A few years ago I saw an artist on one of the HGTV shows who did a multi medium decoupage I fell in love with. She gave directions and it looked pretty simple so I gave it a try. It was a lot of fun because it requires a variety of things including paint and stenciling as well as the decoupage. This is the one I did that I have a picture of but I also did one of my niece which in my opinion was much better. I've also provided the link to her website, of course hers are much better looking than mine, but it was still a lot of fun to do.

I loved your neices artwork Lurkish! - and yours! Can you share how you did it? I have a small entry table that I painted black and I bought some decoupage. My plan was to copy some of my mom's letters and adhear them to the table top randomly, but I never got around to it. Now I'm thinking that I could do that as well as paint something in the background, maybe add a copy of an old photo of her and maybe stencil something about mother on top. Thanks for sharing.

Kathy Kromer is an artist in Texas, not my niece, I did a separate canvas with a photo of my niece as well because the little boy and her are siblings. I would be happy to pull it out and photo it for you this weekend, it's much better looking (In my opinion). She is about 3 and dressed like a baby would be back in the 30's or 40's.

To do it, I used a stretched canvas. I found 2-3 decorative papers that related to my subject and tore them into pieces. I placed them randomly on the canvas and I don't believe I covered it completely. I used Gesso to decoupage them into place. Gesso is a versatile paste like product that you can find in the painting section at any art store, it dries clear. One thing that is key is to try to include some papers that have some color to them because you want a little contrast.

I printed a black and white copy of the photo I wanted to use (be sure to use a laser printer so the ink doesn't spread) tore the photo down to just the focal point and added it to the canvas as well.

To age it, I used umber brown acrylic paint with a tiny bit of water mixed in to thin it down. I spread it all over the entire canvas, let it sit for a quick second and then quickly wiped it off.

After its all aged and dried, I used a stencils I found at Michael's to make the diamonds and little swirlies which were painted with teal. For the lettering, I used stamps. You can't see it in the picture but to help age it even more I then used fragile crackle and to preserve it, I put a thin layer of sealer. In person the crackling isn't real obvious and the piece looks like it's very old.

There's a lot of steps to make it but I loved doing it because you get to use so many mediums and can really get creative with it.

I also ordered some decorative tape. Have you used that in your projects? I'll use it on envelopes, presents, etc., also.

Thanks Oak, I did it in 2005 when the aged look of things was just coming out. Then we moved to where we are now and I've haven't done much of any of my artsie stuff since. That table is really cool Oak, very creative indeed. I've never used the tape, but it sounds interesting.

The tape is like masking tape, but it comes in hundreds of patterns and colors. I'm going to see if it will stick to my roller shades instead of using ribbon. Apparently it pulls off pretty easy if you make a mistake.

I've always have wanted to try decoupage but never have. I guess I'll have to start a bucket list after all!

Oakleyok - Love that table! It looks like fabric was used, or maybe decorative paper. I always see ideas like this and I think I can do it. Then I go to do it and my mind draws a blank.

I have more ribbon coming too. Now I decided to paint a coffee can and trim it with ribbon to put on the porch with flowers.

Dee, on my page is a picture of a glass jar full of spools of ribbon. I'm going to keep mine in a jar for decoration, and it will be a nice place to organize it.

I think I'm more excited about learning how to decorate with ribbon instead of decoupage! lol. My ribbon book should come in tomorrow.
