Hello :) ... moving out of lurkdom

Hi, I've been lurking for a while, enjoying the exchange of information and recipes so I figured I'd say hey since I may be weighing in once in a while.

I live in Saskatchewan where today its a balmy -46C windchill. The weather may be one of the reasons I like to bake as often as I can manage.

Welcome Pudge from a fellow Canadian. It isn't as cold here on the west coast of Canada but it is snowing.

I think that you will find it is much more fun to participate than lurk.

Sally, Welcome back to the forum. I remember when you posted a while back while y'all were looking for land, I think....unless that was a different Sally from North Texas planning on moveing to northeastern Oklahoma. We moved here from Fort Worth in 1999, and had black gumbo clay there. Here in southern OK we have red clay. George, who posts as MacMex, is a long-time seed saver who also gardens in Talequah and he can tell you everything you need to know about rock removal because he has rocky soil himself. In addition to the OSU Fact Sheets that Seedmama mentioned above, the website of the Tulsa Master Gardeners is a great resource. I've linked it below. For current and historical weather information, you can visit the Oklahoma Mesonet at Okmesonet.org. For climate data specific to your county you can visit the Oklahoma Climatological Society via the mesonet too. We have a lot of gardeners on this forum from northeastern OK and I am sure they will be happy to share with you their knowledge of what grows well in northeastern OK. You will have to get used to having more rainfall in Tahlequah than you had in Texas--but that's not a bad thing! : ) I do not know of an organic equivalent in Oklahoma to the Texas Plant and Soil Lab in Edinburg, Texas, if that is the lab you've been using. Most people here just get their soil tested through the Oklahoma State University Soil Water and Forage Analytical Lab. Scott is one of our blueberry experts and I am sure he can advise you on growing blueberries, as can several others who grow them in NE OK. I can't since I'm in southern OK with a neutral to slightly alkaline soil and water pH. When you select your fruit tree varieties for your orchard, choose your varieties carefully and go for perhaps slightly higher chilling hours than you had in Dallas. The winter weather can be a bit more erratic here and often leads to early blooming followed by later freezes. We experienced similar conditions in Fort Worth, but they're a little worse here. For example, we had prolonged warm spells in January and especially in February that kicked the trees into early bloom and then we had more freezing weather. In one week here in southern OK, we were 91 degrees one day and then a couple of nights later went down to 19. I like to choose fruit trees with no less than 850 chilling hours if possible, and 950 or more is even better. I am sure you're going to love it in Oklahoma. As a native Texas who grew up in a friendly state, I was thrilled to discover that Okies are just as nice as Texans, and perhaps even nicer. I planted one out three weeks ago, but had to cover it twice. I planted another three last weeks and they are fine. I plan on planting the rest out Thursday. Growth wise the three week old is not much bigger than the the one week olds though. I'm not sure I really gained anything by going early, but that was what I was trying to figure out. I agree with painting the window trim. I recently had a similar deal. I had expensive wood blinds on a triple window in my living room that matched the trim stain very well. (I worked hard to get a good match at the time). But then I got the urge to paint all the trim in the room (even the fireplace mantel). I considered leaving the window stained because of the blinds, but in the end I decided the consistency was necessary. I'm glad I did. I don't even mind the wood blinds on the white trim window like I thought I would. And painting all my wood trim definitely updates and freshens the overall look. You could try some trim in a softer white and see if it helps your itch. I like BM Sparkling Wine for a softer than bright but still white. BM Timid White is a bit more white, but still not super bright. Both of these are clean with no undertones of other colors IMO. Am I correct that you don't want to paint your LR walls, just the trim? I think the previous poster is commenting on wall color, but I think your question #2 is still talking about trim???? Here's my paint sampling of trim (and walls) on a recent project. Move vanity out or cut pre-fab marble counter down?

Oh, I was envisioning one of tops that have a molded integral sink. Rather than cutting the top down, I'd space the vanity out from the wall. That way, you can upgrade the vanity later and still be able to use the top. And, a bit more counterspace is always a good thing. You might want to keep an eye on Craigslist, FB Marketplace, etc., Habitat re-stores, etc. for a different vanity. Or used kitchen cabinets to repurpose for a vanity. You can always upgrade that piece later when you find something that will work.

Morning Pudge, welcome to the CF! Can you send some of those cold temps down to Maine. We have been waiting for the temps to get consistently cold enough to make ice for an outdoor skating rink. So far no skating :( You are right though...nothing better than to bake when the cold weather starts. Welcome, NancyLouise

Welcome, Pudge. I too have recently de-lurked and am receiving great advice for good camping food. This is a great, friendly and helpful group of people.

And PS NancyLouise, I drive through Hebron this morning and it was -6Ã¯Â¿Â½F at 7:45 --I'd say that's ice-making weather!

Welcome, Pudge! We're supposed to have a high in the mid 70's F today, which sounds wonderful, but boy, are the plants confused, and we're fighting fleas - in January. It's supposed to be cold. We've been going through all 4 seasons every week for the last several weeks. I think our predicted high for tomorrow is the mid 40's. I envy (just a little) your cold weather for baking. We don't get enough of that here in Texas.

But, back to cooking and baking, I'm looking forward to finding out about what you like to bake and make, no matter what the weather.
