Back-up Generator for the home

Does anyone have a back-up generator for your home in case you lose power? I want to look into getting one but have no idea where to start. Any info or links would be appreciated. Thank you!

I'm aware of two basic types -- Gasoline-powered, and natural gas-powered. In general:

- The gasoline-powered generators are portable, lower power (can't supply power to as many appliances) and are lower cost -- $400-800 or so depending on power. You also need to be able to get gas to run them, so if electricity's out for a long time over a large area, you could run out of luck when you run out of gas. When a prolonged power outage hits, you drag out the generator, fill it with gas, power it up, and plug extension cords into it. In general, they're also noisy and need to be turned off every few hours to cool down.

- The natural gas generators I've seen are designed to be whole-house (or nearly whole-house) replacement power sources that get hooked up to the home's natural gas line and come on automatically near-instantaneously with any power outage. They need to be installed and hooked up by a professional, and home power uses are routed through the generator at the whole-circuit level. Unlike gasoline units, natural gas-powered units are quiet, and are supposed to offer an even enough power supply to operate computers without damaging them. I believe they run around $5,000 installed for a whole-house unit, slightly less for a smaller unit, and slightly more for more powerful ones.

There was some speculation that natural-gas units might improve a home's resale value, but I'm not betting on it, except in the most hurricane-prone areas.

For $5000 you might be able to get a small natural gas generator permanently hooked up to the house, as backup for selected circuits. It won't be a "whole house" generator that powers all circuits in the house, unless it's a very, very small house.

Gas generators are powered by internal-combustion engines that happen to burn natural gas, or propane, rather than gasoline. They're still plenty noisy.

"Also, land with agricultural zoning - tends to be "up for grabs" in that - on farm zoned properties, they can hunt, burn their garbage, turn it into a pig farm, have r00sters that crow all the time, etc. You would NOT want to be next to that!" That's WHY it's zoned agricultural. Chickens crow, pigs squeal and manure smells like s****. Tractors can't go sixty mph and you will get stuck behind them. Believe me, the farmer hates it worse than you do. Our fields also attract deer and raccoons who I guarantee will eat your landscaping in a heartbeat. I prefer to hear my roos crowing at four thirty in the morning than your dirt bikes. Trust me, five acres doesn't soundproof anything. I will hang my wet laundry up on my clothesline during your bar-b-ques too. And cows don't use kitty litter and the you bet we will spread it on the fields when we have to, whether you're having a party or not. And your McMansion blocks my view of the strip mine ponds. This is the other side of the coin from my perspective and although it is meant to be tongue in cheek, it's still true and that's why people like me hang up warning signs on our trees (those not covered in other people's yard sale signs) that anyone who wants to build close should take those things into consideration. I used to suggest to people that you cannot control your scenic panoramas unless you buy the land around you when you build in the country. But, even that doesn't work anymore because governmental programs are enticing industry to move out to the rural areas. When over a thousand acres of farmland is converted to an industrial park, even a mile away, you will never see a black night again, and every breath you take will smell of whatever they are producing. They cut the trees around them one would hope they'll leave as a buffer zone so you can see their miles of macadam and hear the tow motors on still nights. My suggestion is like so many others. Better to build in an already developed area, where you have a better idea of what lies ahead in a couple years.

LOL. Getting back to fuel, I do wonder about diesel. Wonderful engines etc and probably the go-to for commercial power backup but I wonder about the fuel life in terms of standing....it does go off after time, and I suspect the standby maintenance is bigger - and maintenance is something many probably don't factor into costs. I wonder if you can get the special diesel that doesn't include the road tax and is cheaper? The gas equivalent here in Canada is called "purple gas" but don't know if there's a diesel equivalent. If it was legal to do so and you were committed to having the tank topped off regularly, or had two tanks, I suppose you could, theoretically, have a diesel vehicle and use the fuel from tank A) when it was getting old, keeping tank B) full, then swap and use up tank B) - I believe you can have such fuel tested too. Reading the Costco fliers I thought the Natural gas gensets sounded appealing - no dangerous fuel storage, no old fuel to get rid of, but then you are reliant on the outside gas supply. I suppose propane beats this, but how long does IT keep?

petey, after rereading my post i need to clarify a couple things. i don't take your comment as a slam, i think it was the way my post was worded. i hardly have a mini mansion. it is a 30 year old all electric house with 2 HVAC systems. it is not unusual at peak usuage during the summer for me to use 200+KWH a day. last winter i would sometimes even see 300+kwh due to the 2 heaters both having 19.2kw heat srips in them. run both of those at once, and 30kw genny ain't gonna cut it! but with a 30kw i could run one at a time to heat an area of the house, then turn that one off and run the other for a bit. i could run both AC units, but not heat. my post may have sounded like i HAD to have a bigger unit. in truth, if i wanted to run the whole house i would. the unit i have now does just fine, other than if we had an extended outage during the heat of summer i would have to do soemthing else. no way you can stay in an unairconditioned house here during August. i would not even have the genny if it were not given to me. i hardly have the money to buy one, too many other more pressing repairs at home take the money first!

I live adjacent to our local private golf course. Yes, I have golfers in my yard all the time, but not as bad as some of my neighbors down the fairway. How close are you to the teebox? About 150 yards down-fairway from the teebox is a really bad place to be. Especially with a strong wind and/or someone with a wicked slice or hook shot. You really need to find out exactly what your rights are as far as planting on that slope. Some people along our course built TALL fences. We didn't - we want to see down the course. So pretty. And we don't have to mow it. We just resigned ourselves to having golfers in our yard, looking for balls. (At least they get off their carts.) We are golfers, too, and we understand it. Plus, we never have to buy golf balls! The worst experience was when I was sitting quietly in our screened porch, semi-hidden from view from the course, which is probably 35 feet away. A gentleman who had apparently over-endulged in liquid refreshment felt the need to relieve himself behind a tree along the border between me and the course. Unfortunately, he chose MY YARD SIDE on which to do his deed.

One thing to keep in mind when deciding is that none of the above (or anything else) will restore any level of power for more than e.g. 8 hrs, and are meant to be run intermittently, the way you would run the engine of a car for 10 mins. at a time (to save gas for more 'runs') with long breaks in between, to keep heat going when stuck in the middle of nowhere. You're not going to have infinite power back for any function, but at least you get to use the microwave, warm up the baby's room, have more light than a candle, etc. for specific times.

With a continuous source of fuel like natural gas, you can run days at a time, with occasional shutdowns (once a day, maybe) to check the engine oil.
