Here is a recipe from RecipeZaar.com that had lots of high ratings:

Homemade Dried Onion Soup

* 4 teaspoons beef bouillon granules
* 8 teaspoons dried onion flakes
* 1 teaspoon onion powder
* 1/4 teaspoon seasoned pepper

Directions

1. cut a 6-inch square of heavy duty foil.
2. Place all ingredients in center of foil.
3. Fold foil to make an airtight package.
4. Label with date and contents.
5. Store in a cool, dry place.
6. Use within 6 months.

I would use some finely chopped onions and beef stock or broth. If you have the granule stuff, mix a tablespoon in and go from there.

Teresa, do you know if any of the makers of the bouillon stuff have started making it without msg in it? I'm hoping they have since it's gotten to such a big thing with campbell's and the canned broth.

I have a recipe from Allrecipes for making your own taco seasoning and it would be great to do the onion soup mix too!

At the risk of being named a food snob....which I freely admit I am, I automatically pass over any recipe calling for a package of onion soup mix.... it's nasty salty stuff!
You can make your own with powdered soup base and dry onions and salt, but you still have nasty salty stuff.
Try what Pappi suggested, sautee some onion and a clove of garlic in a little evoo, add a can of beef broth and cook it down so it's reduced by half....and sub that for some of the water and the dry soup mix.
If you are used to the taste of the dry mix, you will probably have to add salt and MSG to make it taste like you are accustomed to.
But try using real onion and broth....you may be surprised.

LOL Linda, I don't think you're a food snob. Guess why I don't have dry soup mix in my pantry in the first place?! I don't normally use stuff like that. But I will try it once to see how it supposed to taste like then the next time I usually modify the recipe to make my own version of the same dish. The suggestions are gratefully accepted! Thanks! My jar of Better Than Bouillon chicken broth does not have MSG listed on the list of ingredients. Not sure about whether or not the beef broth has it. But this product would not keep as long as it requires refrigeration. But if you were to make up the substitution and use it immediately in a recipe, that should be fine.

The substitute in the recipe would I think be the equivalent of one package of commercial dried onion soup.

We all are probably food snobs about one thing or the other; and that is o.k. You can choose to use a convenience product or not. I don't use it often, but do keep it in the pantry for one particular soup recipe.
