planning to splurge on a good enameled pot so I was excited to see this. But after reading the one review for the smaller pot, it says it's not enameled on the inside. :( Has anybody seen these in real life?

Then I went and checked the reviews for some of the Lodge enameled pots and they complained of the enamel chipping or peeling off.

I sure hate spending big bucks on a le creuset but these don't look like a good alternative.

For enamelware, I adore my Mario Batalli pots which I purchased from Amazon. I also have a Staub pot that a bunch of CF'ers bought a few years ago. I prefer Mario's pots since they are enameled interiors like the Le Creuset's.

I saw Dutch oven and mini casseroles at Target today and didn't like them at close look. By some reason I don't like Oster cookware, enameled or stainless, could be I am just too picky about what I use for cooking.

I have more dutch ovens than anyone needs and I bought them all because I liked the color.
Red for Christmas, Burnt orange for fall, Blue for summer, Light Green for spring, a Pumpkin pot for October, a Green Apple pot for year 'round, a Big Red Apple pot for winter.

I'd like to have a cream colored one eventually as the light green one, a gorgeous spring green, is a Martha Stewart from Macys and it's crap.

But the next one will be a cobalt rooster cocotte. Or maybe a cow...
